Speaking of the Phoenix, they've spent the week in Sydney and that gave Ricki Herbert the chance to take a close look at the midweek game on the Gold Coast. Herbert, who doubles up as the All Whites coach, was keeping an especially close eye on young gun Mitch Cooper, who has played for Australia at under-17 level, but is also eligible to represent New Zealand. With the All Whites World Cup campaign about to kick-off, don't be surprised if Cooper gets a tap on his shoulder. Which way he turns remains to be seen.

Speaking of possible All Whites in the youth league, is Storm Roux still on the books at the Glory? I know Rufer Junior is at Sydney, I think GCU has another NZ eligible kid in their youth set up. Did the keeper that was trialing with the Heart pick up a youth contract?

Victory's crop of kids are reasonable but not of the calibre of Central Coast's, Melbourne Heart's or Newcastle's.
Victory's first two signings for next season have been left backs - Adama Traore from Gold Coast and the Mariners Sam Gallagher. Gold Coast teenager Mitch Cooper has been offered a deal, too. Tom Rogic and Ben Halloran have been chased hard but they're likely to rejects Victory's overtures.
GCU have folded Abris.

an ideal signing...
However former Gold Coast United midfielder Mitch Cooper did train with the Brisbane squad, with Vidosic considering offering the talented teenager a contract for next season and beyond.
The Roar's chances of snaring the services of Cooper have improved following Graham Arnold's decision to remain with Central Coast Mariners.
Ex-Gold Coast coach Mike Mulvey was considered a leading candidate for the Mariners job had Arnold switched to Sydney, with Cooper likely to follow Mulvey to the Mariners.
I could be the only on here who has this opinion, but wouldn't it be much better if he pledged allegiance to Vanuatu? Oceania football needs to be stronger, and a guy like Mitch Cooper would do a lot for a country like that.

Five players from the Newcastle Jets have been selected to join the Young Socceroos training squad ahead of this year's under-19 Asian Championship.
Coach Paul Okon on Wednesday named his 23-player squad which includes Jets quintet Josh Brillante, Connor Chapman, Mitch Cooper, Adam Taggart and goalkeeper Jack Duncan.
Interesting. Is he more Australian or more New Zealander?
22 Aug 2012 – Newcastle Jets young guns Connor Chapman, Josh Brillante, Mitch Cooper and Adam Taggart have been named in Young Socceroos squad
The Young Socceroos will take on Iran, Vietnam and Uzbekistan over seven days in as part of the preparations for the Asian Football Confederations under-19 Championship which will be held in the United Arab Emirates in November.
Let him play for Aussie, and then in another year or two when he's really maturing as a player lets steal him.
Aussie football seems to be on a slide at the moment (recent results in general have been arse and youth teams aren't qualifying for anything) whereas we are on the rise.
Dangle a u20 World Cup spot infront of him... and he'll come running, but before he plays in it, select him for a NZ friendly so he's tied in for good. If he says no, drop him from the world cup squad.
Don't know how many players would give up a chance to play at that tournament - its the biggest shop window a young player can get himself into.

Its a pretty decent carrot, and i think i would be safe to assume he'd be better than most NZ midfielders that are under 20.
Worked with getting Winston Reid over the line... (bigger carrot admittedly) and I'm sure it helped with Smith's and McGlinchey's decision as well.
He would make any NZ age group side stronger, get him involved. Best way to do that is to show him he has a more promising future with NZ because he's more likely to be involved in large international comps in front of scouts than playing in Asia, but not qualifying for beforementioned tournaments.
Win win for him and NZ football.
Hmm, I meant your comment about playing him in a full international friendly to lock him in for NZ. It's been repeatedly pointed out here that friendlies aren't enough for this, the player has to play in a competitive A international fixture (i.e. World Cup qualifier, OFC Championship, etc).
