I think it meant to express dismay as to how a Serb-sounding name is more Aussie than Kiwi.

yep that pretty much sums it up - our son caught up with him earlier this year in Bris and he was been doing really well with QIS so does not surprise us. Big strappy lad too with plenty of growth in him yet.
