It seems to be more what he doesn't bring. Which is his elbows. At face height.

I think it depends a lot on the opposition. Italy and Paraguay especially were cynical enough to use his physicality against him by falling over and clutching their faces etc. In lower league British football where Fallon comes from that wouldn't matter but at international level that gets called a foul every time. If we want to develop as an international side there isn't really room for a player like him. Wood is clearly the man for the future in the middle of our strike force. He's also big and strong but offers much more in the way of goal scoring than Fallon. Fallon will always be the one whose goal got us to the WC and deserves a place in NZ Football folklore for that, but he shouldn't be kept in the side simply on the basis of that moment

Good to see that again!!! I had sort of forgotten that it was another surging run down the right wing by none other than our own Benny SigmUnd that won the corner!

A goal seemed inevitable and Aberdeen made the breakthrough in the 21st minute. Rory McArdle's cross was headed back across goal by Rory Fallon and Fyvie finished from six yards after Scott Vernon's initial effort was blocked.

And more sinned against than sinning in the fouls department in the cup tie too apparently, a 2-1 win in the Scottish Cup replay against lowly Queen of the South:

0:31

Rory Fallon fouled by Chris Higgins, the ref awards a free kick.

33:20

Free kick awarded for an unfair challenge on Rory Fallon by Daniel Carmichael.

44:50

Chris Higgins gives away a free kick for an unfair challenge on Rory Fallon.

76:40

Ryan McGuffie gives away a free kick for an unfair challenge on Rory Fallon. Strike comes in from Kari Arnason from the free kick.

(And Rory's only recorded as fouling once in the entire 80 mins he was on the field!!!)

Fallon has been involved in the play a lot but not getting the goals. Good to see them hold Celtic to a draw and to keep their unbeaten record this year

second goal was a cracking volley. if anyone can get any footage of it, it is well worth a watch. first goal was a lot easier but still a well taken header. was the best I've seen Fallon play for a while, seemed to be involved in a lot.

Not bad for a donkey!

Wins the header and ghosts into the far post and applies a cool finish with the volley.

Even donkeys have their moments sometimes. One volley doesn't remove donkey status imo

No, but how about his bicycle kick (admit 10 years ago) of his chest 20 yards out that went in... how many kiwi players do you know who could do that...

Fallon, isn't a skillfull player, but thats fine his role doesn't require that. But he does have a good touch and is a decent finisher.

You don't play at the level he has, get brought for a million NZ if you are sh*te or a donkey as you put it.

And remember him verses ausi just before the last world cup. He looked all class against those ausi defenders

If he was in the a league no one would call him a donkey

He's NZ Heskey.
He has some qualities, but think its hard to include "finishing" amongst them with a very mediocre record of 77 goals in 368 games of professional football as a striker ( wiki stats).

But those stats don't reflect his role...

He is there to create opportunities for his striking partners arguebly more than he is there to score them.

Goals are an important makrer but not the only one.

Meanwhile, north of the border, Nelsen's World Cup team-mate Rory Fallon is chasing his own cup glory, for Aberdeen against Hibernian in the Scottish FA Cup semifinals on Monday (NZT).

Fallon has failed to consistently stamp his mark since his arrival at the Scottish Premier League club, though he has scored three times in their cup campaign, including two in the quarterfinal victory at Motherwell.

"The only luck I have enjoyed in my career so far was scoring the goal [against Bahrain] which took New Zealand to the World Cup (in 2010).

"After that my life changed dramatically. I had been a complete unknown in New Zealand, but the goal meant everyone knew who I was.

"But I still haven't won anything in my career and the Scottish Cup would be a brilliant way to break my duck." Fairfax NZ

RORY INTERVIEW  on Scottish football homepage of BBC Sport (with nice photo of him with the Cup):

ABERDEEN STRIKER PREDICTS TIGHT AND TENSE SCOTTISH CUP SEMI-FINAL

Fallon, who was voted player of the round for his double in the 2-1 quarter-final victory at Motherwell, was an unused substitute in Saturday's 3-1 win over Dundee United, while Hibs warmed up with a 1-1 draw at home to the Steelmen on Sunday.

Kari Arnason, Russell Anderson and Fraser Fyvie were also among manager Craig Brown's replacements.

"The boys are really chomping at the bit," added Fallon.

"We've got a lot of people coming back from injuries and the bench on Saturday was really strong.

"The gaffer is going to have some tough decisions to make.

"I want to play and so does everyone else. There's obviously going to be a few lads left upset, but that's football.

"No matter what happens, if I'm playing, on the bench or in the stands, I'll be right behind my team."

The match had opened up completely and Aberdeen followed a spell of pressure with a spectacular equaliser from Fallon in the 59th minute.

The move started with Reynolds, whose long ball looking for Fyvie's run was headed out by Matt Doherty. Fallon chested the ball down 25 yards out before sending a left-footed volley looping over Stack and into the top corner.

Rory Fallon absolved himself of blame after Aberdeens dismal 2-1 William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Hibernian at Hampden.

The Dons striker scored a wonder goal after the break to level Garry OConnors early opener.

But with five minutes remaining boyhood Hibs fan Leigh Griffiths scored the winner to send his team into next months final against either Hearts or Celtic who play on Sunday.

Afterwards Fallon said: We are out of the cup but I know when it came to the pressure situation I know that I did my job.

As a team we let ourselves down. First and foremost you play for yourselves and your family and then you play for the fans and we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and say do we have enough?, and today we didnt.

It is up to each individual to look at themselves in the mirror. I cant speak for the other lads but I know we are better than that and should have got something out of it, at least a draw.
