Always thought this town had a shite name. Never been there but must be as bad as it sounds. Definitely Rory is on his last legs. Think he may be better knocking heads against Indians or Chinamen in their leagues in could be a superstar

It does sound bad in modern English but probably not as bad to its Viking founders: from the Old Norse Escumetorp, which means "Skuma's homestead."

It is probably the least attractive town in a nice part of England. That's due to the dominating steel processing industry and its attendant pollution.

Kevin Keegan started his career there (four seasons), as did Ray Clemence and that's where Liverpool spotted them.

Graham Taylor was from there (his reputation has been tarnished by his failed tenure as England manager but he was a legend during his management of Watford 1977 - 1987 taking them from fourth tier to top flight)

"Taylor grew up in the industrial steel town of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, a town with which he still has many connections and regards as his hometown. The son of a sports journalist with The Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph, Graham found his love of football in the stands of the Old Show Ground watching Scunthorpe United."

Taylor played for nearby Grimsby and Lincoln.

Ian Botham was from around there and also played football for Scunthorpe.

The surrounding countryside is attractive. Lincoln is a nice town, as is York, also nearby.

Amusing fact: Scunthorpe has for years been at the centre of controversy ("cuntroversy"?) over its name containing an obscenity and blocking by internet filters:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_problem

"In 1996 there was controversy when AOL's obscenity filter (among others) refused to accept the name of the town due to its inclusion of the embedded word cunt, which the filter rejected as obscene. Some online forums such as Ultimate Guitar forums (which has recently been resolved) display the name as S****horpe, while Fark.com would display it as Scoonthorpe. This form of censorship over-reach is known in the computing world as the Scunthorpe problem."

"AOL's profanity filter prevented residents of the town of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, England, from creating accounts with AOL, because the town's name contains the substring cunt.[1] Years later, Google's filters apparently made the same mistake, preventing residents from searching for local businesses that included Scunthorpe in their names."

Closer to home, Whakatane attracted international attention after the town's own free wifi network wouldn't allow searches including the town's own name due to a phonetic filter not allowing the F word.

I've seen them referred to as Firewall FC too, pretty sure Ian Botham had an apprentiship there too.

yellowfever.co.nz has/had the same problem too.  I do think Grimsby sounds worse, it is a pretty grim town too, I can see why Capt. James Cook decided to do his sailing in our part of the world.

@SUFCOfficial: United retake the lead after a splendid piece of play. Fallon gets the goal after Madden knocked down for him, with the debutant turning...

@SUFCOfficial: ... and firing low into Rachubka's goal. Another goal for another player making his first start - the Iron retake the lead. 1-2!

Dream debut for Rory then. Great stuff! He's overdue a bit of success.

If he continues to do well, he should get an extended contract past December.

He's had quite a few detractors in the Scunny forums (Argyles, Aberdeen's and here too) so I'm glad for him that he's got off to a bolter after his last two underwhelming gigs.

Dream debut, but they still lost!

Good to see him on the scoresheet though. Hope things work out better for him this time around. His last few gigs have been pretty shit to say the least.

Sounds like it was a decent goal and his new manager certainly rates him which always helps:

http://www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk/news/article/a-...

"The efforts from the United new boys were to prove in vain however as a second half brace from Latics substitute Danny Philliskirk secured victory for Lee Johnson’s team, and Wilcox told The Iron Player: “There’s positives and negatives. You’ve got three players making their full debuts, and they’re not up to speed – that’s the key to it.

“Andrew’s been out on loan to Grimsby and played some football, which is great, but it’s a different level. I thought he acquitted himself really well today.

“Then you’ve got Rory Fallon, who’s done brilliantly for us to last an hour-and-a-quarter. He’s had very little training having been with us a couple of weeks, and again that’s his first start of the season.”

Fallon’s appearance marked his first in competitive football since representing Crawley Town in May, but the New Zealand International warmed to the task admirably before tiring late on.

Despite that, Wilcox was suitably impressed by the contribution of his latest addition having wrapped up a three-month deal for the 32-year-old on Friday, and added: “It’s a tough time, but you’ve got to say Rory’s finish is top-drawer.

“That’s why I brought him in; he gives us a different dimension, and a different option. We spoke about getting through the early period of the game, which we did comfortably by getting balls up to him and letting him get hold of it or flick it on for Paddy [Madden].

“He just ran out of steam, and you always look back. If he could have been defending that last free-kick we could have been coming away from here with a very good away point, but it wasn’t to be.”

GOAL FOR THE IRON! (Fallon, 24)

24' Good initial work from Bishop sees the ball eventually fall to Fallon and his low left footed strike finds the bottom corner!

2 in 2!!!

Today I wrote to the Scunthorpe United clubshop, since when I travel to Norwich in Oct 17-29, I would like to visit to their shop to buy Rory's shirt, and I am asking will they get Rory to the shop to sign the shirt for me, and wait for their reply, but it's hard I know since he was a hit man at the moment, but honestly and hopefully would like to see him, because not his goals I would never know New Zealand football, also Nixie too.

By the way what a great start for his Scunthorpe career, he knows the league well and this time his goals were well taken but not brilliant, I really he can finish the season for them and take them out of relegation, but more importantly was he get the recall from the All Whites, think he deserved it.

I'm not so sure.  If the likes of Smeltz and Killen (both about the same age) are out of AW contention through fitness/retirement and Brocks has another poor season, I'd imagine he'd be a shoe-in for the next 12-18/24 months if he maintains his form.

I always thought it was sad they he qualified for NZ just as career appeared to be reaching its zenith.  He was at his peak 06-08.

Doesn't really fit into Hudsons game plan though I would have thought?

He would focus more on our wingers being wide strikers?

Target man is always important for a team, yes Chris Wood is first choice but he can't start any games at Leicester, Brockie on his days was great but not a target man, Smeltz also, but if Rory keep start for Scunny and scored for them, I can't find any reasons the manager should ignore him, Rory express his desire to play for another World Cup.

But still you need a out and out target to have "Plan B" in last 10-15 minutes, Rory fit the bill.

Yes, without THAT goal, I am sure I won't be here because I won't know New Zealand football and Wellington Phoenix too.

Just receive emails from the Scunthorpe United clubshop, they know I will go to visit the Glanford Park at Oct 24th, the day before the Scunthorpe home game against Notts County. They will try their best to ask Rory to come to the shop after training, hopefully take photo with me and sign on my purchased Scunthorpe shirt, I think I will buy a discourt All Whites shirt in Sports Direct in the week before for him to sign.

I am looking forward to see Rory! Hope he will keep scoring goals for them.
