My guess is he didnt want to play if didnt have to given it an unnecessary risk with little riding on the result. plus, big Sam probably quite happy to have a look at a few players with a view to squad decisions and contracts over the summer. totally guessing though

From the Blackburn Rovers website:

"Linganzi comes into the side in place of Vince Grella who drops to the bench, whilst Hanley, a Scottish under 19 international, replaces Ryan Nelsen who has returned to New Zealand early in preparation for the World Cup".

So Ryan Nelsen is going to be in Christchurch on Monday.  Signing his book from 3.30-4 at Borders, Riccarton.  At 6pm that night he's giving a talk at the Deloitte (spelling?) Lounge, AMI Stadium, tickets are $19.  Just got mine, anyone else going?

im not yet convinced about this book. how many qualifiers did Nelsen play? was it just Bahrain? given i read the exert in the Sunday Star Times about the Welly Bahrain game Im kinda wondering how much is left, and how he has mustered a book out of two games?!?! Not to say still wouldnt be very interesting hearing him talk about the Bahrain games.

I flicked through the book at the bookshop and 5 mins just about took care of it. A lot of it is info about the squad.

The production standards ain't great either.

I'm probably being picky though.

@Marius - yeah i had the same thoughts [and i admit that i only really bought it strait away because i was told i featured in it] but i did find it to be a good read in the end. i particularly liked the part where he talks about each player individually. he s siggyTopLeft072010-05-13 17:19:42

Looks like a coffee table book imho. Nothing wrong with that of course, but was kind of hoping for a good read.

I think it's quite good.  Has a lot of pictures, including one of Simon Elliot in which he looks remarkably like Nicolas Cage - no kidding.

I think he played four games.  Two vs New Caledonia.  Fair enough as well, we can only expect him to travel halfway across the globe for a few games vs some small islands, not all of them.

Love Ryan's quoting of Tim Brown's perspective on the highs and lows of All Whites games Ryan wasn't available for:
" Tim also thought the low point was a two-game trip to Costa Rica and Venezuela in March 2007...An under-strength All Whites squad was outclassed by their speedy, skilful Latino opposition. The boys missed a charter flight out of Venezuela so they had to bunk down in a rat-infested airport. Then they had to split up and fly four different routes back to New Zealand. It took them ages to get home. Some guys retired after that trip but, for the rest, it must have been character building."
Yeah, right!

One of the All Whites' staunchest fans is a Kiwi serving in the British army in Afghanistan. James McKie from Wellington attracted international attention earlier this year after he was cited for bravery for hurling a live grenade away from his position, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers.
But before this act of heroism, he'd written to Ryan to congratulate the AWs for World Cup qualification after the Bahrain win. James has been mightily impressed by the fact Ryan took the trouble to reply to him in Afghanistan, which also boosted the morale of the entire platoon. Ryan's postcard arrived just after two of James' unit had been killed.
James watches all All Whites matches when he can (people record them for him), wears an All Whites shirt when possible, and when he can't on active service, has a NZ flag patch on both his machinegun and his rifle to show his support...
He's currently back at HQ in Edinburgh and looking  forward to watching games when he can.

Great to see four of the Guardian newpaper's ten "Best Performances" from the World Cup group stage involve All Whites: two each for Ryan and Pastie. Five of the worst ten performances involve Englishmen, four French and one Aussie (Kewell)-  LOVE IT!!!!!! Love the accompanying photos too:

IAIN McGREGOR/Stuff.co.nz
A TOP PICK: All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen has had two of his World Cup performances rated in the top 10 by readers of a UK website.
IAIN McGREGOR/Stuff.co.nz
TOP RATED: All Whites goalie Mark Paston has had two of his World Cup performances rated in the top 10 by readers of a UK website.
All Whites Ryan Nelsen and Mark Paston are in the top 10 list of "best performances" according to a football World Cup survey being run by a UK-based website.

Guardian.co.uk has been polling readers since the World Cup began last month and as of this morning the performance of Nelsen - the All Whites' skipper - against Italy has been rated the third-best.

Nelsen, who also captains Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League, also fills fifth place on the list for his efforts against Paraguay while Paston, the All Whites goalie, fills the seventh and 10th positions for performances against Paraguay and Italy respectively.

The best performance, as rated by the website, are by Japan's Keisuke Honda against Denmark while Diego Forlan's efforts for Uruguay against South Africa are second.

There is little surprise in the list of the 10 worst player performances with England players holding down five spots with Wayne Rooney at one and fourth, Emile Heskey third, John Terry sixth and Frank Lampard 10th.

Australia's Harry Kewell gets second spot on the worst list for his effort against Ghana while the remainder of the list are Frenchmen Sidney Govou (twice), Andre-Pierre Gignac and Nicolas Anelka.

Do you think Ryan Nelsen or Wynton Rufer deserve to be called the best NZ player of all time?

I don't think Ryan has achieved as much as Wynton has.

Did Rufer not win the European Golden boot or such likes  when playing for Werder Bremen when they won the  old European Cup Winners Cup?  which incidently  he scored in the final of ? but was  then virtually completely   ignored by a Rugby obsessed media back home!!Kiwi Jambo2010-07-12 17:30:27

Good news, though he is still listed as doubtful. So may in fact start off the bench.

Allardyce urging Nelsen to quit international football.

Ridiculous. We are lucky if he comes back once a year, he will likely be 'injured' for most of the Oceania qualifiers, and he could have strained a quad muscle just as easily on the training field as he did at Albany.

edit: At least it shows Big Sam still cares about Nelsen.aitkenmike2010-10-23 13:35:31

it's basically up to Ryan really. Allardyce is a knob you don't see Moyes saying cahill should quit international football in the papers.

I thought he wasn't continuing with Blackburn after this season.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Allardyce should go be fat somewhere else.  But agreed, at least it shows he still cares about Nelsen and needs him to be at his best.  None of this Samba nonsense.

Peraps that's because Cahill is nearly 10 years younger?
