"All Whites captain and Blackburn Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen has told Newstalk ZB he wishes he was back in his home town of Christchurch.
[...]
Nelsen will wear a black armband in Blackburn's Premier League match against Aston Villa this weekend."'

What a cool bastard.

Meanwhile All Whites coach Ricki Herbert says he's still waiting on word from English premier league club Blackburn Rovers about Ryan Nelsen's availability although he says he'll enforcing FIFA regulations that say Nelsen must be released for national duty.

And played brilliantly- him and Samba are a formidable pair in the centre of defense.

Knee, "clearing debris", painful.  Had something similar a few years ago, felt like daggers everytime I bent down.

Will be interesting to see if he gets the Blackburn captaincy back if Samba goes to Arsenal. Surely he will.

Anyone else see him on Premier League World last night? His recovery is ahead of schedule and he's amping to get back into pre-season apparently.

Doubt he'll be sold. Samba gets injured a lot and there isn't really anyone else apart from Givet if Samba, Nelsen, Dann are injured or suspended.

Ryan still not fit enough to even make the bench in yesterday's game.
New signings like Yakubu did well in an exciting 4-3 home win over Arsenal.
Back four of Salgado, Samba, Givet, Dann.

Ryan's always going to be quite injury-prone now, especilly as he ages. A big factor is that he was born with one leg shorter than the other which often leads to back and hamstring problems.
My dad was also born with one leg shorter than the other and had many serious back problems eventually resulting in spinal surgery.
Things were difficult for Ryan as long ago as 2006 when "a rare hamstring complaint" failed to respond to any treatment available in England and Ryan was fortunate highly specialised surgery in Finland worked.

From that injury-plagued 2006-2007 season to date, it tends to be forgotten Ryan has missed 69 of Blackburn's 195 league games (more than a third).

Could be if his injury problems persist, he will have to do what many other players in his position have done and retire from international football in order to maintain some sort of club career.

Blackburn will reportedly join the race to sign Manchester City's Nedum Onuoha in the January transfer window.

Rovers chief Steve Kean is reportedly looking to further bolster his defence in the New Year as the likes of Ryan Nelsen and summer signing, Scott Dann, have been struggling with injury problems in the opening three months of the campaign. And, it seems the Scot has set his sights on Onuoha as a potential target from City.

Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean admits the team has missed captain Ryan Nelsen so far this season.

The New Zealand skipper has appeared just once in defence for Rovers this term because of a knee injury and Kean feels his absence has attributed to the poor form of the Lancashire outfit who sit second bottom after 11 matches.

"We want to assemble a squad that can get in the top 10, and I don't think that we are far away from that at all," he said.

"It's difficult when you miss a lot of your senior players because we are so young, so we have missed Ryan Nelsen and his leadership qualities on the pitch."
