Anyone know how he is going here?

Looking at the website it doesn't look like he has played too many games but he has played the 10th most amount of minutes. Marius Lacatus2010-03-16 08:52:48

been out of starting line up last couple of games. he worked his way back into line up after missing a few games when at Confeds, but they were losing almost every week and coach kept changing starting line up until they won one. Simon wasnt playing when they did, so he's going to have to bide his time. they wont make the playoffs.

Yeah I see they are last. How well is he playing? Like would he still be NZs top midfielder?wellyphoenixfan2009-08-08 18:19:46

dunno, havent seen any MLS games. but its only a couple of months since he was by far our best midfielder at the confed cup, so i cant imagine much has changed. i think he's fit. he will be in herbert's line up for sure. re san jose, I think he's probably somewhat the victim of an underperforming team and coach needing to be seen to make changes. that happens in footy.

ELLIOTT OUT OF FAVOUR BUT OUGHTON EARNING PRAISE
Elliott seems to have been apportioned some of the blame by his coach Frank Yallop (ex-Ipswich Town) when he last played for San Jose in a 0-2 loss to Chicago on 19 July- he gave the ball away rather softly near the goal-line from which Chicago scored a scond goal in injury time. He hasn't taken the field for San Jose since....

However, Duncan Oughton seems to have curried a lot of favour with his coach recently, after an impressive display out-of-position on the right wing. See full report:

COLUMBUS -- It is possible to teach an old Columbus Crew new tricks.

For a veteran team that has been set in its ways successfully for the past 1-1/2 seasons, the need for change Saturday vs. Real Salt Lake was born out of desperation.

Injuries had robbed the Crew of their top two goal producers in Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Alejandro Moreno. A suspension sidelined assist leader Emmanuel Ekpo and defender Chad Marshall and Robbie Rogers were away with the U.S. national team, leaving the team lacking 17 of its 22 goals this season.

And one other thing: The Crew had scored three times in the previous four games.

Enter a wing man that would have made Tom Cruise proud in the movie "Top Gun" and the "Crash and Dash" attack that lifted Columbus to a 3-1 win for a record-tying 18th consecutive regular-season home game without a defeat.

That 32-year-old midfielder Duncan Oughton got the start for Ekpo -- his first since June 14, 2008 -- was not a huge surprise because coach Robert Warzycha only had 16 players available. Seeing the longest tenured Crew member running the right flank was.

Oughton has been used in the middle almost exclusively since joining the club in 2001 and said his last play on the wing was about six years ago.

The veteran looked at home. He controlled the tempo differently than either Rogers or Ekpo would have and defended well. He led the build up on the first goal and assisted on a classic third goal.

"There was a lot of one-touch passes on (Oughton's) side," Warzycha said. "That's how we broke the pressure. Duncan did very well."

Ekpo and Rogers provide speed down the flanks and a go-for-goal attitude that sometimes leads the team adrift defensively. Oughton and his counterpart on the left side, Eddie Gaven, kept the match at a manageable tempo.

"The old guy out there," forward Jason Garey said of Oughton. "He's just so smart and knows the game and was able to control the game a lot of times, slow it down when we needed to slow it down and speed it up when we needed to speed it up."

It was Oughton's through ball to overlapping defender Frankie Hejduk that led to the first goal. Hejduk sent a service into the box that was poorly cleared and forward Steven Lenhart took advantage for his first goal of the season.

"Playing with Frankie is amazing," Oughton said. "He's up and down. He covers you when you need covered. He talks to you and puts you in good spots. He's such a great player. He's an engine, that guy. He's ridiculous."

Said Warzycha: "There was a lot of understanding between him and Frankie and also between him and (central midfielders) Brian Carroll and (Danny) O'Rourke."

-- and the final was a quality effort. Garey had a give-and-go with Oughton before Lenhart received the ball while surrounded by three defenders. His one-touch went to an open Garey near the top of the box.

"The third goal was a thing of beauty," Oughton said. "It was a good combination and Jay finished it amazingly well."arzycha will have some decisions to make before the Crew hosts Toronto FC on Saturday. Ekpo will be available and Moreno (groin) could be although Schelotto (hamstring) is expected to sit again.

Will Oughton return to the bench and what about the Garey-Lenhart combo? The coach has a few days to decide.

"The tactic we chose for this game (RSL) paid off when we decided to go with two forwards," said Warzycha. "When we play against some different team maybe we go with a different formation

Elliott played full 90 as San Jose broke an attrocious record away from home - 20 games without a win. they beat DC United 2-1.
Boyens also played 90 for NY and they drew 1-1 - cant remember who with.
Columbus are going great guns, top of eastern division and most points of any MLS club - but Oughton didnt get any time on the park in LA, where they won 2 zip.

A win while he is playing the 90 is good for Elliot.

Elliott and Boyens played each other yesterday. It ended 1 nil to San Jose. Both played 90 minutes, neither got injured.

San Jose in middle of a pre-season tour in London. Have been playing friendlies against Spurs and West Ham ressies (which they won whatever that means). Elliott seems to be completely over his leg injury.

minor injury from bad tackle in preseason game over weekend ...

"In the 48th minute, the Earthquakes earned a free kick 25 yards from goal after Elliott was taken down hard by Richard Mulrooney. Cornell Glen took the free kick, but bent it just over the goal. Elliot had his leg wrapped up after the hard foul, but had to exit the game 10 minutes later for midfielder Antonio Ribeiro.

I wanted to keep playing to see if it would loosen up a bit, but it didnt, explained Elliott of his injury. He got his studs right in my thigh, so thats going to leave a mark. After the game he described the injury as a contusion, and he expects to be back in training ahead of this weekend."

doesnt suprise me on consideration. he's v unlikely to be around next season and is only going to be around for the first few weeks of this MLS season before he heads off to prepare for World Cup. so, certainly a candidate for the 'waive'.
it sounds like several clubs were waiting for the deal with the players union to get signed (last week) before making these calls.
at least he's completed a near complete pre-season, so must be reasonably well conditioned.
interesting to see what he does between now and June. he's not in too disimilar position to the A-League boys in that respect. if not a very short term loan then I can see him arranging to train with somebody, like some of the Aussies seem to be doing. he's got lots of contacts.

Think it'll more likely be the latter due to the complexity of the rules in the MLS. Correct me if I'm wrong but being waived doesn't see him become a free agent. He will have to wait and see if any of the other MLS clubs take him on trial or try to pick up his option.

It has nothing to do with the timing of the seasons.

It has to do with the club bringing back an injury recovered american player of potential, drafting a former college star and four latin American midfielders, two in the second half of the season and two more in the off-season. There are too much midfielders being brought in.

It was already speculated that Elliot was used a surplus squad player in the midfield at the beginning of last season with the amount of midfielders that was there. For him to manage 12 games in the last season was lucky.

But with 6 coming in, 2 had to go. So he wouldn't get much games in the coming season. He will have a better chance in other clubs with less midfielders about. The ones they brought in are top quality especially Ramon Sanchez who plays for the El Salvador national team.

Being waiver means he is available to be picked up by other MLS clubs, in the meanwhile he should be allow to train with the team or even playing until he is picked up. He is surplus or expendable to the needs of the club.

yes i get that but hard to make a case for a contract when you are expected to retire next season and will be away half of this one.

He has begun to look increasingly less mobile in his most recent games for the all whites... perhaps his injury history plus age catching up on him??

Hopefully he gets something, but a 34 year old midfielder can't be to popular. Perhaps one of our NZFC teams could take him on as a player / coach. (Similar to Vicelich)

Well it would be that he may not be match fit as he would like by it was time for the bahrain match. But if you remember, his playing ability stand out during the Confederation Cup compared to his teammates last year. He really hasn't much to prove other than keeping his fitness up for the World Cup build up and games.

I personally can't see him not being in the starting lineup some of the matches. He is definitely in the squad and if anything in the starting lineup.

He did mention that he wouldn't mind being part of the Wellington Phoenix year or so back because it would be nice for his family to see him play in Wellington before he finish his career. Next season may see him in Wellington. He would do a great job along with Lia or Manny. Especially when he has a higher passing game that neither Lia or Manny has. He will be a rock in the midfield, I think.

Remember Elliot has been playing at a high level for longer than most of Nix players. So it shouldn't be that difficult for him at the Nix, in fact he would be more settled at home in Wellington.

Imagine an all Kiwi midfield three of Elliott, Brown and James for the Nix, fantastic.

Wonder if there were any scouts at these Ressie games from lower league clubs looking for loanee options before the window closes - Elliott as a free agent wouldn't be a bad pick up til the end of the season.

I think Elliott replacement should be jeremy christie who can both play as a defensive midfielder or right back. He seems to be ready for the start of the season with Tampa Bay Rowdies next Friday:

 1. Ricki simply isn't looking to replace Simon Elliott
2. Simon is fairly fit currently as far as we know, having recently played several pre-season games for San Jose
3. Christie is a completely different sort of player- more a hard-tackling defensive player without much of a passing game. Elliott, on top of providing some defensive cover, offers much more creatively in midfield and is an accurate passer of the ball, able to feed our strikers
4. Elliott has had a long career at a much higher level than Christie, playing in Major League Soccer (in my opinion a considerably better league than the A-League) including championship-winning sides, as well as for Fulham in the Premier league.
Whereas Christie was considered by Ricki as surplus to requirements (euphemism for "not good enough") at the Phoenix.
5. Christie remains a fringe All Whites player who would only come into the picture if several other players caught the plague or died in a plane crash...

I agree with Big Pete largely, but the gap is closing, not because Christie is getting better all of a sudden, rather, with age, Elliott is dropping off.

Would he be able to make himself available for the Nix in time for the coming season?

Junior doctors can have transfer between hospitals and it includes international transfers. Not to dissimilar to football transfers, I understand, so not a huge hurdle to overcome if they wanted to.

I manage GP/Junior Doctors here in England and yes AllWhiteBelievr is correct.  All she would need to do is find a hospital or practice willing to have her (she might not even need that if she's married to Simon) and down she comes.  I don't think that anything would stop her moving to Wellington tbh.

just so i know where to find it next time a journo says they were surprised by Elliott's performance or havent seen him play well for the AWs for a long time, this was Terry Maddaford after the last game of the Confed CUp last year ...

"Simon Elliott, again the oldest player on the park, was outstanding - along with Glen Moss and Ivan Vicelich, the most consistent of the All White players here."

Fred Woodcock after the same game ... "Simon Elliott was again dominant in the middle."
