Roux has been back since, and we know that Smith asked for another chance. We have no idea whether Boyd has asked for that same chance or whether he even wants to play for NZ. A DUI is a perfectly legitimate excuse to exempt a player from selection considerations as well.

Hudson has made a lot of questionable decisions, but the this is not one of them.

Agree with comments on Roux, Smith and Boyd. However with a drink driving charge, I think you drop a player once, he 'serves his time', then he is available for selection and if good enough picked again. It's not that serious a crime in my book, and we all make mistakes. Gleeson ended up fronting an alcohol awareness program at Timbers. To me that shows plenty enough of remorse. If ever rugby league player caught for DUI was never picked again...............

Marinovic has mostly looked good (though decidedly shaky first half of the Russian game), but we should have our best players picked for AWs. Feel Gleeson would pressure him for starting spot, but don't see Moss or Williams doing that. Surely competition for spots is a good thing

I agree there, were I selecting the team Gleeson would definitely be in/around the squad. Hudson has had past issues with alcohol has he not? (or am I completely misremembering?) I wonder if that affects his outlook on the situation and whether it makes him more or less forgiving...

Either way we're a little off topic now!

Why would he sign on to be number 2?

$

Only people that make decent money in the USA are the big name marquees they sign.

Depends on what you mean by decent. I'm guessing a reserve keeper in MLS makes more cash than a first choice keeper in the 3 Bundesliga

MLS contracts are also with MLS rather than the clubs, making them more secure than a lower league European one. They're also either semi or fully-guaranteed (first-year players on semi-guaranteed contracts can be released before a certain date, after your first year a contract becomes fully-guaranteed). The least Stefan could be paid is USD$65,000, (well, $32,500 because it's a half-season) rising to $67,500 next year. It isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, but I wouldn't be surprised if it compares favourably to 3.Liga salary. For comparison, Gleeson is on USD$110,000.

With regards to his future playing time, the contract is until the end of next year and with team options on 2019 and 2020, which makes it look like Vancouver see him as a potential long-term option and a replacement for Ousted.

Another key thing to note is that he has been signed by the MLS team rather than the affiliate, so he's only going to play USL if the 'Caps sign another reserve keeper, he drops to no. 3 and gets loaned to Whitecaps II.

Rumours running around, Whitecaps are looking at more All Whites.

Calling it now - My Prediction - Lewis, Dyer, Doyle and Tony Lochhead all sign for the Whitecaps.

Vancouver beautiful city, though winter can be a bit grey and depressing. Also one of those few places on earth where apparently, Kiwi accent sounds exotic.

Sounds Zesty, hopefully attraction to some New Zealand Footballers who aren't pro for title of sounding exotic and foxy in a place in the world.

Guessing Gordon Forrest (assistant coach) is the connection with the recent signings.  Former NFF and Ferns assistant.

Is an interesting move. Going on Vanvouver's last match report, Ousted is still playing very well. Seems like won't be easy for Marinovic to grab no 1 spot. Meanwhile down the road at Portland, Gleeson is firmly established as their no 1 keeper.

Must put pressure on Hudson to include Gleeson in his next AWs squad. Ahead of Tamati Williams as a minimum.

So what does Hudson do?

He omits Williams but includes Oliver Sail in the squad, who's never played an A-League match....

Gleason maybe has said no to an all Whites call-up?

Lewis and Tuiloma have been dropped from the AW's squad - Tuiloma no doubt being given time to settle at Portland,

Maybe Clayton Lewis is trialing in MLS too?

I can confirm that Gleeson has not made himself unavailable. Who knows what reasons Hudson is using.

What does Hudson do Big Pete?  He just continues to not even mention Gleeson from what I can see. Like many I suspect some sort of falling out/dust up between AH/AWs coaching staff & Gleeson on last year's USA two game tour.

I mostly back Hudson, but to continually not even mention Gleeson's omission (and to a lesser extent Boyd's) to me is gutless. Even just a single sentence along the line that "there was off field issues with Jake Gleeson, that hopefully will be sorted out in the future" would sort of do. Just tell the truth (sort of)!

God help Hudson if he ever gets a gig in the English leagues, and has to front their press hounds.

He was asked in an interview today - said that Gleeson and Boyd weren't committed. Mentioned Gleeson had a minor niggle on that US tour and he opted to go back to his club rather than stay with the team for the US game - feeling was he wasn't interested in being part of it if he wasn't starting

From Andrew Voerman's article on Stuff - link here - https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/nz-teams/95...

Gleeson is a regular starter in goal for the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer in the US, but after appearing in two games under Hudson in late 2014, he hasn't been sighted on the field since.

He was called up for last October's friendlies in the US, but left camp early with an injury, and with Glen Moss returning to the fold since then, he has fallen down the pecking order.

Hudson said that while Gleeson hadn't turned down another callup for any of the four squads selected since then, his past decisions had counted against him.

"We needed him before that, and he wanted to stay with his club. He's a really good keeper, there's no denying that, but it's the same scenario with Tyler - we need everyone showing they want to come and represent their country, and when they do, they'll be available, I'll consider them.

"But I haven't heard anything from Tyler or from Jake."

Okay sorry missed all that. So finally we have some answers!!

Sounds like they both need to do a bit grovelling to get back in, which we can only presume T Smith did last year post ONC Nations Cup. Ball in their court

In a Nix thread some one mentioned that Lewis turned down a League 1 gig.  A stupid move in my books as that's a higher standard overall then the A league and most leagues in Europe while also putting him in the shop window for bigger and better down the road.

Wrong thread I know but if Milligan couldn't get a visa to play in the UK cuz Aussie wasn't ranked high enough, Lewis isn't gonna get one unless he has some way of getting a UK passport (Pretty sure someone said he only has his NZ one)
