Well done to Steven... I have to admit to being a little sad when he was let go, but great to see he's landed on his feet, and in a big way!! Here's hoping he can help them stay up in the top division now. Does this mean he's now one of our 'big high profile players' who we're going to have to battle to get released for friendlies now?
He's hardly in the frame for the top line AWs line-up, so don't see it as an issue really.
finally some recog for my boy. He was with another SPL side and just about made it aswell, also at Genk. He is on pounds, don't see any other nzer making it to the top flight in europe. He will be an asset to nz football when he get the experience.
All those wishing him good can stick it after you tared and feathered him publically in the nix. He doesn't need you fair weather boys.
Kris Bright plays in the Greek top flight as well.
SOF.. Ryan and Chris mean anything?

Like to point out that when Old played like garbage we made it clear what we thought of his performance. When he played well we acknowledged it as well. Add to that, when Durante etc play bad we come out and say it so we didn't just pick on Old.
And you don't see any other NZer's in top flight Europe? Nelsen, Killen, Bright, should have Reid and McGlinchey.
Edit: And Vicelic until somewhat recently.

I love a good rash generalisation.

Just on that point: Have Reid and McGlinchey definately turned their backs on NZ?
Steven Old (Basingstoke Town)
The Herald on Sunday reckons Steven Old is off to Kilmarnock, pending a visa, which their chairman says they are trying to organise.
A permanent place would be great.

Scottish top flight aren't they?
The same Steven Old? Well done him if that's true. Currently 9th in SPL... locked in the relegation dogfight.
They must be desperate.
Maybe but don't knock it. Look at Bright, he was rubbish at the Knights but now is playing pro in Greece and scored for NZ last night. This can only be a good thing for NZ Football.
Great news for NZ football and for Old if it all goes to plan. Brilliant
Story on the home page tells me that they are pretty keen for him, and he's been training there for a while. Well done Steven, just hope they don't see any of the silly own goals and penalties you gave away here, and more of the goals like against the Planes.
Makes me feel Charlie Miller is right when he says that A-League is just as good as the Scottish Premier League..
Lower parts of it PERHAPS. Of course the Old Firm are miles away and so are a few below them.
Bit of a surprise that an a-league cast off can walk into a SPL side...
Old has worked hard to get where he is. You can't knock that. Congratulations to him.

NZ football can only benefit from this aswell. You hate to see some of our top players disappear off the radar so i'm glad he's back at top level. And scottish prem league, how much better for a nz'er can it get. Just look where Killen struck gold.
good on him. Despite his problems at the Phoenix i thought he had a good Olympics campaign so that may have helped open the door.

they should just pay a bit of coin and buy Siggy off us.
NO THEY SHOULD NOT

He's apparently signed a three year deal, according to Scottish newspapers.
Far out, I'll be honest, Old is pretty average, the Scottish league must be far poorer than I gave it credit for (credit not really the best word to use). Basically we were massively impressed when Killen did well at Hibernian, with Old walking straight into Kilmarnock I wonder how many of our other players could do similarly well.
Will he be first team do you think? And when's the soonest he'll be able to play?

raising the profile
This is what Old said in the Scottish Sun today
Kilmarnock vs Phoenix in a pre-season profile match.

McGlinchey, yes
Reid still has until July to either a) declare alleigance or b) get his first cap

Congrats to Steven...
He has a great professional attitude, and after the stick he got at the Nix, he could have easily hung up his boots after being released...
But he's stuck at it - and shown all the young kiwi's that even though one coach/club might not think you're good enough - there are plenty of clubs where you might be exactly what they need.
Good on him... great to see another young kiwi doing well!
well done to the lad for pcking himself up, i've no problems if he does really well over there, and there's always the banstick if his "number1 fan" gets to be a bit repetitive
Now it's on the BBC I can fully believe that this is for real

Is he really that good? or maybe just what Killmarnock needed.
Congratulations anyway.
Maybe more like Kilmarnock is that bad?
You could take Old, Sigmund, boyens and slot them in centre back for any team...with a bit of luck as well as plenty of practise and they could hold their own.
Old has tended to make the odd mistake it a few of the games I have seen, if he cut those out whilst trialling he would actually be/look like a quality player. when u get the opportunity...you got to take it. its all about exposure. if sigmund was trialling maybe he would have got it. or maybe they would have said he was not tall enough. Old looks like a class centre back. and he kind of looks Scottish...lol
sorry if I am talking a bit of sh1t ...but I am bl00dy pleased for Old and for NZ football. I would put him in the Nz world cup squad if only to give our team more look of quality have players. i,e having players from Celtic, Kilmarnock etc

When we look ahead to the 2014 World Cup it will be only Old in the back line with massive exposure and experience in the game. (at this stage)
Here's hoping Pelter, Boxall and Aaron Scott make it up to Pro level to help Old out.
Siggy and Nelson will probably be long gone.
Didn't realise Andy Boyens was only 25. Well lets hope he goes the way of Nelson. Wasn't Nelson around 26/27 when he tranferred from the states to Blackburn.
That might be a very good centre back partnership down the line. 'Potentially' being a key word.
