At League Two Level he would be now sitting behind Boxall, Tuiloma and possibly level with Payne, Stensness, especially given recent playing history?
And Pjnaker would be pushing him for a senior place too?
Has he said anything about the AWs in recent times?
Any indication of how Hay rates him?
I was going to make a reference to Steven Old who had a good run in League One. Would have actually been keen to see him in white again given his Olympic and Phoenix history,  but he’s 4 years older than Smith and has dropped out of the top 4 leagues it seems.

Old is now in a Scottish pub league, and spent about 3 seasons at League Two (not L One) battlers Morecambe.

For that planned AWs v England game last last year, Smith was excited (rightly so) about chance of playing England at Wembley. Unfortunately for him the game was canned.

I only see Smith now in a AWs squad if a similar older heads like Reid or Mikey Boxall are both unavailable. I just see that Intercontinental playoff opponent next year, as likely having quality quick forwards. Smith I fear would just be too slow, and off the pace. Also not sure he has the skillset to play out from the back like a Pijnaker or Stensness.

Think his time has passed, but he might be handy around the squad like Hudson did with Falloon & Smeltz in 2017. Those 2 big playoff games next year will be high pressure, and he's been there done that. But again really only if both Reid & Boxall are unavailable.

Reid, Boxall and Tuiloma would be our top level CB’s. Behind them I’d say it’d be Nikko Boxall, Pijnaker, Payne and maybe Gianni. Then I’d have Smith, and behind him the players like Stanger, Adams, Brotherton, Mitchell, TAHW, Ashworth, Musa (a more natural DM) etc.

We need to see more youthful options developing, that was one of the positives of Reid and Boxall being injured. The youngsters had a chance to experience a big game.

Ahh- Morecambe were promoted this season! That does make a bit more sense.

Not in match day squad as CU lose 0-1 to Gillingham in EFL Trophy. Colchester had their League Two game against Sutton United postponed on the weekend, with some Covid cases at Sutton.

Full game in a 0-2 loss to Salford City (15th). Colchester 18th.

Be interesting to see what level Smith's now at with the AWs, after a couple of years down in League Two in a pretty average Colchester team.

Colchester (18th) sans captain Smith lose 2-0 at Tranmere Rovers (4th).
Looks unlikely will be any promotion to League One for Tommy & CU this season.

Rare time on the bench. Subbed on at 90 mins in a 1-0 win over Harrogate Town (2nd). CU (19th) had just scored prior at 88 mins. A very valuable win for them.

Unused sub as CU (19th) draw 1-1 with Bristol Rovers (17th).
Bit of afters late on with 3 players (1 CU & 2 BR) sent off post 87 mins.

CU guy a defender so chance Smith starts next game, but interesting benched last 2 matches since returning from Bahrain. Is club captain after all. Nursing a niggle?

Back into the starting lineup, but it doesn't go well in a 3-0 loss at Port Vale (2nd).
Full game Smith, CU 19th in League Two.

Colchester going from bad to worse. A 1-3 loss to Sutton United (6th). CU down to 10 men from 27 mins (score 1-1). Full game Smith.

Early days (season just over 25% completed), but at this rate relegation for CU, is a real threat.

Dean Bouzanis (ex Melb City) in goal for Sutton, who had Tzanev as their GK a few seasons back.

I checked the League Two tabled yesterday on a whim and couldn't help but notice Forest Green Rovers are top. Love that club! They're doing so well on and off the pitch!

The Gambians actually have a midfielder at Forest Green. Maybe he sources the club some nice fresh produce from West Africa.

Sadly for Smith, AWs duty means he misses a return to Portman Road.
Ipswich Town with a win on pens (0-0 NT) over Colchester in the EFL Trophy.

Frankie Sears & Luke Chambers return to their old club in Smith's absence. Nearby CU basically a retirement home for ex Town players it seems.

See that Forest Green & CU have got their League Two fixture scheduled for next week postponed.

Subbed on at 79 mins for a 1-0 loss at Stevenage (21st). Same score when he came on. Colchester 19th.

Interesting case of a club captain not being a starter of late.

Tomorrow's Sutton United game postponed.

4th game in a row postponed. League Two plays through FIFA windows. Wonder if means Smith will be unavailable for January's AWs games, as part of some deal with Colchester that he is released by them, for the early OFC tourney pool games that fall outside March's FIFA window.

Should be plenty of CB cover in January. Boxall & Tuiloma out of MLS season. Pjinaker seemingly not playing club football anywhere. Reid who knows.

Nikko Boxall & Francis de Vries (can play CB) out of season with their Scandi clubs. Could bring in James Musa for a look see. Hay might even persuade Talay to release Tim Payne.

If they drop out of the Football League surely he'll be able to get another gig in League One or Two you'd expect, if he still wants to play at that level that is
