If they drop out of the Football League surely he'll be able to get another gig in League One or Two you'd expect, if he still wants to play at that level that is

Sorry CU (20th) are actually 3 spots, and 3 points above the drop zone. Teams 23rd & 24th being relegated. But yes going down still a chance.

Ex Ipswich Town team mate Freddie Sears doing his bit to help CU stay up with 8 goals in 20 games. Enough for 10th top scorer in the league.

Starting and captain as Colchester (22nd - 3rd last) travel to play the herbivores of Forest Green Rovers (top of League Two).

Full game in a 2-0 to Forest Green.
CU stay 22nd

Plenty of Kiwis in Euroland, at clubs fighting hard to avoid relegation. Which ain’t going to make it so easy for Hay come mid March.

Unused sub as Colchester (22nd) lose 0-2 to Barrow (19th). 2nd goal conceded at 91 mins.

Presumably a rest for Smith over the long season slog.

Back in starting lineup as CU (22nd) travel to Sutton United (5th).
Dean Bouzanis (ex Melb City/WSW) in goal for Sutton.

Smith subbed off in 91st min (score 2-2), and it costs Colchester who concede a 3rd, a minute later, in a 3-2 loss.

Sutton up to 3rd.

CU remain 22nd, 3 points above Scun-thorpe (23rd) in relegation zone.

Changing managers has an immediate effect. Colchester (22nd) with a 3-0 win away at Salford City (10th).

Smith an unused sub.

Colchester (22nd) with a 1-1 draw against Swindon Town (7th).

Bit of drama in this one. When CU were 0-1 down, they had their keeper (72 mins) and CB Chambers (87 mins) both sent off. Both straight reds. Then when down to 9 men they managed a late equaliser (92 mins).

Chambers of course is an old Ipswich Town team mate of Smith's. So they will be 2 CBs short (Smith in the UAE) for their next game in a few days.

Only 2 teams from League Two get relegated. CU are only 1 spot, but 6 pts above Scun-thorpe in the drop zone. CU also have 2 games in hand

Full game in a 2-1 loss at Mansfield (5th). Bit of a manic finish with both teams scoring a goal post 90 mins.

Colchester stay 20th.

Starting as Colchester (21st), trail Oldham Athletic (22nd), 0-1 at HT.
Another 6 pointer relegation tussle.

Edit - full game Smith in a 1-1 draw. CU 21st and 2 points above Oldham (23rd) in the drop zone, but Athletic have 2 games in hand.

Next for CU another 6 pointer hosting Leyton Orient (18th).

Be interesting to see what dates CU release Smith for OFC tourney. Some talk that he maybe released for non FIFA window dates (first 2 pool games) and then return to CU, when AWs reinforcements arrive from 3rd pool game onwards.

As expected not in match day squad, as CU (19th) travel to Bristol Rovers (8th).

Presumably already in Qatar, where Colchester have released him for the whole tourney.

Edit - a 1-0 win to Rovers (up to 6th). Colchester remain 19th, and 8 points above the drop zone.

Colchester (19th) sans Smith beat Tranmere Rovers (7th) 1-0. 95th min winner.

CU now a very comfortable 11 points clear of the drop zone, with 7 matches left for them.

On the bench as Colchester (19th) host Stevenage (23rd - 2nd spot in drop zone)

CU 11 pts clear of Stevenage, with 6 games left, so looking well & truly safe now.

Edit - Smith an unused sub as Colchester lose 0-2. They have 5 games left and are 8 spots above the drop zone (Stevenage)

Full game in a 2-0 loss at Exeter City (2nd). 4 matches left & Colchester (22nd) are 8 points clear of the drop. They look pretty safe.

Only 2 teams go down in League Two. Making it hard for likes of Crocombe's Grimsby to be promoted from the National League.

Met a guy from Colchester 2 days ago here in Lima. Sadly he knew nothing about futbol

Full game Tommy as Colchester finish the season with a 2-0 win at Hartlepool (17th).

Colchester end up 15th.

Smith 32 games (of 46 matches) for the season with 29 starts. Only 1 goal. He usually gets few more than that. Couple weeks break, then assembling with AWs from 23rd May.

From Flying Kiwis.

League Two is the place to be for kiwis in England, apparently. Nik Tzanev has been relegated down into the division with AFC Wimbledon, Max Crocombe has been promoted up into the division with Grimsby Town, and Tommy Smith was already there with Colchester United.

However don’t expect to see Smithy in the short term as he’s currently out with a foot injury. Was seen at a club academy camp with a moon boot on last week so yeah could be a couple weeks before he’s available. Colchester lost 3-2 away to Northampton Town in their season opener. Wild game in which they twice equalised but then lost to an 89th minute strike.
