Genuine question - what benefit is there to a young player already in a decent european league to turning out to play for the all whites?

I mean- is it genuinely career enhancing, or potentially limiting to be part of the NZ system, given some of the football played?

It's not a question of benefit, it's a matter of honour and I guess we don't know where Boyds allegiances lie.

I'm a fan of his and hope to see him play for us soon.

I doubt many players who played in 2010 had anything else that ranked higher career wise.  On the other hand few would remember an OFC Nations Cup win with a huge amount of fondness

Teams are always eager to talk about their internationals - Ipswich love mentioning Monty P on Twitter, Sunderland probably wouldn't have got Sam B on board if he wasn't one. Even if we might scoff at caps being handed out easily, it's an adjective that carries a bit of gravitas.

It's also about honour, and pride, and about doing the hard yards so they can get the rewards of a Confeds Cup or a World Cup. You can't skip the Oceania qualifiers or the East Asian friendlies and then expect to come in for the big gigs.

Even if it's a different style of football or game plan, it's 10 days five times a year, so it's not going to compromise anyone, or limit them. Can it hinder guys when they're trying to break through? Maybe, but people get called up for international duty everywhere, and I'm not keen to let players off the hook due to the shark attitudes of their clubs.

You might also say injury risk is a reason not to and point to Harshae Raniga or Henry Cameron or Liam Graham, but that's just shark luck.

Do have some sympathy for Boyd, making himself unavailable for AWs in bid to establish in Europe. Playing at OFC Nations Cup (given ugly football played, state of pitch etc etc), wouldn't have helped his development at all.

However he has had plenty of chances since then to pick up phone, and talk to Hudson if he wants in. He would have to be living under a rock, and not following NZ football at all - if he didn't know Tommy Smith had done that, and then be welcomed back into the fold.

Tondela's next game is at home verus Porto. Hopefully Boyd smashes a 30 yard volley in past Iker Casillas, and then next day him & Hudson have a heart to heart.

I think for any professional the NT jersey is first and foremost a way to promote yourself on the world stage, no matter at what level you play. Of course you will feel proud and all that, but unless you a top player in a top NT, playing International matches exposes you to such a large audience, lots of scouts and may open some very interesting doors.

unfortunately not many scouts care to watch New Zealand scrape past a Solomon Islands team playing like pub footballers.

The ONC is two weeks long, and was five matches - including a final with a lot on the line, which several players talk of as their biggest test yet in their careers. Boyd's alternative was fitness. Not football, as it was the offseason. Kidding if you think it would have any negative impact on him, especially the 'ugly football'

Did Chris Wood leave for the final to attend a wedding too?

Plus, how regularly is Winston Reid unavailable? I know he's the best player and captain, but still.

Not trying to be a smart arse, but which AWs players talked about OFC Nations as being biggest test of their careers to date? More curious than anything

The wood situation is different, his Sister scheduled her wedding to occur around the OFC Nations cup but the OFC rescheduled the nations cup after the dates were announced - so he and his family tried their best to make it work out and it was just the ineptitude of the OFC that screwed things up for them. The way NZF/Hudson handled it on the other hand was appalling.

Honestly, I think this is absolute nonsense. Boyd is playing in a decent European league, how does he get more exposure with the all whites?

May have over shot the moon there in not being quite exact; but Stefan Marinovic has talked about it as a big moment; Hudson has called that tournament/game a massive factor in the squad developing a strong mentality; Rory Fallon said "I really feel the PNG tournament really strengthened the squad. We went through a lot together in that tournament, and those tournaments make or break a team," earlier this year, talking about the younger guys.

So was Reid but he got a premier league gig partiality off the back of the AWs. But we want players who will play for the shirt not because if the opportunities that it might bring.

Kip Colvey kind of touches on it here too: Colvey said the players were aware that it was a win at all costs tournament.

"We knew what was at stake. We talked quite a bit as a team at night before the games about what we needed to do and that we needed to perform and there were players with injuries [that were unavailable] so we were fighting for them too."

The likes of Adams, Brotherton, Colvey, Marinovic (until he had the promotion playoff earlier this year), Patterson, maybe Fenton (played v Mexico in 2013) would probably think that.

For example, when the Confeds Cup is on, or when the intercontinental playoffs are on, not a lot else is.

I can't help having a suspicion that if Boyd was ever up to reading about himself on this thread- doubtful, too much time training, playing, learning Portuguese, eating, sleeping, watching movies - he'd be pissing himself with laughter. Face it, he's got his own agenda, i.e looking after No. 1. Ernie gave up on him, Hudson's given up on him. There are mavericks in every sport in every country, and he's ours. As someone said here, he's no Ronaldo so best left alone until he becomes one or at least shows some patriotic intent otherwise if he was sweet- talked back into the AW's God knows what effect he'd have on the rest of the squad.

yea but thats the difference between world cup and oceania in how winston got picked up. Also half our players currently and previously wouldnt have played for NZ had it not been for NZ being an easy route into international football tournaments i.e. Winston with the world cup.

I dont mind if the players a cock head, if he plays well and helps us win draw then thats good enough.

Geez, is this still going on?

The boy's done good. Playing in the Portuguese league. Hope we get to see him some day. Hope he gets better and plays well. Thought he had some skills when the 'Nix were absolutely dire and it's good the 'Nix were able to be a pathway. Ernie wouldn't have been so pissed off with him if he didn't think he had some talent.

Anyway- keep us updated.

Thomas, Wood, Boyd...only hope we can get someone into the Bundesliga soon...

I can totally understand why Boyd didn't come back to play. It's hard enough trying to etasblish yourself at a club when you are from NZ and don't speak the language etc. I think in hindsight he's made the right call. Played 2 seasons in a reserve side and shown some worth obviously. Now playing in a good league which to be honest I have him little chance of doing when he left. So good on him.

Look where Bill T is now. Bet he wishes he stayed back for that pre season.

But by the same token I'm also supportive of Hudsons stance. I think there needs to be some give and take and some players will use the AWs to spring board their careers - eg Reid and Marinovic- and we probably expect more in return. Whereas others probably need to graft and get there the hard way and we should respect that.

But with the islands catching up and our limited games we need to get players back. I think it's why we need a balance and depth in the squad so if a young guy is trialling etc we can cut him some slack - eg Lewis in future

For a start he wasn't playing for the 1st team when he allegedly turned down his call up, and secondly even though I am not a scout, I believe representing your NT is huge for professional footballers' careers - your market value goes up, exposure increases, you can be considered an "elite" player, even if you represent a smaller country. I remember a certain Mario Frick and more recently Martin Buchel, Liechtensteiner footballers who ended up playing in Serie A... I very much that representing their country would have helped them get noticed on the European stage.

Same applies to our players...was Marinovic picked up by his new club for his great performances in the lower leagues in Germany? Was Rojas signed by Stuttgard based solely on his performances in the A-League? I think playing International football really helped.

This being said, I agree with those who think AH has double standards though and doesn't treat all players equally when unavailable.
