What a difference a few years make in football

To think we held Howieson at the same level as Woody

Scored quite a good free kick against Suarez era Liverpool apparently. Seemed to be playing in similar competition.

Yes at the time he was one of our hopes for the future, funnily enough Liverpool were said to have been interested in him while he was contracted with Burnley. Though now of course it seems ludicrous to put him in the same bracket as Wood. Of those players listed, only four are regular All Whites - Rojas, Wood, Kosta and Thomas. Fenton and Brockie don't really get a look in, Howieson and Payne aren't even pro's anymore, and Smeltz hasn't played like a pro for a while now too. Oh how the times change

Crazy to think Tim Payne’s still only 23, remember he was absolutely sick on FIFA 13 when he signed for Blackburn. Howieson was huge for Burnley’s youth too, failed in the Scottish 2nd div and now he’s a nobody on the world stage sadly. Wood was always pretty huge, something i didn’t actually know was that he played in the Europa League for Birmingham (where he scored a winner vs Club Brugge in the 10th minute of injury time) when he was still a teenager, younger than guys like Patterson and Bevan are now. Anyway, this is Boyd’s page, right? Good player

I made a lot of money from that goal!

I read an article over the weekend (can't remember where though) saying the Portuguese referees are possibly going on strike next weekend and that it is in the rules of their FA that, should a ref be unavailable, a player (captain?) could actually be in charge of the game...pretty crazy if it does happen.

I want him back, him and Krishna could be a lethal front two. then play Vidosic and Mcglinchey as attacking wide mids, Paracki and Ridenton as DM's. Would be decent

So you're saying that we replace AK (joint top scorer in the league) with a guy who has one goal in 11 games this season and it'd be lethal? Boyd had one golden goalscoring run for WeeNix and one senior Nix game but over the rest of his career he's hardly made a name for himself as a goalscorer. So your formation would see us have one less central mid than we currently have and one less genuine striker. What's the upside? Boyd has better hair?

Gunna go out on a limb and say he might have been better off to stay at the 'Nix. Think he would definitely have got more game time. He might surprise, but he's not doing much starting at the moment.

Settle down, this was a few weeks back and AK wasn't top goalscorer, wasn't completely sold on him yet and was yearning for a bit more pace up front. Fudge the formation, but i would still take him as a winger in a front three with K9 and Roy, Vidosic coming into the 10. Also I said could be lethal, more implying that with more game time he could do really well with us. He's an upgrade on Parkhouse anyway, and means we could use our marquee spot for a CB or DM

You posted it on 28 November. AK had 5 goals in 7 games for us at that point.

Sorry if I sounded like a dick but I just found it a very weird suggestion, reminded me of all that time under Ernie trying to play some variation of a 4-4-2 but with no genuine striker and two pacy wingers/wide forwards up front. I've got PTSD from how awful that was since Burns went off the boil and it makes me lash out. I should seek therapy.

Nah mate you're right, was embarrassed looking back at that formation, I too am now getting flashbacks of last season when Finkler was shunted out wide and Bonevacia playing up top in a 4-4-2. Horrible stuff. About AK though, 5 in 7 is fantastic but i just wasn't fully onboard with him yet; one of those being a pen and at least one other a tap in that even Watson could net, and he had had a number of games/second halves when he went completely missing. He's completely put that beyond doubt now though, he's proven he's top quality. Would still take Boyd back though, upon review as a winger instead

Scoring against Benfica would be a career highlight for any Kiwi player.

Shame that Tyler rarely starts and has so few minutes this season:

https://us.soccerway.com/players/tyler-boyd/215116/

One start, 10 sub apps, 319mins in the league so far this season.

Tondela lie 12th on the table and look to have a decent chance of surviving in the top flight now.

Big game for Tyler on Sunday am NZT as Tondela are away to Vitória Guimarães, his former club.

Good summation Big Pete.

At least Boyd is getting some minutes in the Portuguese top flight. With Vitoria last season he got zero. Also Vitoria is still effectively his current club, as he is on loan to Tondela for this season.

Tondela beat Vitoria 1-0. Boyd not in match day squad which is unusual, so yes loan deal may have prohibited playing against his parent club.

looking at the Loot I'd say he was flying out of Istanbul headed to Barca.  All brands that can be got for a couple of quid there (except the Audi).

Not required from bench in a 2-1 loss to Moreirense.

Interesting to see whether he makes himself available for AWs, re camp and Canada game in nearby Spain.

It’s up to him to reach out to NZF. Though new coach may go to Tyler himself.

I think the coach, being new, will contact all the players he's interested in. The fact that he made himself unavailable in the past won't matter to him.  Obviously it's up to Boyd to make himself available if called upon.  I really hope this scenario eventuates.

I read an article yesterday where some big wig in an official role in Australian player development named Didulica (Joey's brother, forgot his name) was advocating that the Socceroos recruit and cap Daniel Arzani at the World Cup in order to prevent him from playing for Iran

This triggered some thoughts...

1. Why beg? Wouldn't you want Arzani to be desperate to represent Australia? And,

2. If a team like the Socceroos are willing to recruit and beg players, why do we make our players beg to be involved? And,

3. What happens after you beg someone to come on board? Do they then become complacent and do as they wish?

Then this got me thinking about uncle Anfony and what a good job he did in this regard. He recruited actively, possibly even begged players to come in to his setup. However, once the players were there, they were subjected to his standards. Take Dane Ingham for example, recruited, begged maybe, but the hammer came down hard when he came into camp unfit. Tommy Smith, key player, excluded until he showed a willingness to be involved. Gleeson, Boyd, excluded until they showed a willingness to be involved, which they apparently never did.

Of course, the rules need to be clear to the players

I'm cool with this. Without these standards, we will never achieve anything. And, sorry league fans, but we don't want to All White to be like the Kiwis whose northern hemishere tours are just an end of season drug and booze trip

Agree with you 100%.  Anfony was outstanding in the way he encouraged players to switch allegiance and play for us.  That's something we simply can't pass up.  I've always said it, if you think someone might be good enough for an AW jersey, do what you can to get him on the field.  If it doesn't work out, so be it, plenty of fish in the sea.

I think Aussie are in a similar boat, albeit they're less desperate.  But if we consider their large migration/second generation population,  there are a lot of promising youngsters who qualify for more than one country and they do their best to get them in green and yellow.

Boyd hasn't done anything to demand selection. He has had 2 starts in the league this season and has been subbed in or an unused sub the rest of the time. He is hardly scoring for a striker. I would love for him to get more game and to prove his case. He has to be a better option than Smeltz, Patterson or Fallon. However, I would still take Brockie over him given that he is getting playing time and goals.

The irony that hudson would probably love a player of Boyd's quality for his Colorado team given that Boyd probably has a USA passport.
