Boyd has no hope of playing for the USA. He is getting game time in a decent league. That gets you into the New Zealand team but not too many in the top 50. It's not like his attacking returns are super impressive.

USA’s team is piss poor right now, plus the new manager’s experimenting and calling up all kinds of uncapped players right now

There are thousands of kids and adults taking the field every Saturday that would give anything to represent New Zealand. His “I’m not cap tied so...” attitude is pretty hard to take.

I watched the first half of this game. Amazing atmosphere at the ground...a very big crowd made lots of noise. Both sides played a high  standard of football...there are plenty of good players in the better Portuguese teams.

Shame for Boyd that he had an injury that kept him out for a few weeks. its hard to break back into a winning side. The guy who plays in his position looked like a very good player. Boyd  just needs to bide his time and work hard in training and his chance will come.

Vitoria are now in 5th place on the table. They had a poor start to the season but are now picking up points. It would be amazing for Boyd if they made it through to Europe.....maybe not Champions league but Europa league is possible.

Pretty similar to when Costa (as he was) was shunning NZ for Greece and Romania back in the day......until he realised that NZ was his best/only option. It's a fair enough mind-set to go for the biggest fish first.....and it's often worked for us, with Smith, McG, Fallon, Dura, Themi, Winston, so on and so forth.

I think Reid is an interesting one. Based on trajectory his career took, he definitely would have ended up making the Denmark team.

Others will know more about this than me, and I'd love to hear what is known by others, but I believe that a big reason that West Ham signed him was his 2010 World Cup and the relationship between Ricki Herbert and Avraam Grant

Gets 20 mins off the bench as Vitoria beat Moreirense 1-0.

Score already 1-0 when Boyd introduced.

A minute after Boyd was subbed in Vitoria had their goal scorer sent off, so probably reduced his chances to shine in an attacking sense.

Loaned to Ankaragücü in the Turkish Super League.

https://www.sabah.com.tr/spor/futbol/2019/01/30/an... (nice little graphic they made for him lol)

Currently 15th out of 18 teams in the league, and their recent league form doesn't bode well - played 5, won 0, drew 0, lost 5, scored 0, conceded 16, including a 6-0 drubbing to Galatasaray. Hope he bangs on and gets some regular game time. Interestingly Ankaragücü are level on points with Fenerbahce who have had an absolute shocker of a season

Seems a shame that he's shifting to a rather different environment rather than going to a smaller Portuguese team again, given how well he did at Tondela.

Yes would suck somewhat, having learnt Portuguese to head off to Turkey, even just for a few months.

Still get the feeling Boyd is pretty mentally tough. He may a polarising figure now re his current AWs unavailability, but you couldn’t question his drive and ambition.

Reception seems fairly mixed, since they already have a lot of wide players (including 31y/o ex-Roma, Atletico Madrid, Milan and Italy winger Alessio Cerci who he'll be competing with), but he's very underrated here in NZ and I hope he really kicks on, has bags of potential now that he's learned to become a bit less selfish and get some end product. Now hopefully he chooses NZ!

Cerci is a real dud! But that's still an interesting choice... I wonder if he was told to go out on loan or else? Maybe fell out of favor after his injury? Or money issues at his parent club?

I know its subjective but I don't think moving from Portugal to Turkey isn't necessarily a retrograde step.

Travelling through Turkey 20 years ago I loved the country, though never got to Ankara, where I see Ankaragucu are based.

https://us.soccerway.com/teams/turkey/mke-ankaragu...

Probably a bit more tense there these days, with Erdogan in charge, and the tragedy of Syria just over the border.

Could be a move that is bad for Boyd's supposed US ambitions, so might shorten the odds of him committing to AWs. He would definitely be an asset, just based alone on video highlights of his exploits with Tondela last season.

Not sure why it would be bad for his supposed US ambitions, he's moving to a similar quality league and should get more game time. Positive move if anything. (not that I think he's actually making the US team regardless).

But also the most targeted city for terroist acts due to that reason. I thinks it's a good move though and could well see him playing in front of bigger crowds and TV audiences.

I agree don't think he is seriously on the Team USA radar, but they would be more aware of him if he was a first team regular at Vitoria (5th in Primeira Liga), rather than shipped off to the 15th best team in Turkey.

Yeah okay then. Bit of a surprise at the end of the January transfer window, Boyd had disappeared out of the matchday squads for the last couple games with VSC but he’s not exactly got guaranteed a spot there so not necessarily a warning sign. Vitória hadn’t signed anyone to replace him either… however his extended absence with injury earlier on in the season perhaps didn’t help his prospects for extended football. So along comes this news and alrighty, fair enough. Gotta get those minutes.

That news being that Tyler Boyd is joining Turkish top flight club MKE Ankaragücü on loan for the remainder of the season. He’s contracted until the middle of 2020 (one more season after this) and was recently announced as the Revelation of the Year at the sporting club’s annual awards for 2018. Breakout player, in other words. Meaning that this is probably an opportunity to play more games rather than a cheap way to offload him. Score some goals and come back steaming… after all his last loan spell at CD Tondela went pretty bloody good – that’s what got him into the VSC first team in the first place.

Tyler Boyd: “This is a new country for me, it's time to get success in a new city and with a new team. My goal is to play to my best abilities and contribute to Ankaragücü reaching its goals.”

Sweet as, so for the rest of the season he’s now a winger for MKE Ankaragücü in the Turkish Super Lig. He’s not alone either, as the club have also brought in a former teammate of Chris Wood’s at Leeds – Hadi Sacko. Him and a bunch of defenders. Plus before the season they signed Youness Mokhtar who played with Ryan Thomas at PEC Zwolle. What a small world, hey? Except Mokhtar has since left the club so apparently Boydie can replace him or something. If this sounds like a lot of work for a January window, that’s because Ankaragücü are only two points ahead of the relegation zone with the worst goal difference in the league. They lost 6-0 to Galatasaray a few weeks back. They could use the help.

Say one thing for ol’ Boyd, he’s a trailblazer. Haven’t had an NZ-born footy player crack the top league in Portugal ever before and gonna have to assume he’ll be the first All White to play professionally in Turkey as well (at least until he changes affiliation to the USA if indeed that ever happens – eligible for both, his call, no dramas). Turkey… doesn’t really feel like the first country you’d necessarily wanna move to, global politics being what they are, but tell you what… they don’t skimp on the media budgets over there. Look at the creativity involved in this bad boy!

Didn’t quite make the difference in his first game, playing ninety minutes on the right wing as the Ankas lost 1-0 to Trabzonspor. Hugo Rodallega’s cheeky goal was the only one. Definitely the second best team on the night, though Boyd had one of the side’s better opportunities with a long range drive that drew a quality save out of the keeper. The fact that he’s gone straight into the starting team is a positive one, also positive is that Bein Sports tend to pick up the odd Turkish league game if you happen to subscribe to those folks.

Bagged an assist in a 3-0 win over Kasimpasa. The club's first goals in the league since December 1st, their first win since November 4th, and first clean sheet since October 22nd!

Boyd apparently with a great performance - Turkish twitter's going crazy over him, saying the club must buy him, best winger on the team, I love Tyler Boyd, etc. One of four nominees for player of the round in the Super Lig.

Soccerway actually credits him with two assists. He also gets a yellow.

Rather uniquely I note the starting eleven for Ankaragucu, consisted of 11 different nationalities! So don’t be surprised if English is the language of choice in the dressing room. There is even a left back from Portugal (Boyd was also playing on the left), so almost the ideal new Turkish team for Boyd to settle into.

Even better!

Noticed the whole nationality thing when I looked at their Wikipedia, but never would have thought they'd be fielding 11 different nationalities at once, that's wild. Hopefully makes the settling in process for Boyd a lot easier to handle, in a roundabout way - everybody's in the same boat, as there were 12 foreign signings in January. Portuguese left back and Jamaican striker played today so ideal for Boyd in terms of language

Ankaragucu in blue. Boyd left winger, number 30.

Actually two assist is generous. Passes to Sacko for the 2nd goal, and the ex Leeds man scores with a long range spectacular. Clever play from Boyd to set up the 3rd goal for sure. In between he has his own strike which shoots over the bar.

Promising stuff.

Doesn't mean much I know, but Mile Jedinak went from CCM (age 23-24) to Genclerbirligi, who were a mid-lower Turkish side at the time. He had 3 seasons in Turkey. From there he went onto Crystal Palace, and The Championship/EPL.
