Amongst all the Intercontinental Playoff/OFC tourney draw dramas, it's been overlooked Boyd could still come against his old AW team June 13th-14th next year.

Slim chance you'd think yes at the moment, with him seemingly well out of the USNMT picture. Club & national career having gone downhill somewhat.

Unused sub overnight as Rizespor lose 0-1 in Turkish Cup to 3rd tier side Ankaraspor. Rizespor will be busy focused on trying to avoid relegation. Bottom of Süper Lig 14 games, into the 38 game season. Boyd 11 games with 9 starts, no goals.

Low point being sent off 12 mins in, against Champness's Giresunspor (and likely relegation rivals) back in mid Oct. Joey C scoring his first late act Giresunspor goal in that one.

This is Boyd's 4th Süper Lig club in Turkey, and to be fair at two of those Ankaragücü (6 SL goals, now down in the Turkish 2nd tier) & Sivasspor (5 SL Goals, loaned there from Besiktas) he's done well and been a key player. Hence why Besiktas signed him. And from memory was then, with his club career doing well, he switched national camps.

Though their switches away from NZ were both hugely disappointing, like Stensness don't really wish him any ill wind. If they don't feel 'Kiwi' enough it's hard to change that feeling. Plus when Boyd switched the AWs weren't even playing, let alone tracking along nicely like they are now.

But looks likely the 26 yr old may one day regret his decision to switch nationalities. There are alot of other ex Ole boys now in the AWs setup, incl longtime mate Thomas. There would certainly be an irony if they were at Qatar, having beaten that CONCACAF playoff team and he wasn't.

Credit where it is due, he's gone to Portugal initially and since carved out a good career already, by Kiwi standards pretty much on his own. Seems focused & determined, so he might get back to Besiktas level you never know. But at 26, time not on his side.
