Just read this, I think its in his best interest if he choose's USA over NZ for national senior team selection. Plus he wont have visa issues playing in the MLS(if he was to go there).
Tyler Boyd - USA (Nashville SC | USA)
Interesting, but also likely irrelevant. He'll never play for the USA, and if he decides to make himself eligible for them, it'll likely be no big loss, NZ football has a lot of depth in those wide forward positions atm and for the future.
Like who?
Considering Boyd would either play up front or as an attacking winger of some sort, we have - Rojas, Smeltz, Brockie, Kosta, Ryan Thomas, potentially Howieson/Wood/Payne, even Fenton depending on how the new manager utilises them. Plenty of talent.
I actually think just nobody cared to ask him before, if he had been asked that last year, I'd say he'd have said the same thing.
I don't think he sounds arrogant in that iv. Says that he's finding his confidence, and that he's fortunate to have a bit of pace. He comes across pretty well I reckon.
Yeah I think it's a worthwhile article too, not too many people were aware of it, somewhat interesting due to his recent performances. At worst it's an item of newsworthy interest for some people.
Oh lord. Non news story makes news. Boyd about 10th in the AW queue so makes him about 50th for Team America (**** yEAH!)
Think it might just be a cry to try and get called up to the NZ full squad against Japan! Watch this space...

he's still only 18, so he's got a long way to go. However I believe it'd be a long time before the US national team would take an interest in him, and even by then the all whites would have picked him already.

Why would the US care? There might be probably hundreds of better players in the US college system alone, and then there's the MLS and everything else. And they're all playing on US soil under the noses of their own coaches. Unless he breaks into a top euro league in the next 2-3 seasons nobody over there is going to care.
As much chance of playing for USA as Rory Fallon had of playing for the senior England side (and he played international football for England at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels).
As a teenage player, it's good that he has some ambition though...
But the reality is they have heaps of more talented young players eligible for the USA but have grown up overseas - funnily enough including German - American Terrence Boyd, Rapid Vienna first choice striker (22 goals in 50 games):
There are lots of young Americans these days at decent clubs around the world such as teenager Brek Shea at Stoke City:

If he makes the grade and is good enough to be a starter in the MLS in the future, good on him. He will never play for them though as others have pointed out.
Interesting that he's spent more time living in America than Nz.
JV probably considers him an import

I think he knows he will only ever play for NZ, and never the US, but doesn't want to say that as he thinks saying he is undecided may induce a call up to the NZ team.
Fair enough though I would do the same if I was in his position.
think it's just a reporter finally tacking notice of the kid who has done weel the last few weeks - did some researcha dn asked where Boyd wanted to play internationally.....actually good reporting - ie he did the research and asked relevant questions - as for Boyd's chances, unlikely he'd be even on the US radar playing in the a-league.
Explains having a first name of Tyler, then.

Some more names that can be considered "American""
Kasey Keller
Brad Friedel
Clint Dempsey

As an American (who currently calls Wellington home), i refuse to claim him until he gets a haircut. :D
I like the way he's playing for the Phoenix currently, sure, but as everyone else has pointed out, there isn't really any chance of him playing for the US, unless he makes an almost inconceivable jump. Solid player, and will be a good A-League/MLS player for a long time, IMO, but not a US international.
All our military bases in Germany are finally paying off with a nice crop of German-American players (:D), and we've got plenty of Mexican-American players to choose from as well, on top of all the other domestic talent.
Currently excited by Julian Green, an 18-year old German-American with Bayern Munich (mostly with youth team, though has had a few 1st team call ups, i think), though we could lose him to Germany (currently playing with with their U-19s).
Good for Boyd to keep his options open, though, and if he can leverage it into an AW call-up, more power to him.
He will get an All Whites call up in the next few years. Smeltz, Killen & Fallon are near the end of their careers, there isn't many ahead of him in the queue.

Good comment! Some names mark someone as American. We had a mini u-17 World Cup in Christchurch in 1998 building up to NZ hosting the real thing in 1999 with the USA joining NZ, South Africa and Tahiti in a tournament. US team players whose names I'll never forget (a couple are indeed world-famous now):
Delvin Countess (the US goalie)
DaMarcus Beasley
Landon Donovan
Seth Trembly
Kellen Kalso
Squad for the 1999 Finals in NZ: http://www.soccertimes.com/usteams/1999/oct27.htm
That was a solid squad. Donovan and Beasley as well as Ogechi Oneywu (sp?).
That sort of attitude has never really been one that American soccer players have had, so not sure where that is coming from. Eddie Johnson had a bit of it recently with his "pay me" antics in Seattle, but that is about it. American soccer players, given the status of the sport in the country for so long, are generally not the types that you would ever describe as "arrogant." They aren't a bunch of NBA-players masquerading as soccer players. :D
i assume no one asked him about his international intentions when he was selected for the new zealand A side or the under 20s?
I'm not sure he's thought this through
I'm not sure he's thought this through
I'm not sure he's thought this through
That is really unfair.
Go for it!

I don't see anything wrong with what he's saying. He's just saying he has the option to play for the US if they want him to. It's obvious to all that they won't, but nothing wrong with reminding NZ football he's keen to play for the AWs.
I know a few players that had played for one nation over another, Then never got selected again (ever). This may happen to Boyd if he was to be selected to play for the USA in a friendly as what others here have stated = The USA have a lot of talent all over the world and in better leagues then Boyd just waiting for call ups to the senior squad.
