hammers 1-0 up at HT and dominating

Reid playing at LB which is pretty cool, played right across the back for westham now...

Only comment referring to Reid on Soccernet Gamecast is a good one;

"35min: Jerome takes on Reid down the left flank but the defender wins the battle."

"Have to say, Reid at the moment reminds of Tomkins of old, very nervous in distributing the ball but good for a last ditch tackle. I guess he'll replace Upson next season. Think he'll do ok. "

"I thought his first half was excellent. Bit more mixed in the second half but central defence is the hardest position to bed new players in because there's nowhere to hide if they make a mistake. Will be a good learning experience for the lad"

just back from the game.  Our Winnie did alright although he seemed to lose his man for the Brum goal (will need to see a replay to confirm).  He played centre back with Tompko, and Upson at left back.  His passing was pretty shoddy when under pressure but did everything simple when he had more time.

We are signing Wayne Bridge today so Upson will return to centre back with Tompko with Reid competing with Da Kosta for next cab off the rank (unless we manage to get rid of Upson in the transfer window)

i think he'll still be on the bench but grants gotta bring him on with say 20 to go to give him more confidence.

musa is a perfect example. herbert used rojas well but musa came in cold. i imagine musa would be getting more game time and pressuring lochhead if he had been

How often do you see a CB get subbed?  Hardly ever.

LB and RB more so, but maily to put a more attacking option.

Fair to say that when you are a CB, it's either 0 minutes or 90 minutes.

I see he made Mr September on the club calendar this year and also sneaked in for a background shot in January's photo of Upson. Cunning Maori, anything for a  bit of free publicity.

Same. I think he went in too quickly, about 20 metres from the goal line and right on the sideline, couldn't recover from his momentum and the Everton player turned and crossed. That said, there was still ample opportunity for West Ham to clear from the cross- others made a hash of it.

Still, not his greatest moment, and did look a bit familiar- I am sure I have seen him in similar situations. Kind of like the pressure of defending a 1 nil lead, under constant attack, and only minutes to go got to him a bit (although in fairness to him, he had just come on into that cauldron, and had no time to assess the pace of the game).

Avram Grant was really enthusiastic about Winston on the WHUFC website.

Give poor Winston a bit of slack. If his gaffer rates him that good enough for me. Adapting to become a good defender in the EPL must be one of the hardest jobs there is.....especially playing for a bottom team. Winston is still really young for an EPL defender.....but he has all the physical attributes. If he works hard and applies himself and is mentally tough enough then he could have a long career at that level. I'm rapt for the guy.

You could also argue Winston's progressed much further at this age than Ryan did. Which surely isn't a bad thing.
