What the hell has happened to Winston. WH reserves played yesterday and he did not play and is not on the team sheet for the game against Utd?

not a lot of confidence in reids potential from a lot of the comments on that article. lets just hope he can prove them wrong

Eh, some very fair/true comments

"With reid it is clear he has potential to bee a very good CB in the future. At the moment he is just lacking abit of coaching and experience however he has potential and is a long term signing. Next season I think he should play in the championship for 1 whole season because he would learn and improve alot, whether it is with us or with another team it doesnt matter. For a championship team he woudl play something like 40 times, every sat and Wednesday pretty much. He woudl learn and develop allot and come back to us a much better player.

After the game in the weekend, it is pretty clear that he is behind Upson, Da Kosta and Tompkins in the pecking order, as well as possibly Gabbidon and Wally Downes.  Upson (and I think Gabbidon) will go in the summer, so I guess his position will then depend on which division we are in, and who else comes and goes (obviously).  If we go down, I can see him being first choice with Tomkins.  If we stay up, f**ks knows.

I am not so sure about going on loan, as it does not automatically mean an improvement.  For every Chris Wood who has gone and done well, developing as a player by getting games week in, week out, there is someone like Freddie Sears who has gone to Palace and Sc**thorpe but not really come on.  He actually seems better when he has stayed with the club and trained with better players and coaches.  So much depends on where the player goes.

If the Hammers stay up (sadly very unlikely, sorry Frankie) I'd say go on loan to somewhere like Hull City or even a team that comes down form the EPL. He'd get good game time in a decent set-up where the environment is like the EPL clubs. If the Hammers do go down then I think he'll establish himself well as the others (Upson, Gabbidon, Da Kosta) will move on. whatever happens, good luck to the lad. Him, Boxall, Siggy and Smith are key to the AW's future and we need them to play regularly.

Remember something else though:Grant will surely be sent back to the kibbutz, and the new manager may have a different view as to Reid's abilities(like/dislike who knows?).Look what happened to Tommy Smith at Ipswich:a regular under Keane, yet dumped by Jewell and now farmed out to the mighty Colchester.Everything is up in the air for Winnie I reckon...

Smith was dropped by Keane before Jewell took over.  Jewell just continued with those that played the last games under Keane and the interim coaching staff. Hard News2011-05-04 17:16:10

The point is still the same:things can change very quickly at clubs, and pre-supposing that Reid will be a regular at relegated West Ham next season is premature.

as West Ham are unlikely to recoup much of the 3m we spent on Reid, it is a pretty safe bet that he will be there next season if we get relegated.  It is also a pretty safe bet that he will start the summer as one of only 2 or 3 senior centre backs (alongside Tompkins and Da Kosta if we cannot get rid of him), and we will not have a lot of money to spunk on new signings, so there will not be a lot else coming in.  Ipto facto (ergo?) he will have a very good chance to establish himself as part of a first choice centre back partnership.

He may fall out of favour with the new manager, but his legs may also fall off in the summer.

What about Jordan Spence?Next season he probably fancies his chances too:since Reid's performances have been mixed at best,I'd say anything's possible...

Reid to me looks like someone who needs some good coaching.  Physically he has the talent but he just tends to look a bit hesitant and uncertain.  He's not getting the game time which is a factor but he's not looking confident.  I'm one who thinks thta Avram Grant is a genuine bluffer so for me it can't be a bad thing if uncle avvy gets the chop and Winston gets a new manager in.  Marti O'Neill for example would be very interesting

We will not get O'Neill, especially if we are in the Championship.  Wally Downes came in a few months ago as our defensive coach, and is pretty highly rated (even if it is only for yelling and threatening to head butt people) so working with him will not do him any harm.

Theres more to defending?

On a serious note I hope he can kick on and end up an EPL regular in the future...more game time wouldnt hurt him (easier said than done)

I did - I've seen a match in person remember? . I also know that Chievo traditionally wore biancazzurri, but copied our colours (and added Verona to their name) in order to try and steal fans from us. Fact is, if go anywhere in Italy and refer to gialloblu, Italians will think you're talking about Hellas Verona. Except for perhaps a certain undesirable Veronese suburb...

In conclusion, Chievo merda, vaffanculo mussivolanti!

That's exactly what I thought! It's not even pretending to be a story, at least make something up like 'sources have revealed' or 'media reports indicate'. It's just lazy

He'll stay. He's still young and West Ham won't sell him when they would't regain the same money they paid for him less than a year ago. Especially when he could do a job in the Championship (hopefully).

Opinions seem split on this, could go either way. Will depend on how much they are paying him, whether he will take a cut, how much they can sell him for and whether the new manager wants him. West Ham are already in a bit of a financial mire so if they sell off all their most valuable players, and he is willing to take a paycut, he might stay.

Personally I amm not sure, now he has admitted being talked to by Seria A and Bundesliga and other English teams hasn't he? Injuries did not help him in his first season. And even then half the time he was playing as a RB. But when he played against Championship teams he seemed to look the part. So I have no doubts he can do well in the Championship. Its really weather WH wants to keep him on. Even then he is not the worst defender in the WHU ranks...

I also feel soory for him because of who he played alongside of - no one lead the West Ham back line with any sort of authority or direction.

Not a single CB this season for them would get a passing mark. When your a oung player you need someone to lead and direct you... he didn't get that.

whichever way you look at it,Reid has been a very expensive flop:4 million for a player with little big time experience reflects badly on Grant's judgement.Throw in another 4 million for that Mexican winger and no wonder the Hammers are in the championship...

I am pretty sure that Reid was somewhere about the 2m mark, so about half the price that you are talking about.  Also, his age and price suggests that he was signed to develop over the next 2 or 3 years so it is a bit premature to claim he is an expensive flop.  If at the end of next season he is still 4th or 5th choice and has no resale value, then he can legitimately be called a flop, but it needs some more time.

so big Sam's the new coach.  Guess we'd better get used to not having Winston Reid for friendlies/qualifiers.

Big Sam's defensive nous (and tendencies) might help Winstone develop as a player

(not his flair, but I expect he'll develop good concentration and a bit of steel if he stays with the club)
