Is that because he doesn't look like making the grade at rovers?

No it is because they showed interest and it was a good experience for him. He still has work to do at Rovers but things are hardly going terribly for him there.

Why would Rovers allow that though - if he is any good which i believe he is, surely then the are opening up the possiblity of him moving on??

Learning how to trial is a good experience if your looking at club because your a free agent, but not when you are contracted (even only on a youth contract)

Imagine having an employee say to you, hey boss i'm going to go to a few job interviews, not because i'm looking for another job or anything. I just want the experience... no way!!

Are we talking 6-figure in the UK or here?

Here I could buy at a very long stretch, but no-one in the conference is getting 100,000 pounds a year.
Seems even some players in the Conference South are on up to 2000 pounds per week- which adds up to six figures UK over a year- a bit more than 100,000 pounds over a year...
Assume some players in the Conference National such as Wrexham, Luton Town etc. would be on more than this...
Don't forget average wages are deceptive- some players can be receiving heaps whilst fringe players, young players etc receive much less...
Evidence from a major UK football discussion site which some players and agents also contribute to:

With regards to wages, totally depends on the level of club your going to be playing for and the aspirations of the club. Many lower league teams dont even bother with contracts and sign players on non-contract terms wages will tend to be minimal and travel expenses are usually covered. Contact players, ive worked with a few at conference south level that were getting paid 2000 a week, but to be fair they were playing way below what they should of been at the time.

hope it helps,

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I'm a non-league footballer at Eastbourne Borough in the Blue Square Premier. We are one of only 2 clubs in that league not to be full time! Even though it is a non-professional league, all but a few of the players that I know at EB live entirely off their football income, which ranges from around 250 a week for players graduating from the reserves and youth, to around 700 as the top earner, plently to live off. As we only train 2 evenings a week presently, there is plently of time for the players to have other jobs, and there are definitely a few who fill their spare time labouring, building, plastering and the like to suplement their income!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Interesting details from the BBC on wages in Premiership and Football League:

    April 2006, 08:58 GMT 09:58 UK

    Survey reveals footballers' wages
    <!-- S BO --><!-- S IIMA -->
The average Premiership footballers salary is 676,000
<!-- E IIMA --><!-- S SF -->Premiership footballers earn an average of 676,000 per year, according to a survey by The Independent and the Professional Footballers' Association.

That figure, which equates to 13,000 per week, typically rises by between 60% and 100% when performance-related bonuses are taken into account.

Strikers have the highest average annual salary, with 806,000, while midfielders earn about 754,000.

Defenders earn 653,000 on average and Premiership goalkeepers make 533,000. <!-- E SF -->

The basic pay represents an average rise of around 65% from the average figure in 2000.

Players' bonuses vary enormously - depending on the terms of their deal - but could easily double a footballer's salary.

Bonuses may include appearance money of about 5,000 per game - even if the player only comes on as a last-minute substitute.

    <!-- S I -->

    PREMIERSHIP WAGES BY AGE
    17-18: 24,500
    19-20: 95,000
    21-22: 390,000
    23-24: 582,500
    25-26: 653,000
    27-28: 899,500
    29-30: 806,000
    31-32: 586,000
    33+: 660,500
    Average: 676,000*
(* Average figure takes into account players aged over 20)
<!-- E I -->Signing-on fees are often a six-figure sum, with payments usually spread over the term of a player's contract - for example, a 250,000 signing-on fee, spread over three years, would equate to an extra 1,603 per week.

Players can also look forward to a share of a win bonus following each victory and an end-of-season performance bonus - often related to whether a team stays up or qualifies for Europe.

Further bonuses may follow if a club reaches a cup final and there may also be goal bonuses.

Wages are also staggered according to age, with the highest earners tending to be those aged between 27 and 30.

Salaries drop considerably in lower divisions, although they are still substantial.

Championship players earn an average salary of 195,750, League One players 67,850 and League Two 49,600.

About 400 players across the four professional divisions responded to the survey.

It still find it odd that goal keepers are paid so poorly (although that figure could be brought down by reserve keepers who are probably paid way less than an equivalent reserve outfielder).  For a weaker team a good keeper is goin to earn you a lot of points over a season

So if the Nix are trying to recruit players from.....say, League 1 where the average is 67,000 pounds which is a just over $120,000 NZD then we are in the ball park for matching these wages.

To be fair, this thread isn't titled "Young kiwis playing in the UK above conference level" though. And I think it's kind of interesting knowing about kiwi players playing in the lower leagues.

Give the guy a break Luis. Abris does an excellent job covering all these players in his own time.

I said it many times but i will repeat it again: my goal is not necessarily to speak about kiwis overseas playing at a good level. It's more when a find a new player, I put it on this forum, so at least some other people can add additionnal info about them. Also if a player plays in a lower division, it doesn't mean that in the future he will never be playing at a good level.

For example, I didn't agree when the topic concerning Kayne Vincent was closed because it has been viewed more than 400 times by other persons so there is interest about this guy. He is playing today in Singapoure but he could also get to a higher level in the future...

Thats a bit of a demotion.  Yes TNS play in very early stages of European Cup comps but having watched both sides played, Basingstoke is probably the better side.

Welsh League footie is just a bit bitter then the Northern League, equal to maybe the bottom couple of sides in the NZC.  Yeah Basingstoke are in the 6th tier but its arguably as good as the NZC.

Howieson's signing now confirmed/official at Burnley. Here's a couple of links (Burnley Official site and Clarets Mad).

Ironically (yes, Alanis), I just queried on a Burnley message board yesterday if anyone knew anything about the move, as nothing had reported from any Burnley source to that point in time. And wahoo.

To put it into perspective none of the apprentice intake of two years ago got a professional contract (about 5 or 6 from memory). Usually 1 or 2 of about 6 per year make it beyond apprenticeship, although the attrition rate is pretty high beyond that. There are some very promising 2nd years at the club (been getting runs in the pre-season), and there has been a conscious shift to youth focus under new manager Eddie Howe. So not a bad environment for Cam.

He'll have his work cut out, but good luck to him.
