If he's in camp and they want to cap-tie him, they can.  We've done it before.  It becomes one of those situations where they could cap-tie him "just in case", hence my surprise at his accepting the call-up.

Of course they might just want to look at him in a training environment...

Yes he did. I think all 3 keepers got a game.

Woud has to do what’s best for him, but if I was NZF I’d be a bit annoyed.

He could now rank as no 2 keeper for AWs being 2nd keeper at Wilhem. Gleeson seems well on outer at Portland, and Crocombe not starter for Salford in English 5th tier. So a serious loss if throws his lot in with Holland.

Still AWs have pinched few age internationals off other countries in the past, so glasshouses & stones I guess.

Who?

Ah, yeah sure, but I wondered if coochie meant other less obvious players. Apart from Winston, who probably could have played for Denmark these guys were never in danger of playing for England or Scotland, hence we didn't really pinch them as such

I was thinking those mentioned above, and yes apart from Reid none would have then played senior international football except for AWs. So pinching is I guess poetic licence.

Did either of Ingams (spp) play Aussie age group?

Not sure. I guess we may have pinched them off Samoa though.

I wish we pinched Archie Thompson and Tim Cahill

how likely is he to make it?

He's only been called up into the preliminary 30-man squad, with two other keepers, one of whom is Trevor Doornbusch who is extremely promising and likely to start.

They will cut a keeper when they release the final two-goalkeeper squad, a good chance it'll be Woud left home as he's the least established. Even if he does make it he'll likely be on the bench, so not a huge risk for us as it stands right now.

He has to apply to Fifa to change from New Zealand to the Netherlands, so that will be the crucial point here, not whether he takes the field.

Oh in that case that's a bummer. Really don't think he'll accept though, the Willem II website says it's up to him to accept and it's not a finalised preliminary squad yet

I’m interested to know if he left Sunderland (I think it was Sunderland?) or was let go before he joined Willem II. If he left by choice it could indicate that he’s serious about going Dutch?

Left by choice. Spoke to his mother here the other day. Wanted game time

Yeah, felt he was better than the 3rd or 4th choice spot that Sunderland offered him, so Willem II bought him with a year left on his Sunderland contract. He mentioned that he wanted to go to the Netherlands because of his roots

McGlinchley could have played for Scotland, he played at the U20 World Cup in Canada for them

Smith true never would have got close to England

I think the point of whether players we "pinched" were likely to get a spot for their respective NTs is irrelevant.  The fact that they were eligible for other countries (and sometimes near the wider squad or represented their country at youth level) means we did what the Netherlands may well do with Would.

At the end of the day, how many times have we said "cap him just in case"? So nothing wrong if the Dutch decide to do the same.

The reality is that apart from a few stand outs, you never know how good someone's going to become, so if you think he's worth a punt, you should make him switch and ask questions later.

He'd be crazy not to enter the Dutch national team setup

360footballnews.com

Would he though? It's a HUGE call - I wouldn't want to be in his shoes.  Yes, he's in the Dutch top flight right now, but the competition there will be 100 times higher than here in NZ.  Should he not do well and end up playing in the second or third tier, he'd be out of the equation for them, and still in the mix for us (see Marinovic, amateur All Whites etc).

VUW AFC - Victoria University Football for life

With NZ especially with the extended WC comp he will have a far greater chance of playing on the biggest stage...same with the u20 WC. That being said, if he became the future number 1 for the Dutch, the amount of quality games would dwarf what we can offer, although that new league thats being discussed may minimise the disparity.

Sparta has tested Callum McCowatt from New Zealand. The 19-year-old right winger will try to enforce a contract with Sparta over the next three months...... On Tuesday-evening, McCowatt made his appearance in the shirt of Young Sparta for the first time in a practice match (0-0) against Sunday's first division Olympia from Gouda.

My reading of it is that even if FIFA approve his switching to play for the Netherlands, Woud won't be allowed to play for them in the FIFA u-20 World Cup Finals due to Article 8 b. of the Regulations Governing the Applications of Statutes, FIFA Statutes:

"b) He is not permitted to play for his new association in any competition in which he has already played for his previous association."

Woud played for NZ at the u-20 World Cup last year, so he won't be able to represent Holland at the same event.

He may be able to play in friendlies and UEFA u-19 qualifiers though.

Fudge, hope this isn't some sort of sliding doors type moment for him.

Not a trial, but a training option for three months I thought. If he can still get his 3 months afterwards, why not?

He seems alright. 22 year old goalkeeper, played last season in the U21 Eredivisie (where the top scorer is our friend Jizz Hornkamp) making 2 appearances. Now plays for SP Tharros, though they're in the Italian seventh division so he's got a way to go before his All Whites dream comes to fruition

Especially considering we're quite well stocked in the goalkeeping department

Younger brother of Ben V.D Broek - The man who made his debut under Hudson in 2015 against South Korea.

There's a bit of debate whether B V.D. Broek is actually eligible - Could apply to Phil too.

Well there should be no debate. Their mum gained NZ citizenship (she even served in the NZ army) before both of them were born. Under NZ citizenship law, they are both NZ citizens at birth. So even though they've never lived in NZ or have parents/grandparents born in NZ they're eligible.

ie they don't have to satisfy Article 7 as they don't need to acquire NZ nationality - they have always been NZers from birth.

Not starting an argument at all, I just heard what he told NZF was un-true, but to be honest I don't know, I just remember reading somewhere on it.
