Interesting opinion piece by Gordon Irving in the Sunday Star Times. Under the above heading he looks at the whole debate of the Phoenix giving in to the Asian Football Confederation demands that the Phoenix become a fully Australian club and thus NZ players would be only allowed under the three foreigners rule.
This is a huge debate that I've tried to touch on a number of times, that now seems to have bubbled to the surface.
Irving asks: "Why not let the AFC do what it wants? It's not as though the Phoenix are overflowing with an abundance of kiwi talent anyway. This Phoenix team has made the second round of the A League playoffs thanks largely to imports - McKain, Reddy, Durante and Ifill."
"Costa Barbarouses got so fed up with lack of opportunity he has thrown in his lot with Brisbane."
There are only three kiwi players who are now Phoenix regulars - Brown, Lochead and Bertos. Ben Sigmund is second fiddle to McKain and even Mark Paston will struggle to get back in ahead of Reddy, provided he stays.
Irving suggests that the Phownix leadership is already contemplating the Phoenix becoming a fully Australian team so they can qualify for the Asian Champions League. "Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata is reported as saying: If we quality for the 2011 Asian Champions League I would have no problem following their three foreigners rule' because we would adjust to that."
Perhaps the Phoenix have already signalled they can meet that 'three foreigners (NZ)' criteria and the future does lie with being a fully registered Australian team and competing in the ACL.
Very interesting indeed.
