It's possible this, and reflects the joint Aust/Indonesia agreement signed recently, and discussed on this website.

Australia's WC bid rival teetering
9 February 2010 | 12:16 - SBS: Matthew Hall

Indonesias bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup appears close to collapse with the countrys government appearing unlikely to back the proposal.

However, Indonesian football authorities have publicly signalled they would consider a joint bid with Australia if they can still obtain government support from Jakarta for such a proposal.

The latest twist in bidding for 2018 and 2022 World Cups comes as FIFAs deadline for bids to guarantee government support is set to pass.

Indonesian football authorities admitted its government had yet to write an official letter backing the bid.

The Jakarta government believes the Indonesian Football Association should focus on grassroots development before considering an ambitious World Cup bid.

Without backing from the government, Indonesia will be disqualified from the bidding process, Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) deputy secretary general Dali Tahir told The Jakarta Post.

If we dont take the opportunity now, well have to wait for another 20 years.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and minister of youth and sport Andi Alifian Mallarangeng are the key figures to make this bid happen. We plead to them.

Its not just a PSSI event its a big event for Indonesians.

Indonesias minister for sport appeared to slam shut the bids coffin, claiming that hosting a World Cup should be lower on the PSSIs list of priorities.

The PSSI must put the focus on revitalising football development in the country, not anything else, Minister Andi Alifian Mallarangeng told the paper.

We have to pull ourselves to the top of the Southeast Asian region again, then well have to be one of Asias best. After that, we can talk about the World Cup.

While its own bid appears to be going nowhere, Indonesian football authorities claimed a joint bid with Australia was still a possibility but that support from Jakarta was still required.

Dali Tahir, PSSI deputy general secretary who has served on FIFAs Ethics Committee, also claimed the world governing body was poised to award Asia hosting rights for 2022, which would be a significant fillip for Australia's campaign.

FIFA has confirmed the 2022 World Cup will be held in Asia, Dali Tahir said, although FIFA has not confirmed that claim.

Australia and Indonesia have a chance but Australia doesnt want to face us head-to-head. They prefer to have us as a strategic ally.

"But without the guarantee letter [from the government], its impossible to join forces with Australia.

Hell no. Holding a World Cup in a Muslim country

Three for me, and two for them.

Dunno about it being a Muslim country, but Oz and Indonesia?  (Indo is not the most stable/safest place to hold a major sporting event)

Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Way way too unstable.

Sorry, I meant there are other Muslim counties that would be OK to host a WC - they're not all hotbeds of terrorism.

Yeah, the above comment suggests prejudice against Muslims.

Buffon, your comments are extremely ignorant. There is no law in the world that says Muslim = unstable. Many Muslim countries are far more stable than South Africa for example!

Or maybe you think FIFA should make a list of religions that it deems acceptable?

Bahrain - Too small.

Egypt - Contentious to say the least. Too close to Algeria, Sudan, Libya and Israel for my liking.

Well Algeria is about a million miles away (probably close to France than Egypt), and being close to those other countries hasn't got anything to do with hosting the World Cup. Should Zimbabwe and North Korea should have stopped their neighbours from hosting the World Cup in your opinion?

Anyway, I think with the Bahrain example you really have to concede that there are Muslim countries that are stable enough to hold the World Cup (even if too small).

That has little to do with religion though.

This is my point. You are being extremely prejudice against the Muslim religion.

I think some of the posts here are missing the point, Indonesia is Australia's closest AFC neighbour. For years Australia has been trying to build its relations with Indonesia, looks like the world game has finally opened that door.

Don't think that the Australian Government won't be salivating at this thought.

The point is that there may not be a Muslim country right now that is ideal for holding a World Cup for a variety of reasons. It's prejudice of the worst kind to say that they are unfit to hold a World Cup because they are lots of Muslims. Haha, I really want Indonesia to hold it now!

The WC should obviously not be in any islamic countries. They are far too unstable with all that mad muslim terrorism.

I only want to see WC games played in safe cities like NY, London, Madrid, Paris, Tokyo, Munich, Glasgow, Moscow, etc, etc...

Such as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, - maybe even a confederation of gulf states (UAE, Bahrain) and Egypt as has been mentioned.

I still fail to see why being a Muslim country means it is unsuitable to host a WC.

Diego's Son - of course a joint Oz-Indo WC would be a great bridge building exercise between the two neighbours (given that there is much to build and get over).

How easy would it be for Jemaah Islamiyah to make a statement that would make Bali look like small fry if the WC was staged there (not in Bali I mean)?
