The phoenix should sign Swedish International Niclas Alexandersson hes played over 260 games for swedish club sides as well as over 100 games in the english premiership and for  the national team he has made 97 appearances. Alexandersson is good techinically and when called upon can score goals although he is 36 he is much better quality than other older players that are going around.

Got to be better than Sean Devine....still begs the question on the age thing....I'm not sure. My club Norwich City picked up Dion Dublin on  a free and it looks likely he will be signed for next season and he's 36 too, so maybe you have a point.
Dublin plays in defence or up front and has scored half a dozen goals for the Canaries this season. He's also got a professional attitude and he keeps himself fit, looks after his body, isn't fiery and younger players would benefit from his knowledge and they way he carries himself.
Sean Devin had none of that....so it is a matter of finding the right persion with the right attitude and abilities. And if you can get this player all well and good.

There are some good older players kicking around who would be worth a look for the Phoenix. Edgar Davids, Henrik Larsson or even Jay Jay Okocha

Yep there is but you have also got to be realistic. We can band around all sorts of names but it will boil down to the fact that they can still command wages that will kill the salary cap.
That is why it is better to find a good player from Africa, South America etc who is hungry for it.
For many of these players it's a way to a better life, whereas these Europeans have it far too easy for too long, training a couple of hours a day, golf, magazine shoots etc. They have a lifestyle. A good Mexican, Brasilian or Argentinian that has the skills and is hungry to make a name and make it to the bigtime might be the better option. And cheaper.
Get a goodun and we'll be happy as, and so will the new owner as he won't have to hit max limits on salaries. It's fun making these nominations but soon the reality will have to take hold and I think we will end up with a side that won't be immediate championship material.

See your point - what would you say to someone like a Dion Dublin - a tier or so down from what was previously mentioned? Even Gary Speed or someone.

I'm sure if they picked up the right player, but the track record of the Kingz and the Knights import signings leave a lot to be desired. Who on earth recommended Devine to the Knights should be shot. Better vetting of players needs to be done for sure. Gary Speed is a sensible suggestion too by the way. Sometimes it's all about who you know and contacts too. Wellington offers an interesting lifestyle and I'm sure a package that isn't as financial as some of these players expect can be made up with other things such as accomodation, car etc. I don't know how these things affect the wage salary - ie if they have to be declared as part of the players overall salary.
One thing for sure, I'm sick and tired of under-performing English players.

Doesn't Gary Speed currently play for Bolton?  No offence to the Phoenix, but what is he going to want to do with us.

He'll be playing  in Europe next year.

He might be a family guy who is thinking about his future. If he has kids then I think you will find that Wellington is a better place to bring up kids than Bolton.
No disrespect to Bolton but the last time I visited the place following Norwich City...and yeah we are taking the early 90's when I was on my OE -  the place wasn't exactly endearing.
Bolton won't do a thing in Europe, they are just not good enough.

I still doubt that a current EPL player, who is in the starting line up most of time, would want to come to a new franchise in the A League - family man or not.

I'm sure we couldn't compete in terms of wages.

If he's marquee the money might not be such a problem - plus the lifestyle change would be a factor.

We're more likely to get some guy who played 1 game for Crystal Palace five years ago and who has since starred for Accrington Stanley.

Lets be realistic, Speed playin week in week out for Bolton would not want to play down here...

Niclas Alexandersson is well past his best but would do a job.. to be honest i thought Gemmill would have impressed more than he did last season.

Why are all these players ex everton haha

On a serious note i know it another everton player but Duncan Ferguson's name was thrown around late last season by Perth i think he would be a good marquee player and give someone to aim at and hold the ball up, although i believe he may be past it too - but possibly good enough for A League. Who knows but looking forward to new season

Gemmil? He was playing for Oxford, what did you expect?

He looked better playing with Salley because of the speed factor - thought he played ok - always showed and gave the player on the ball an option.

Sorry, but I can't resist posting the old Duncan Ferguson joke:

The manager walks into the Everton dressing room before the match, but just as he is about to start his team talk he notices that there's a freshly laid turd sitting right in the middle of the dressing room.

"All right," shouts the manager "who's sh*t on the floor?"

"Me boss," says Duncan "but i'm really good in the air!"

I'll get me coat...

The way things are going for James Beattie, we might be able to pick him up on the cheap

a lot of the names being thrown around to be the phoenix marquee player are from the english prem i suggest that the scouting staff at the phoenix look into the german spanish belgian french italian dutch and russian leagues b4 signing someone of lesser quality from the english prem

Your probably right in saying they could pick up someone with a bit better quality in the Euro-League's.

I do think that a name from the English League may draw more  of a crowd, at least in the short term.

why pick up all these older players who are past it and not playing regular footy. i hear larrson. he wont come, after brilliant years with celtic and 2 years at barca and 6 months at united he wont come, hes staying in sweden for his family, would be a good signing tho - very unrealistic. duncan fergerson wont come either. more money playing for a lower leage side in eng or scotland. they shud try pick players up from clubs like aberdeen in scotland or hearts, or even look local, stuart kelly or brett fisher are quality - look local not abroad. thats what happened at the knights and the kingz, i didnt see the kingz tho cuz i just moved to nz 2 years ago.

look at youngesters too. send a few scouts to club games at grassroots at under 16s- under 18s might be a long shot but after a while you;ll see a player who lifts your heart, and then give him a trial.

but if larrson came, then id be flying to wellington each week from chch, becuz hes a leegnd and im a celtic fan :D

Alexandersson was one of the softest players ever to pull on a royal blue jersey. He once took himself off the ground due to having sore fingers,FFS!

Believe me when I say, you lot can do without him...
