Sorry if there is already a thread for this...

Anyone going to watch the Pan Pacific Tournament starting in Honolulu tomorrow?

Could be fun...could be dumb. Still, looks like the Galaxy are sending a pretty aggressive team.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Charles Alamo, Steve Cronin, Josh Wicks
DEFENDERS (10): Celestine Babayaro, Sean Franklin, Michael Gavin, Ante Jazic, Brandon McDonald, Mike Randolph, Troy Roberts, Julian Valentin, Greg Vanney, Abel Xavier.
MIDFIELDERS (8): Ely Allen, Alvaro, David Beckham, Kelly Gray, Kevin Harmse, Chris Klein, Josh Tudela, Peter Vagenas
FORWARDS (6): Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan, Alan Gordon, Bryan Jordan, Carlos Ruiz, Israel Sesay

I understand the Japanese team Gamba Osaka has several players out with injuries. I hope the G's get a rematch with Sydney FC. That last 5-3 game was great fun, just ended with the wrong winner. Also playing is the reigning MLS champ Houston Dynamo.

Link to TV coverage, though the game is broadcast on ESPN Classic here in the States.Sec1382008-02-20 17:35:47

Sorry if this has been asked already, but who is playing in this tournament?

Sydney FC (A-League)
Houston Dynamo (MLS)
LA Galaxy (MLS)
Gamba Osaka (J-League)

Future tournaments are rumored to include a Mexican team and a Korean K-League team. Also, future team participants are supposed to be the League Champions, though the timing isn't right for A-League for sure.

Maybe next year they'll play it a little later in the year.

Surprised you hadn't heard of it...it seems like all the diehard followers of MLS, J-League and A-League have been talking smack like this tournament will finally decides whose wang is bigger.

Still, it should be fun!

You'll have to excuse KP.  If Melbourne were there it would be the bestest tournament ever, but because it's Sydney... it's not.

Ha!  Totally understand.  Galaxy won F*** all, yet there they are.  I know because the cashcow is on the team it's a good idea to include them, but still...

I hope this becomes a legit tournament someday.

Walt disney presents:
the lineup for the LA Galaxy vs Gamba Osaka.

Both teams are missing more than half a dozen starters.

Osaka has a bunch of guys with the Sr National team and the U23 National team out.

The Galaxy have
"...ten players who will not dress for tonight's contest.
The ten are Charles Alamo, Ante Jazic, Landon Donovan, Kevin "let me step on you" Harmse, Abel Xavier, Pete Vagenas, Celestine Babayaro, Carlos "Fish" Ruiz, Alan Gordon and Mike Randolph."

This is at least 5 starters and a couple guys who are expected to challenge for starting spots this season.

This went from 'could be interesting' to "oh well, there is nothing else soccer related on, so...might as well watch it".

Hey KP, if you hate Sydney, you'll like what's happening in their game...
3-0 to Houston at the half. SFC aren't playing badly, they are just getting their asses kicked. Houston looks the part of a League Champ.

Meanwhile the Galaxy looked like they were sponsored by Walt Disney:
3' goal from the Brazilian striker Bare on Gamba was the only scoring. Galaxy looked painfully amateurish with their second string out there.
Definitely, I can conclude that the Japanese 2nd string are better than the MLS 2nd string.

Talk on fourfourtwo about the Pan Pacs moving to Australia for 2009, sure just a bunch of talk at this stage, but I reckon it would go off in Australia - packed stadiums and the possibilty of the Nix participating would increase interest in NZ two fold. We could play our fixtures at home too.

Ultimately the Pan Pacs are aiming for something like this:
- A-League Champions
- MLS Champions
- K-League Champions
- J-League Champions
- Mexican Champions
- Wellington Phoenix (we look out of place haha)

Yes you are right, because they have Beckham they can enter what ever tournament they please! I guess we will see about Phoenix... everything is up in the air i.e. O-League etc.
