Hi all,

Wonder what our politicians plan to do for football's benefit, given it's an election year?

Suggest we all take note of the below (published in today's The Australian) and get on the case of each of the candidates in our respective electorates, prompting a commitment out of their parties to invest in football.

Cheers,

JR

Soccer nets $16m from the Rudd Government's Federal budget
by Ray Gatt and Nicole Jeffery | May 15, 2008

SOCCER was the big winner in the Rudd Government's Federal Budget with the sport to receive $16million in funding over the next two years.

The funding honours a promise made by the previous Howard Government which announced last September it would provide the extra money on top of the $16m the code already receives from an existing four-year agreement.

The money will be used to help kick-start the Women's National League, promote "participation in and support for football in Australia" and to help funding of Australia's national men's and women's teams from juniors to seniors.

The sports facilities that will be redeveloped include the Cricket Centre of Excellence in Brisbane ($17.5m), Campbelltown Stadium ($8m), Newcastle's EnergyAustralia Stadium ($10m), Penrith Football Stadium and the adjoining Howell Cricket Oval ($5m), the Bradman Museum at Bowral ($6.5m) and Punt Road Oval in Melbourne ($2m).

yeh had this out in a thread when Andy Cole's potential signing wasn't something to talk about...wrote emails to the minister pointing out what a crap job we were doing compared to Aussie..got referred to SPARC twice...

But being honest the admin over the ditch seems like a better investment than our one where nobody seems to want to stay in the job...hardly an encouragement to sink money in...

football would have to be a better option than some of the things the govt has spent money on - not least that junket to Europe for retiring MPs!

I reckon the trick would be to ask them 'live' at the public meetings - i reckon they would struggle to respond as it won't be a topic that their minders would have coached them on

can't see it helping necessarily, but it would be a laugh

going in with some figures about sports funding in relation to player numbers might embarrass them

and we still owe Peters

So are Phil Goff (uncle of Football Ferns star Simone Carmichael) and Ross Robertson (long involvement in women's soccer - he was Auckland team manager in the 1980s).

as for Peters check out this link http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA0805/S00277.htm
racing is getting a $9 million a year subsidy...

this is super lame compared to the arsing around that football is getting...and compared to the foresited investment in Aussie...

can't really be bothered writing the sports minister again but yeh...lame lame lame...

that's pretty much what i was getting at gings

-----------

JR - So, if Goff does become labour's next leader and if labour get back in while he's still top dog, then having a pro-football PM might lead to some benefits for the game (a few spoken and unspoken assumptions there!)

Buggered if I know, young man. I deal in facts, not assumptions and supposition.

Send him an email asking the same question, and let us know his reply.

well maybe we should try writing him now

he's a) just signed a free trade deal with China
(With the nix having a popular Chinese player and all...)
       b) number 3 behind Cullen and Clark
       c) lives in Wellington for his work when not galavanting the world so can probably smell the      Fever
       d) doesn't seem to always have the greatest respect for Uncle Winston...
        e) doesn't seem to be a Cantabrian rugby head like Cosgrove...

I wonder if they'll come down to the Ring of Fire to try and grab a few votes? I reckon a few healthy "Who are ya?" might be in store for any of them that show their nose after the Fiji fiasco.

Just what did that achieve in the end?? Nothing politically! The loss of some money seriously needed by NZ football.
