Just sent this letter to RadioSport:

I notice in the Dominion Post that a New Zealand team is participating next week in the fifth largest sporting tournament in the world. While the figure 5th biggest may be subject to discussion it goes without saying this is a major world sporting event, and I would argue, far eclipses the popularity of the Americas Cup and the Tri-nations and perhaps even rivals the Rugby World Cup.

Yet how much coverage are we exposed to of this event here in New Zealand? Is it even being broadcast on television? And is there a rational reason why coverage of this event pales in comparison to those mentioned above?

The Junior Wold Cup football is a massive global sporting event, and one in which New Zealanders should be proud to be represented. Unfortunately, most probably dont even know that it is happening. For this, our media must surely accept some of the responsibility.

While most of the media seems to have its eyes squarely fixed on Paris Hiltons latest outburst (or the corporate games in Valencia) perhaps Radio Sport can take the sporting lead. Id certainly welcome regular updates on how the last few days of preparation are going, and perhaps secure some interviews with key personalities both here in New Zealand and abroad, so that those of us without media credentials can benefit from the research of those that do. After all, selling real news is the journalists job.

Nup, just to the studio. I was hoping it'd get read on-air, but Darcy is bleating on about the Rugger at the moment. . . .  . . . . Maybe I need to address it to Darcy himself. . .

Good letter, but lets face it, the media is preoccupied with people who succeed in obscure sports, only in NZ would people care about triatheletes, rowers and sailors. Even though the U-20 world cup is a huge event, the fact that New Zealand don't have much hope of winning means they are never likely to recieve much media coverage.
