Nice vid from Fox shows the increase in crowds and ratings...

Another interesting point about our league...…. is ranked 20 in the World!

A survey by World Soccer magazine gave each country’s league points based on criteria, including:
* attendances
* finances
* goals scored
* competitiveness
* successful managers
* star players
* stadiums.

Top of the charts was Germany’s Bundesliga, ahead of England’s Premier League, then Spain’s La Liga & Italy’s Serie A.

Given our Fox ratings was 80 K ... interesting to look at the AFL ... ratings over 2012 and 2013 to date ... at this stage it shows the AFL are up on last season but so does ours ... what screams out in these figures for me is given the media and massive marketing push the AFL Fox average is just over twice of Football... and the despite tens of millions arguably hundreds of millions and favours pulled from left right and centre and again with massive media the AFL rating on Sydney FTA are very low...

Will be interesting to watch how the Socceroos rate on Tuesday night almost no media in Sydney its all about RL and especially the State of Origin...

From a poster on 442 called Joe Dovala ..

2013

AFL

Foxtel: 197k

FTA Tv (only for matches shown nationally): 679k

(SYD:30, MEL:406, BRI:36, ADE:107, PTH:100)

FTA 5 city market share: SYD:4%, MEL:60%, BRI:5%, ADE:16%, PER:15%)

As you can see, on FTA TV AFL is only viewed in MEL, ADE & PER

2012

AFL:

Foxtel: 181k

FTA Tv: 689k

(SYD:34, MEL:398, BRI:38, ADE:109, PER:114)

FTA 5 city market share: SYD:5%, MEL:57%, BRI:5%, ADE:16%, PER:17%

Another interesting ratings was this highlighted again by Joe .. re the Sydney ratings and GWS rating on Fox...

Just updated my AFL ratings spreadsheet...

LIVE: AFL GWS V WEST COAST FOX SPORTS 3 58,000

This is similar to the lowest FoxSports ratings for A-League. Of course, FoxSports is currently paying AFL 3x the money they pay for A-League.

And, on FTA TV only 23k watched the match in SYD - the sort of figures W-League achieves on ABCTv.

One should never forget this article as well re Iron Chef on SBS and AFL Sydney ratings... http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/iron-chef-takes-a-slice-out-of-the-swans-again-20100415-shkr.html

Australia V Jordon

SBS recorded an average national audience of 1,034,000 (761,000 metro and 273,000 regional) for the match with a metro free-to-air audience share of 16 per cent.

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1155809/More-than-1-million-watch-Socceroos-on-SBS

Fox still be added in [guess 300k]… one million for a game on one hour delay that received little media …. that's reasonably impressive…

Also has enough folk knowing the channel to find the A-League broadcast on…

Capital City only VIC & SA on 7Mate... Mel: 128,  Ade: 50

Total 735K regional ratings to be added with NSW QLD & WA on 7, and VIC & SA & TAS on 7Mate

Meaning a pre season trial match beat the best cricket and AFL has to offer... interesting ..

My guess another 300K ...

To be honest if I was Thundersticks I probably would be focusing on marketing the second home game in December, given the length between the first and the second.

Still got Fox to add...

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1170099/A-League-delivers-record-ratings-for-SBS-2

A-League delivers record ratings for SBS 2

SBS 2 recorded its highest audience of the year when the Hyundai A-League made its free-to-air TV debut on Friday night with the live match between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets.2013-2014 Hyundai A-League on SBS

SBS recorded an average combined metro and regional audience of 243,000 (166,000 metro and 77,000 regional) for the opening round match.

The match delivered SBS 2 a 493% increase for the 7:30pm – 9:30pm Friday night timeslot (previously 33,000 metro and 8,000 regional) since the channel relaunched in April this year.

The match was also the highest rating sport broadcast for SBS 2 on record.

In total, 495,000 viewers tuned in to SBS’s coverage of the match based on five minute consecutive reach viewing.

In Sydney, the match attracted an impressive 8.3% free-to-air share and in Southern NSW 10.8%.

"Last night was an important night for football and for SBS and I’m thrilled to see such strong figures for the first Hyundai A-League match on SBS 2," SBS Head of Sport Ken Shipp said.

"Free-to-air TV coverage of the A-League is vital for the growth of football in Australia and I look forward to continuing to bring fans a live game every Friday night."

The match between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets will be repeated Saturday at 4:00pm on SBS 2 and 10am Sunday 13 October on NITV.

The A-League Highlights show is on Monday from 8.40pm on SBS 2 for a round-up of all five matches in Week 1.

Adelaide United takes on Melbourne Victory next Friday 18 October LIVE from 7:00pm AEDT on SBS 2, SBS Radio 3 and streamed online here at The World Game.

Side note ... a poster on 442 broke down the ratings down per night ...

Friday Night 107,250
Saturdays 94,375
Sundays 68,429

If we add Monday night of 69K…. Also the late Saturday match gets a bigger number than the early kick off…

Says to me Friday night matches should be scheduled in Perth and Wellington on alternative weekends to use the time difference to our advantage … i.e. two Friday night matches and only one Sunday match…

Sunday crowds are also down compared to Friday night...

A reliable poster on 442 called Justafan has posted the SBS rating numbers are mixed and no one can get the actual numbers as SBS Ch 2 & HD are split and most of the published ratings are for for SBS Ch 2 with HD not counted he said he has emailed SBS and is awaiting a reply .. me thinks they are not going to reply to a man in the street so to speak who sends them in an email...

However we can compare what we have ... AFL 22013 season and A-League 4 rounds ... tis interesting and does add weight to claims by many of obvious bias in the TV rating collection methods and the missing SBS HD figures .. FFA would have actuals for the next media deal but it kinda keeps folk like us somewhat in the dark... I would love SBS like they did after Rd 1 and publish the ratings..

What we do know to date .. just using Friday night ..

Fox Rating Friday Night AFL (2013 year) - 269k, A-League (4 rounds 2014) - 107k (A-League approx 40% of AFL ratngs on Fox)

Metro FTA - AFL average - 689k last year, A-League (4 rounds 2014) - 152k (A-League approx. 22% of AFL ratings)

AFL averaged 958k for Friday FTA Metro + Fox. A-League is approx. 27% of AFL ratings at present.

It seems strange that the AFL FTA ratings are 2.6 times the Fox ratings and yet Football is .42 times bigger...

Hopefully SBS will respond to Justafan's email ... but on a percentage basic they are reasonable numbers for this early...

BTW anyone got the NZ ratings ... is there a twitter or something over there that gives the ratings...

Interesting article from Bozza ...

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/bosnich--a-league-on-the-rise-not-dwindling/82526

Mark Bosnich says television ratings that reveal the A-League is languishing behind rival sports this summer do not tell the full story.

Sports commentator Gerard Whateley penned a column in the Herald-Sun that derided Football Federation Australia chief David Gallop's pre-Christmas statement that the A-League was an unstoppable force.

The fledgling Big Bash League went on to draw mostly larger crowds and completely dominated the television ratings across the holiday period.

For example, a marquee A-League fixture when Melbourne Victory hosted Western Sydney Wanderers attracted 109,000 viewers while a seemingly routine cricket encounter between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers topped 750,000.

A-League is televised free to air on SBS 2, but only Friday night matches, the rest are on subscription TV.

The highest rating A-League game last weekend had 83,000 tuning into free to air TV and 94,000 on pay TV. That's dwarfed by the Ashes (1,550,000), Big Bash League (681,000) and the Brisbane International the (260,000).

But former Socceroo and Fox Sports television commentator Bosnich told SEN those statistics were misleading.

"Statistics are a bit like bikinis – they show you are a lot but not everything," he said.

"The general nature of what he wrote was wrong.

"You can't use statistics in terms of comparing us to the Big Bash. Remember only 30 per cent of the population have pay TV and 100 per cent have free to air.

"Our viewing figures at Fox Sports are up with the corresponding time last year by six per cent. The crowd figures are up on the corresponding round last year and 12 per cent overall," Bosnich said.

Bosnich acknowledged rival codes had enjoyed more significant spikes in popularity.

"We have got a lot of work to do to get our sport up as high as it possibly can be," he said.

"AFL and rugby league in the winter are two juggernaut sports that we actually look up to and cricket has had an absolute golden summer and the performance against England has inspired a nation - we realise that.

"But when I saw the article I just thought it was wrong. To compare it to Big Bash on free-to-air is just unfair. Our figures are up."

Bosnich did not believe recent crowd violence had hurt the A-League's popularity.

"Other sports have their problems as well. For example, we had the problem in AFL with the drugs thing with Essendon. No-one alleges ever that it is the same problem at all the clubs…."

"It perturbs me when people try to paint the A-League as down when the game is growing and it has done every year," he said.

Bosnich said extra police at A-League matches was the best way to stamp out violence and the lighting of flares.

"Flares are wrong and it is a problem and we have to eradicate them from the game. Unfortunately some people think it is cool to bring them to the game. They have to make sure they pat people down before they go in."

"All it takes is for some to get seriously hurt or worse and that's going to be real problems for the game."

Best way to get Kiwi ratings is to visit Throng.co.nz the day after the game.

18,000 for the Adelaide game last week, via here: http://www.throng.co.nz/2014/02/tv-ratings-1-february-2014/
