Does anyone else find the lip-smacking relish with which Harris writes "a game played by men" a bit eyebrow-raising?

I find the cheats in rugby play to the brink, as do the soccer cheats.

Wondering if there are less dives now than before since it is an offence. Also I like that a man has to leave the field for an "injury" and only gets back on when the ref waves him on.  hepatitis2011-12-04 16:55:41

i find it very strange for a so-called football writer to bring up a school yard taunt that soccer players used to get (and probably still do). Nice one Harris

How is football in this country meant to progress when idiots like Harris get to write football columns in national newspapers?

Probably a sense of irony that of all the people that played football, he would be the least manly. I always go back to the tried and true testimony. What has Billy Harris ever done that counted? It just strikes of bitterness that as a person involved in football, he sits back and takes potshots because now he is an after thought. Kinda like the kid that was always the last pick and now wants to get his own back.

Quite a lot actually if you take a look - but that doesnt make him a good columnist

He played some games for the All Whites.... wow. A few players have done that but would list them as also rans... Adrian Webster, Jeff Flemying..

The point I'm trying to make is that he seems if he really thinks he is something, then why is he not trying to make a difference in football and be part of the 'solution'? I never hear Billy offer positivity or a solution so how is he helping? Being a former All White, you think he would know better but... In the conversations I and a few others have had with him, he has always been smarmy to the point that he is a football god and everyone else is sh*t. It comes through in his writings. So he coached Papatoetoe... whoopee.....

My dad saved one of his penalties in an early 90s Northern League game (or might have been Chatham Cup, can't remember what he said). Apparently he got into a strop and refused to shake anyones hand after the match because his side lost.

Three for me, and two for them.

Today he refers to Jacob Burns in the same sentence as Broich and Hernandez and I don't mean like "Herandez and Broich are midfield quality while Burns is a sh*tc**t".

I'm still ARFing.

The closest thing to Broich at the Glory is Andrezinho, but even he wouldn't deserve to be in the same sentence as Broich and Hernandez

By reputation I think Miller is, but hasn't had much impact yet. Adrezinho is very lightweight and easily pushed out of a game.

Either way, Billy is horribly wrong. We have the same amount of attacking talent as the Glory have, if not more. Smeltz and Ifill cancel each other out, and we have scored one more goal than Perth this season.

disagree, miller brings much more creativity to perth's midfield than ours.

also, perth played one up today and were without travis dodd

we only have ifill.reg222011-12-11 11:37:57

Yes. Until I read that I used to think that this thread was a bit harsh. I really don't think we are doing that bad.

I mean Adelaide have Sergio van dyke and Djite and yes Hernadez et al at the Victory- how is that working out for them?

Quality or rep doesn't necessarily mean results. We just got one, so stfu I think.

Also I know it is the fashion to knock Leo, Pav, Daniel, Lochy, Ward and Brown, but in various combinations with Ifill, Manny, Sanchez and Greenacre we have created good chances on attack. Sure not all the time, but. The table is very tight and the teams which blink the least, make the fewest mistakes will make it to the finals I think.

Sure definitely missing someone who can consistently lash home shots from distance a la Broich, Hernandez or James Brown, but we're not doing too bad, if we really start comparing. And Daniel and Sanchez have been not that bad from free kicks this year, unlucky twice.

Ifill is equal to both Hernandez and Broich in my eyes when fully fit. I think Carle has actually been a slight step above this season.

I would like to register my disgust (Kewell lol) at the lack of any decent mention of Phoenix in this weeks Sunday Star Times. From what I could tell football was given less coverage than both the Super Bowl (who the f**k watches that!) and the warriors pre-season game.

The only mention of the Phoenix was a brief blurb within Harrises article about who-cares.

What is going on? 4 wins on the trot, a club record 3 away wins a row and 2nd place isn't worth a decent mention or even a picture in one of the biggest national newspapers?! What do we have to do get an article?!
Really pisses me off.
And if we get accused of playing boring football again, My god!
Can someone please tell me what on earth constitutes really entertaining football? Is it long range strikes, lots of goals, pretty passing with no end result? Seriously what do the 'Nix have to do to lose this boring football criticism?

Memo from Billy Harris....

Hi Yellow fever

You would not believe the angst I had to go through as I prepared to write last weekends Sunday Star times football article. Normally its easy. I just slag off the Wellington Phoenix. You know how it goes....can't win away from home, old slow players, boring tactics, crap coach small crowds. Bit what has gone wrong? they are SECOND in the league, they have won three on the trot AWAY from home, they are on a record winning streak, they are scoring some great goals and  they are hauling in huge home crowds.

What was I to do? So I decided to write a piece about football politics in junior Auckland football. I know its a liteweight boring article and no one is the slightest bit interested in the topic but I just couldn't bring myself to say anything positive about the Nix. Hopefully they will lose next week against the Roar in front of a small crowd and then I can slag them off for being unable to beat the top sides in the A-League.

yours
Billy Harris

This

Silly Billy can't write anything positive about the Phoenix because he is on record as saying that the Phoenix are sh*thouse. What does writing something positive do to Silly Billy's 'credibility'? It just makes him look foolish to write something positive so he wont. Plus its actually not in Silly Billy's DNA to be positive. A loss next weekend will see Silly Billy reappear.

One thing you need to realize is the game was played on Friday. Meaning all Fairfax/APN papers would have covered the Phoenix result on a Saturday. Sunday Star Times wouldn't have put a match review ..potentially only an opinion column.

Fair enough....but we were not expecting a match report. Just a "gosh aren't the nix doing well" article. After all Harris is a football writer producing articles for a NZ football column in a NZ newspaper. So what are the hot local football items at the moment? The Nix's red hot form and Nelsen to Spurs. Both good news stories that he chose to ignore.

Harris is a lightweight...time he moved on

A Game finishing at midnight on Friday Night / Sat Morning is a difficult for Papers to cover... a little late for any major coverage in the Sat Morning Papers and old news for the Sunday papers.

You could also argue when we were losing it would have been "old news" for him to cover it in his columns.  The guys a knob and personally I hope he never has a reason to write about the nix again.
