For those who were fans of his previous "we should throw the qualifier against Bahrain because we'd be murderized in the World Cup", here's his newest effort: "the friendly against Mexico will ruin NZ football altogether".

Don't worry, he's not anti-football, if you've seen his rugby articles he just seems to be the most negative person alive. Seems to be a sports journalist who hates sport.

Actually his previous one about the nix wasn't too bad as i recall.

Love the little barb from Richie in the dompost about ex-players bagging him for holding two coaching positions.

It's not a bad article all up, but he's got to try and stir something up. Oh no if we let them play games they'll...oh no...

the way I look at it is this is bonus territory and theyrel all professional footballers and this is what they live for...

the scheduling of the mexico match is one to be desired.
I can the point of having the squad assemble for the coach to run his eye over the players.
But Chris Rattue has a point. A multi goal thrashing by Mexico will not serve any benefit to the mentality of the players, confidence of the players, and filter down into club level.
It is also important to note that Mexico have never beaten New Zealand at international level, so we may play above ourselves and take the crowd out of the equation thus presenting ourselves with a possible chance of a result.

I was going to leave a comment after the article, but it requires signing up, which I am not going to do for that third rate publication.

I have not read the article, but this guy just says what he thinks people think.
I had a go at him at the last World Cup and his comment was that England were crap and everyone else was wonderful.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Not far off tbh.

Third rate publications always require sign ups... I hate that.

Whoever forced him to watch the All Whites v Mexico own up! Seems he found it a frustrating experience, in future if he doesn't want to watch football just let him be!

I did just to see if you would reply.

Disapointing article really.  Still trying to blame LA for the loss.
And his words about fixing on field injustifies lack any real insight.

The big problem with Rattue's harping on the LA thing is that it betrays an assumption that this is it for the Nix; this year was a fluke, the preliminary final is as good as it'll ever get, and next year and forever after we'll be a dismal tenth or eleventh. To coin a phrase, horse apples.

Gotta love the random digs into peoples mindset that football is sh*t. He doesnt say it,but he implies it. Why does he write about football? Is it because the herald want to get THAT message out there?

TV3 have it sorted, get a football man to write about football. Genius.

Mmmm. . . . the last I saw of Mexican football ruining us was that the Government gave us $300,000 for the World Cup build up. Not much of NZ Football being doomed at all.

"Success, or relative success, has tracked him around with the All Whites and Phoenix. And yet it is very hard to pinpoint his exact contribution, to determine the validity of his strategies.

Sheer luck, against Bahrain, helped the All Whites get to the World Cup in South Africa and good timing - in the form of a bunch of self-made professionals coming together - drove the crusade magnificently along.

Herbert's greatest fortune is being the national coach in the era of Ryan Nelsen, who took control of those history-making All Whites along with his old mate Simon Elliott."

Wow. Thats a well written bit of sporting analysis there. aitkenmike2012-02-20 13:39:26

Because, of course, no other NZ national coach ever had the privilege of being the national coach during the Nelsen/Elliott era.

Pure luck, that's what it is.

This is the only thing I think Rattface has got spot on.

"The Phoenix play third fiddle to the rugby and league football codes, and these two matches represented a royal chance to make headlines on the eve of the Super 15 and NRL seasons, catapult their confidence, and firm up a place near the top of the table.

Yet at the very point when the season required an emotional lift from the players, a show of energy, the Phoenix have let two leading A-league teams dictate terms."

Have to say I agree. I saw the Phoenix in a pre-season friendly against the Mariners and they were awful, not one shot on goal and couldn't even seem to put two passes together. I think that good run was a fluke, and what you are seeing now is the real phoenix. Frankly, the owners need to decide if they are just there to make up the numbers or whether they want to make a go of it. The phoenix are mediocrity personified. And much as I love Ricky Herbert basically its been five years of rubbish football and non-achievement.

I watched one PRESEASON game, therefore I can make an informed opinion on how the phoenix play.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

God I hate the 'Ryan coached the AWs' banter. Had an arguement with someone about it on the weekend.
On another note - if Ryan doesnt start fronting for game then the NZ public should be pretty pissed off at him.

I heard an All White from the 2010 squad say that it was Ryan and Simons team effectively.
