All inappropriate cultural appropriation arguments aside --- Do the Toffee's realise how god-damn cheesy the whole thing is?! What absolute F#*KING marketing genius came up with that?! Did Everton FC actually pay good money to some sh*te ad company for that cess pit of a campaign?! They could have used the cash and bought another player!

I really don't see what all the fuss is about, it would be no worse then us kiwis putting on some thing from South America or what ever.
AND unlike what the article says, there is ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNS that there has been any change to the lyrics.
I personally recon its good kudos, spreading a bit of kiwi culture in a part of the UK where rugby simply does not exits.

I'm sorry?? No change??

Doesn't sound like any haka I know. Do you mean no change in lyrics from the original Everton anthem?
I don't like seeing any haka, especially 'Ka Mate' (as that seems to be the most recognisable), being used and abused inappropriately. That includes the drunken hordes of young Kiwi backpackers in Europe.
Technically this performance hasn't appropriated any known haka. It's a made up one.
But the whole idea is extremely F'ing tacky! How is that a good way of spreading "kiwi" culture?

Rugby League is massive in the north west of England, so they all know a fair bit about kiwi culture.
As a side note, the NZ attitude to the haka is a f**king joke. It was a mickey mouse thing that no one bothered about (see early footage of the All Blacks doing it to see how no one cared about it) until Steinlager realised it was a massive marketing tool and pumped millions in to promote it. Now everyone is so sensitive about it. If we are going to be that bothered about it, for a start we can stop having aussies doing it (Brad Thorn, Brett Webb)
All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

This is the truthiest thing that has ever been spoken both on this forum and by Frankie Mac.
Everton haka is hilariously bad. But good marketing (we're talking about it).
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Leave haka where it belongs - on the marae and in other culturally appropriate settings. Everything else (including the All Black hakas) is just cringeworthy.

Twas very funny seeing Temuwera (Sp?) Morrison's eulogy to the 'Hairy Man' vis a vis Ka Mate, on C4 the other night.

The thing that annoys me is if this gets global attention it will be along the lines of various Iwi wanting to get paid for its use, like they tried to sue Lego for using Maori cultural references in its toys.
It makes us look greedy. You don't see Greek or Italians getting lawyered up every time their ancient cultural history is referenced, or the Japanese every time someone tries to rip off the samurai culture.
Fair enough for complaining about it if it is insensitive, but when they start putting their hands out asking for coin, its just not a good look.

It's cultural bastardisation - it's one thing referencing something, another ripping it off/stealing.
PS.
Of course you realise that Italians and Greeks want to have all their stuff back that had been 'taken' by the so-called archaelogists in the 19th century...

And the Maoris are doing the same. but thats tangible artifacts and quantifiable, what i don't agree is Maori putting a monetary value on their cultural identity as if to say, yes you do what you want with it, if you give us enough money. UberGunner2009-08-12 10:28:46PS.

Elgin...a place in Scotland, no?
I thought that was Sunderland...
But agree with EG - every culture borrows from other cultures (that's how societies develop and grow), but there is a qualitative/subjective difference between borrowing and ripping off/stealing.

Maori and all cultures have the right to criticise and seek redress where cultural values are seen to be impinged.
It depends on your view point.
Some people don't care
Some see it as a piss-take, good for a laff,
some see it as cultural misappropriation, insulting
some as commercial marketing opportunity, with cringe/controversy value for longer life.
At one level this issue is also Maori v Maori.
The performers themselves are apparently Maori, possibly a professional troupe or perhaps Kiwis on OE, just looking to make a crust.
This culture/commercialisation debate has been discussed among Maori for ages, and everyone has different opinions.
Personally, I think its a cynical use of haka to attract and sustain attention on the part of Everton FC. shame
Of course you can expect, at a regional or national kapa-haka competition in the not-too-distant future, a new haka of protest with the words (translated into NZEnglish for your convenience)
"Everton, oh Everton! "Tasteless" Toffees that you are!
Get in your waka and get here soon, instead of sniping from afar.
You Dingos from Domingos, time to stop your silly farce,
Time to meet the Nix at our Ring Of Fire
Where they'll kick you up the...... "
Now that's a marketing opportunity, Tony P !!

next year. ROF. be there.

I think we're on the same page, Fire.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
