FFA's Up For The Cup

EXCLUSIVE: Australia's answer to the FA Cup is being mapped out by FFA bosses as they seek to deliver a knockout boost to the game.

Speaking exclusively to au.fourfourtwo.com, FFA chief executive officer Ben Buckley has said a cup competition is one of the governing bodys priorities to help spark further interest.

Australia is one of the few professional leagues which does not boast a cup format during the regular season and it is something Buckley and his FFA colleagues are keen to see change.

It is not yet clear how quickly the A-Leagues very own FA Cup will be introduced or how many other clubs will compete in it but the willingness is there to ensure it does materialise sooner rather than later.

Buckley said: It is something were looking at, an FA Cup-style competition.

We are doing some work on the different formats that that might take. We think that will breed some additional interest in the game from all levels and all sectors of the football community."

He added: "We are somewhat disadvantaged relative to other countries, European nations in particular, in that you cant just hop on a bus and be at your opponents doorstep in an hour or two hours.

You have to get on a plane to make the journey and that can take a day or so. But those things can be overcome.

We may have to create a unique format for Australia rather than just adopt what happens in other countries.

That could mean a more regionalised format and state league sides will be hoping that they have the chance to rub shoulders with the big boys, as is the case with the FA Cup in England.

As it stands, the only knockout action for A-League players and supporters to enjoy is the Pre-Season Cup, albeit the initial stages of that are in a group format and there is no showpiece final for supporters to enjoy.

Have YOUR say - What do you think about "FFA's Up For The Cup"? Tell us NOW in the comment section below.

I say they should scrap the finals series and bring in a Cup. IMO It should start as a local knockout and then progress to a regional knockout, then state, then nationwide with silverware presented along the way to the winners of the different stages. Like European cups, teams such as those from the lower state leagues, state premier leagues and the A league would only be introduced late into the competition with the fixtures only becoming two legged in the last 16 knockout. It should probably run from the start of the winter seasons to coincide with the lower leagues to about the following April or May with the A League introduced after the end of the regular season. Except for the seeding of the rounds, it should be totally independant of the leagues. Selection of final venue would be the major outstanding issue then.

therefore if we market it like a finals series from the last 4 onwards no one except for those that follow the game religiously would even realise that the format has changed and those that do follow it religiously would see that it is more in line with european national cups. As for the PSC, i see it more like a league cup.

It'd be great if they got teams to qualify from each state and let the NZFC teams try to qualify under New Zealand, and then let all 8 a-league teams enter in at a latter stage.

Can't see it happening unfortunately.

Chances of the Phoenix being included ?  Nil.

Assume I'm stupid (not difficult, I agree) and briefly explain why not - or direct me to the post where it is explained. The reason I ask is that I was thinking about the example of Cardiff even as I noticed you mentioning them in the context of the Phoenix's O League rejection. I guess the Phoenix would be well aware of these Cup plans and would try to agitate for entry as much as possible. I'd hope so at least.

I'm just picking up more and more vibes that says the FFA would rather exclude the Phoenix from everything.

Mods  & Hard News

Mods first I posted this in the Nix's general sports forum amd its been moved to news............no real problems..............but I assume Nix's are in the Aussie style FA cup unless Mods and or Hard News has inside information,  cannot understand the move. See note to hard news.

Hard News, where is the FFA anti NZ thing............the assumption as I am aware are the Nix's are in this new FA comp WHEN it gets off the ground...........my understanding it is to replace the existing final serious.

Simple to explain 16 teams are needed to run the comp.

All A-League teams (imcluding Nix) plus balance of state teams to make 16.

Weeks 1 & 2 .........16 teams to 8 teams.
Weeks 3 & 4 ..........8 teams to 4 teams
Weeks 5 & 6 ..........4 teams to 2 teams
Week 7.................One off game for winner.

Possible reasons you feel anti NZ thing.............youth league............not so as posted before funding for the youth league was by Australian Commonwealth and tied to Australian kids only by Commonwealth Government.......................Nix's is not part of OFC nor AFC............ask FIFA & AFC ........FFA whatever you might think of their power are very small fish in AFC & FIFA so the decisions are being made not by FFA but by FIFA & AFC.

Facts Frank Lowy bent over backwards to keep a NZ side in A-League...............reason there are 4.3 million of you buggers and that is a big market to attrack revenue. FL has suggested on a number of times in the expanision that a second NZ team when 13 & 14 are being looked at is well and truely on the cards.

The NZFC sides didnt want the Phoenix to play in the O league funny how they would like the chance to play in the aussie FA cup

Just adding to my previous post..................my assumption is the new structure is to replace the existing final systems because of some things being said in Australia.

But the choosing of the other teams to make up the 16 would be in a more traditional format.

Absolutely, don't think we're not grateful (although some Australians might like to consider how watchable a 7 team league with a bye would be if we weren't there), but the womens league, Youth league and Asian Champions league are all out of reach by the looks of it.

Doesn't exactly make it an even playing field and on that evidence I have suspicions the Cup would be the same.

I think a lot of the Phoenix involvement will depend on whether or not the Cup winners will be allocated an ACL spot if so I think HN might be right

Hard News

There have been miles of post done on the youth league........simply the Australian government tied the funding to Australian players / teams............whatever the rights and wrongs of that are .............it was Australian Commonwealth Government funding to develop players for Olympics and tied to to OZ kids and excluded NZ kids development.

The Womens league it is the same story Australian Commonwealth Government funding to develop the Australian Womens team for World Cup & Olympics.............tied agian to Australia.

Maybe some pressure can be put on NZ gov to do the same for NZ youth and women.

ACL ...............well as I said whatever power you think FFA have...............the rules are FIFA & AFC rules...............not FFA rules.

My belief is Frank Lowy would love to include you guys in the ACL, as that would be a massive marketing tool and tool to gain some influence with the NZ government. Football of all the codes can market itself besides to the 21 million Aussies to 4.3 million NZ's and 5. 1 million in PNG, the cost recovies in NZ & PNG as revenue streams are huge / nay / massive and blind Fredie would do all he could to make it work.

I hope and believe you guys will be in the FA cup style format..........I have seen nothing to think you will not  whereas in every press relase about joining the ACL it was always stated the NZ team could not go the the ACL.
