Ben Collett (think it's the same one) has just received a big damages award.  Based on the quotes from Sir, sounds like he never even came close to his real ability in NZ.

Correct.  In a reserve game when he was 19.  Paid by Boro's insurers

I just dont like the fact that if you go into a tackle and break someones leg, that then gives them chance to sue you.

Pretty scary precedent....what if you dont have a big scary club with insurance to hide behind?

The f**king Mancs are f**king hypocritical!!!

Andy Cole ruins Simon Collosimo's Career with a disgraceful tackle when Eweknighted played the Socceroos in an exhibition match at the MCG 1999 and they argued their way out of paying any form of compensation!!!
w**kers!!!

Its not just footballing careers though. I mean obviously pro players will be protected by their clubs and the clubs by insurance,so not tooooo big a problem there.

Its more...If i were to play against a talented dancer on a saturday...broke their leg, ended dancing career...they could then sue me under this precedent for loss of earnings. Pretty scary.

(dancer random example, but only other career i could think of on spot that could earn a bit of $ by using legs...that or a stripper/hooker...but anyways)

One things for sure...Im never taking a chance to have a kickaround with David Beckham if  given the opportunity now!!!!

For those of not living in the UK, the cliam was made on the basis of lost earnings as it was his career that was ended.  This is in line with British employment practice.  Its times like these that I really appreciate just how good ACC back home is.

And as for Ben, having got to know him well personally when both he and I were back in NZ, many of those in the know always said that he trained too hard and was too slight in nature to ever really make it as a quality player.

He's a very lucky man!

Raises the question about the Knights not doing their homework in signing him, doesn't it? Same situation as Matt Carbon.
It still astounds me what a pack of total fools the Knights management were.
Good on Collett though, you don't ask, you don't get.

As I understand the article, Collett had insurance - he got injured beyond repair - got compensation (lots of it). Good on him.

Nope.  It was the Boro insurers who paid the bill.

The real question is how you can predict the future of a 19 year old lad.  A lot of reports have said tha he really wasn't up to it.  The FA youth cup is no portent to future ability...

The rea question is,should one be awarded compensation for a tackle that could happen anytime during a game? Surely its the risk you take by playing football...why should you be able to sure for something that was just an accident and a risk of the game (as such...).

I wouldnt want to be sued for millions if i went into a tackle and broke the leg of a player who ended up being quite famous and was going onto to great things.

I remember when Dan Keat broke his leg playing for HIBS just before he was supposed to go on trial at Blackburn, under this precedent (minus the fact we have ACC) he could sue the guy who tackled him for rather a lot of money, saying he missed the chance to be signed by a premiership club as a result of the tackle

Its wrong i tell you...

Mmmm . . . .well Ben Collett was actually playing for ManU's reserve team at 19 years old. Thats a step closer than say Lochhead's 10 day trial at the Boro. As far as he is concerned, he did played for a strong club whose has an very impressive youth development to senior team player conversion rate compares to most premiership team. He was one step away from a Premiership debut.

BTW, Boro's insurers were the one who has to pay the bill as expected by most players indemnities causes in their contacts.AllWhitebelievr2008-08-13 23:56:20

Dude, I can only fit 15 letters in the spelling. Somehow when I signed up, this forum wouldn't allow 16 letters in the name so I dropped the "e".

Frankie mate, he was prone to over exersion, which meant he was tired when he played for the Knights... exhausted before taking the field
