I think it means his team-mate got an offer from Gold Coast.
Thats what I thought. That his teammate had an offer from Gold Coast and he was asked by the agent if he like to have the same thing happen to him and so the word got around.
I was confused at first myself but came to the same conclusion as LF1. Really bad bit of writing, isn't?
