I've no problem with anyone doing anything like this - best of luck to them.

I just think that their name is f**king sh*t.  The Flying Squadron??  I mean, seriously, f**k off.  It is like one of the guys who started it had a comedy moustache that they had bought for a costume party a few years ago and wanted to get the money's worth out of it.    And I don't give a f**k that the team mascot is called Captain Hurricane - are you supporting the team or the mascot?  Just because the club made a f**king stupid decision to have a mascot that makes very little sense doesn't mean you need to go along with it.

Call your self the wind machine, or the hurri-krishnas or even the f**king blowing jobs - something that makes some sense.

"We are the Wellington Hurricanes supporters group and we are called the Unrestricted Doolies"

"Why the Unrestricted Doolies?"

"Because our team in from Wellington.......and there was a Duke of Wellington......who passed the Catholic Emancipation Act when he was Prime Minister in 1829........which removed many restrictions that were in place on Roman Catholics.  You owe me $30 for telling you that".

So did anyone go to the game? How did they do? Did the manage to get 'stand up for the hurricanes' sung to the right tune?

I heard they just sat down all game and didn't make a sound.

Probably to be expected, it'll take them a while to warm into it. It's a pretty strong culture they're trying to go against.

LOL at you FM having a crack at their name, and your rather lame reason for yellow fevers name. Good on them for having a crack, see nothing wrong with $30 charge some of you  make it sound like they get nothing for it.
Bloody hell some football supporters get paranoid at the thought another code might do something that has been used by us.As if all the stuff YF does is origional.

i don't see anyone getting paranoid. FM wondered about the name, yes. Others quite rightly said $30 was a bit sh*t. Thats a fair enough opinion. Others wondered how they went.

I think you came into this thread thinking people would be having a go at it, and thats what you went with. I don't think thats the case at all.

Good on them. Its taken the YF to open people's eyes and ears here in Wellington and consider that it's okay to express your passion creatively and humorously when you support your favorite team. Not that we're any benchmark btw..always room for improvement

Actually I could see a "chant off" happening at a neutral event eg cricket where a YF section might sling a few pointed taunts..in good humour of course..at the Cane Squad supporters across the park. RedGed2012-03-18 12:20:42

To be honest I think the Fever should be flattered. Seems to be an attempt to copy us, which rather than take offence at I think we should appreciate. Don't know if they'll actually pull it off, but good luck to them.

I was in aisle  26 and could see this mob over in 33 waving few flags but can't say I could hear what they were chanting,, seemed bit ridiculous really.

Did see the mascot come out in some old plane called .... u guessed it ,,,, the HurriPlane ??

Thats my rugby fix for the year...

[QUOTE=Feverish]there is a (old) plane called a Hurricane

Gave Jerry the what-for in the Battle of Britain!!!

Although, if that was what they were thinking with the name "Hurricanes" how come the club logo isn't a plane? And if they were thinking of the weather events then why not Cyclones, as that is what they are actually called in this part of the world?

Hurricane refers to our windy climate (as well as the Allied work-horse for B.O.B. and early WWII).

In terms of flying squadrons, I get that they are linking it to an NZ squadron (started off using hurricanes and switched to tempests later), but perhaps here is a better example to emulate:

There should be no mystery about their name. Captain Hurricane, a old fight pilot with all the palaver, has been the Hurricanes mascot since about day 1 (the mystery is more about why Capt Hurricane, but that is explained above, and I guess that's the best you can do in creating a mascot out of a wind).

It will be interesting to see how they do, but I found their video a tad excruciating.

I suspect they'll struggle in rugby-land as a centre of passion and chanting, and end up as part of a "look at how ridiculously I am dressed this week" cult a la Sevens. No harm in trying.

Actually, I'm with Mr Positivity with this one.  Good on them for trying to inject a bit of passion and atmosphere into their game/team.

Although I do think that their approach is a bit forced, but maybe that's how it has to be in a culture that doesn't embrace vocal expression.

Looking back at the start of this fred I'd have to agree with Hard News' observation that it will be a hard ask and maybe ultimately too hard.

I don't think we need to knock them (too much).  Infact it's quite a reflection on the YF & FZ that they want to emulate that.

Worth noting that the Phoenix do have an alright relationship with the Hurricanes, so it starting a war between fan groups wouldn't be smart.

Personally though... it's the sort of thing that I think is a bit silly and it's in my nature to mock. Though no problem with you guys a nicer attitude towards it. And hey, they can do what they like. If anything, it will probably just serve to show how great the Yellow Fever is in comparison.

Having seen them at the Cheetahs match - good numbers but very much an uphill battle. They really seemed separated from the crowd. One of the best things about the Fever is that the passion carries like a Domino affect - Aisles 21/22 sing, chant and clap... 23 join in... 24 join in... and so forth. For the Flying Squadron... Aisle 33 does their thing... nobody sitting in aisle 32.... aisle 31 does nothing... aisle 30 does nothing... and so forth. I found the atmosphere incredibly dull - perhaps it'd be better if I sat near aisle 33 instead of halfway, but for the one Nix match where I sat at halfway instead of standing in the zone, the atmosphere was still fantastic.

I'm pretty sure it's a cultural thing. I've been to rugby matches with great atmospheres - All Blacks-Canada in Hamilton a few years ago, the Bay's shield defences in Tauranga, any Crusaders/Canterbury home match in Wellington... but they weren't the kind of active support you get at football matches here. That's not a bad thing, just a different experience. Bopman is right on the money in his earlier post (although I can't speak on the Beige Brigade).

The only other thing I can really say is that the Flying Squadron seems astroturfed compared to Citizen Cane and the Fever. I'll still wish them all the best though, may even join them for a match sometime.

Eejit - I friended Citizen Cane on Bebo, but never got around to joining them at any of the matches. Same with Flying Squadron, except replace Bebo with Twitter/Facebook.

My gf and I decided to go to the basketball tonight.  Flying Squadron were there and trying to get a few songs going, but didn't really work.  What I really noticed is that there were quite a few people wearing their flying squadron tshirts that weren't sitting with them.  Only spotted one dude wearing nix related attire.  Though there were still kids there wearing an epl team shirt.

Was also at the basketball, and also noticed the flying squadron, but did you realise that the Hurricanes were playing at the exact same time? What kind of half-ass fan goes to watch another sport at the same time that their team is playing?!
