I just came across this article on Wynton Rufer and the work he has done and is doing now. I thought it was interesting.

I didn't realize that Rufer was so well connected in FIFA.

It will be a shame if he leaves NZ and goes off to coach Nth Queensland. Once again Oz stealing our best and brightest.

I know that Rufer doesn't get along with the suits in NZFA but it is a real shame that he was never offered a more permanent official role in NZ football. Something like high performance manager.
With his FIFA connections I am sure he could have opened doors for the All Whites.

OK he's a born again and supposedly difficult to deal with...but many sportsmen who reach the top are often driven. Sometimes the  admin guys are just afraid of loosing power. New Zealands loss is Australia's gain.

It's more complex than that.  I've heard many stories of Wynton being deliberately obstructionist towards NZ football actions and policies.

It would be nice if the media didn't take everything he said as gospel and dug a little to find out some of the real history (not a dig at local media, just something that has frustrated me for a while).

I get the impression someone wronged Wynton many years ago and he holds a grudge.

Thanks for that loyalgunner - a real interesting article.  Check out the links in the article.

It's a pity NZ can't have something like Wyners operating nationwide, and that Rufer and NZF don't work together on this.  It's better than anything NZF offers kids.

I understand you're point HardNews - there appears to be bad blood between Rufer and NZF for whatever reason, although I've certainly heard or seen nothing public on this over the years.  If they have differences, it's a pity they can't grow up and get over it.  I wonder if it's to do with Rufer's philosophy that kids need to be introduced to the 'beautiful game' by focusing on ball skills and enjoyment.  If this is the reason, than I'm on Rufer's side.

People have short memories.

Paul Smalley's IPDP was a similar programme to Wyners (which is a direct copy of Coerver as I understand it).

It died in most places although Capital Football still run a variation of it.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Its a real shame the talents of Rufer are not better utilised.

How much better would some of our young attacking players( like Barbarouses and Draper) be if they had one day a week with Rufer, getting individual skills coaching.

Same for the Phoenix. We all know how tentative they were in front of goal last season. I used to arrive early to the Phoenix home games. They used to do shooting drills with the attacking players.

I was amazed....often only about 30% of the shots were on goal(Daniel and Smeltz the best).
Rickie must know Rufers phone number. Why not get NZ's best ever player to come down once a week and run through shooting skills....what harm would it do?

I always thought that as a player, Wynton rode on the coat-tails of his brother

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

My son does PDP thru Capital Soccer, one on one Coaching, team practices etc but nothing comes close to the Elite Coaching program that Wynton offers in Auckland, so we fly him up there every holidays to join them.
I wish someone could advise me of a comparable local program as I'm at a bit of a loss how to continue to nurture a talented kid.

There are four or five who have gone to Japan or Germany on the back of Wynton.  Many of them are back here or never heard from again.

Rufer's problem was that because of some success with a german team he thought he'd become too big for the NZFA. After all, he was Wynton Rufer - votd Oceania player of the century. How dare the NZFA or any of it's members challenge him. Sep Blatter is a personal friend of his after all.

Sorry but Rufers ego is his own undoing and why he has never kicked on to the highest levels.

The only grudge he should ever have is with the English FA not granting him a work permit for Norwich City. He was doing ok there. Other than the German stint he played in "b" league teams.

Rufer seemed like a genuinely nice guy when I met him, no ego that I could detect, admittedly when I was about 12 when I met the guy. He seemed to remember all the kids names at this training camp, even though there were about 50 of us. Don't know how relevent this is though! Be interesting seeing how he goes coaching the Thunder. I think he'll be successful.

German experts (including senior coaches) have suggested that Wynton would have walked in to the 90 and 94 German World Cup squads if he wasn't a kiwi.

Those sides weren't exactly the worlds worst...

Incidentally Willy, there have been rumours of North Queensland backtracking on the Wynton as coach rumours.

I had a young German tourist in my shop the other day and he thinks Wynton is God. My boy is in the Wynrs grassroots programme run here in Napier by Marist - I thoroughly recommend it. It is all ball skills work and I've seen huge strides in my boy's development as he translates what he's learned on game day.
