"Rugby is a much more disciplined, fluid spectacle as anyone watching the recent All Black/Springbok games will have noticed."

Oh. My. God. Is he serious?

lol! Rugby is about as fluid as a block of cement. I will agree with him on one thing though

"Give the referee very strong powers to stamp out dissent

When do you ever see a Rugby player arguing with a referee? Never. When does a Rugby player ever approach a referee aggressively? Never. Why? If he did he would be in breach of Rugbys code of conduct and banned for several games. Cricket has the same template.

We are all sick of these [remove needless insults] footballers protesting, intimidating and arguing with referees"

You don't see a mob of players chasing the referee in rugby, and if it was tried they would be dealt with. Yellow card anyone that isn't the captain that approaches the referee IMO (for a couple of years to stamp it out, then ease back off to allow refs to use common sense once it dies down)aitkenmike2010-08-10 12:34:45

clearly a rugby-head (sad, but hey it's his life and he can waste it any way he wishes)

moving beyond his perverse sporting orientation...

I agree that refs should be given a mandate from FIFA etc to dish the cards for any dissent that goes anything beyond a quick expletive or two

citing for diving might be worth a trial (if done well it would put a stop to it)

What rubbish.  George Greegan spent hours arguing with referees and chirping at them from start to finish of matches.

Incidentally did he mention McCaw's collapse that got Mitchell his first yellow ?  Or did he laugh it off as 'sportsmanship' or 'professionalism' like most other rugby commentator's I've heard commenting on it ?  Amazed lightning doesn't strike some of the f**kers.

How's my driving? - Whine here

glad that there are people to step into the breach when i let my anti-rugby bigotry slip for a minute or two

so, to be clear rugby is still a crap game, supported by w**kers like Laws and Roberts

but i still reckon football could get tougher on some of the dissent etc

and yep if rugby doesn't (don't know, don't watch, don't care) then so much the better if it turns people off that activity

This was the guy who suggested in all seriousness that we should send some firefighters in black to ground zero, get them to do the haka and then they could dive in and save people as a marketing strategy for our country.

In short rugby and cricket could teach soccer a lot.

Kevin Roberts to head FIFA please. What has football been doing without his guidance. Heck he should just run everything.

Agreed, but you must admit that it is slightly different in substance and tone from, for example, the Spanish inquisition led by Iniesta at every Dutch foul, or from Ballacks chasing the ref 40m while yelling and swearing the whole time.

Agree completely on the second part.  Ask the current 'anti-PC rugby boofhead brigade's' current poster boy Andy Haden on his views on diving in football and see how far his nose grows.

They should just do it anyway. I was watching Wests Vs. Rovers at Endeavour a few weeks ok, Rovers were blitzed and conceding their 5th goal they were getting sh*tty at anything they could and so had a go at the ref, he turned around, pointed out 3 players and held up a yellow. More reffing like that is needed

Agreed.

See, I don't have a problem with 'Rugby heads' per se,  there is some good writing about the sport.  My problem is when they start offering ill-informed and patronising views on football.  Generally it's a 'small mans syndrome' where they feel the need to support their minor sport against the 'big monster' that is football.

Most of it doesn't need to be said, it's pandering to the supposed 'masses' and the stereotypical attitude towards football to get hits or readers.  The problem is that I suspect they have under-estimated how many 'Rugby heads' enjoy both sports and get pushed away from Union by these attitudes.  I know it doesn't help me follow the game and I certainly have in the past.

This.

The majority of comments I have read recently on boofhead articles like this show that lots of rugby supporters are just as sick of these "us & them" pieces as we are.

I know I used to be a rugby season ticket holder but recently I've even turned down free tickets when I've been offered them.

Thats pretty much hitting the nail on the head.
Was pretty much the same thing for me with supporting Aus at the world cup - I wanted them to win, but boy did their supporters make it hard for me!aitkenmike2010-08-11 14:00:46

Spot on,News. Thats how it is for me too.

Agreed, those Rugby head comments, may have arisen from insecurity re Rugby's hold on the "national game" mantle and fears re any detrimental impact on the looming 2010 Rugby World Cup with Football's rising profile and recent successes in NZ. They may well be out of step with the many fans who follow all their local and national teams with passion and pride, whatever the code.

We have been largely ignored by the so called Rugby heads for a long time now, and all of a sudden they have finally awoken to the fact that our game is a fairly good and popular one.

I am loving it...fuxxin lovin it!!

People who only watch Rugby on TV think it's a good game because they get to watch endless replays of more rubbish. Replays are needed to keep people from going and making a cuppa in the 60 minutes of resets.

Wouldn't cross the road for rugby even with a free ticket for the companies box at AMI.
But will be first in line for one when the Nix come to town.

Football can take lessons from other sports, but why take a lesson from a minorty sport that has only been proffesion for 15 years?

yes to sin bin- we have used it in lower grade social football- "go and cool off- come back in five mins"

yes to ref being able to march a team ten yards for dissent, encroaching-

yes to three point goals...no wait.
