Just saw this rev up from Ricki on the Stuff website.

Possibly a bit of a media beat up as there are already the two import slots to be filled...Recruitment always seems top be a hot topic on the boards but it  looks like even Ricki's starting to think to next season already.

Here's the article:

Herbert warns of Phoenix cull

By JOHN MATHESON - Sunday News | Sunday, 16 December 2007

Don't call him The Grinch but Nix boss Ricki Herbert may have just ruined Christmas for 22 professional footballers.

As his Wellington Phoenix charges prepare for five days off while the A-League goes into a 12-day hiatus, Herbert has revealed up to three players could be axed in the post season.

Two players Brazilians George and Cleberson were axed in November but Herbert last night hinted the cull wasn't over.

"They are maybe three spaces up for grabs," Herbert said. "But we won't sign for the sake of signing.

"If new players are going to be signed they have to be better than what we already have.

"As a group we have moved forward well but we need to look to add any x-factor we can."

The Nix can still qualify for the playoffs in January but with only four games to go, it's unlikely. Maximum points were required from Friday's game against the Roar but poor refereeing and the Nix's inability to kill off the Queenslanders despite dominating the second spell saw the points shared in a 1-1 draw.

The Nix will train twice this week before dispersing until Boxing Day. Four days later they will play the Jets in Newcastle in a must-win game as they battle for sixth place with Melbourne and Perth.

Herbert's hint at a cull will ensure there's no let-off from the players despite little chance of a top-four finish.

"Once our season ends it will give me a chance to solidify my thoughts for next year," Herbert said. "And make no mistake about it, next year we must take big steps forward.

"We have a great base and I'm already on record as saying next season will be all about making the playoffs.

"For that to happen there'll need to be some recruitment. So, players need to keep themselves in the shop window and they can for the next four games."

We were already pretty certain of a cull weren't we? I want to see Brownlie play more. Looked impressive in his cameo against the Galaxy so I think he should be given more of a look at before he's gone. Hopefully this does motivate the lads in the right way!

when I think what a huge difference that Rees has made to the defence, then I can see the point about finding players who may not make the EPL, but have talent and are prepared to graft until the final whistle each week.

The 110% guys at the moment (for me) would be Smeltz, Rees, Moss, Daniel, Felipe .....

Nice of Matheson to actually have some quotes in his attempt to destabilise the squad this time.

Worst. Journalist. Ever.

Read it again.  Ricki says there may be up to 3 spaces. We already have only 22, so there is one.  We have the three players that might decide to retire age wise... so Ricki saying there may be three places doesn't say anyone will be sacked.

Media beat up, like last months when Matheson made up a story saying 5 will go.

hey baiter - last month Matheson said five. cleberson and george has since left. Five - two equals THREE!

...but he made up the five last time, so it's more like X - 3 = Y

Heard he wasn't remotely popular at the Phoenix after that bit of trolling.

seems like the fella that rates the sunday papers on this site rates the sunday news. perhaps "being liked" isn't such a bad thing for a tabloid journalist. think about it!

Sorry, I read this on Stuff, posted it, then realised to my horror that I'd referred to a piece of 'news' from the Sunday News - a paper I've never read in the flesh.  Another issue with supporting a team from a distance...about time I came home.

Though I never really rated this article as I thought it was a beat up as much as a rev up once the numbers were calculated.

What I'd really like to see in print is some nice feature articles run on the players who've taken a leap of faith to move from all over the globe to a fledgling club based in Wellington. Where they've come from and why and what their expectations were, what they think of the League and of the city and what they think they can bring to the game here, I'd also like to know what they left behind and what their families think of this move as it wouldn't have been taken lightly, even as a Kiwi moving home. Hope Dom P's reading this...

Bones, that was exactly the article I was thinking of as I wrote about the need for improving the quality of football articles.

It's a really good read and not the general dross sports writers have been guilty of giving to the the punters (personally I think a lot of sport writing is dumbed down thanks to the prevalence of egg chasing articles).

The Dom Post have been going the extra mile to give some insight into players lives whereas most of the stuff on 442/A-league site/etc only scratches the surface. I also liked the Heralds recent article about the anniversary of the Knights losing their licence and the birth of the Phoenix. I think the journos are catching on that football writing is in demand and that it's readers are discerning and interested.

This YF site is a bloody good catch-all for what's out there though. I'm loving the fact it's all in one place as it makes for a damned fine read.
