Mark Watson
Lots of excellent points and well worth a listen (access the audio bank on Radio Sport for Saturday 21st @6pm)
Some of the points made...
- The Rugby World Cup is trotted out by our media as the 3rd biggest sporting event on the planet, Trevor McKewan says it wouldn't be in the Top 20.
- He says stats quoted like 400m watch the Rugby World Cup final is false, he says 31m watched the last one in france and 97% of the 31m were from three countries, the two finalists, England and South Africa, and the host - France.
I thought is relevant regading some of the comments that have floating around here re where Football places during Tv1/3 Sports news section.
Watson said he gets p*ssed off when some recent All Whites news/build up to the big game is leapfrogged by an a possible dodgy hamstring of one of AB's.
He is a High Performance Coach for Triathlon, so mentions that a bit, but...
Quite a bit of football discussion re media coverage etc...

I'd think more people watch the Superbowl than probably the whole of the RWC!
Our media is useless.

Marius Lacatus2009-11-23 21:30:38Yet only a handful of elite competitions truly attract global audiences. The final match of one of the biggest international sporting events last year, the Rugby World Cup, drew only 33 million viewers globally, according to Initiative. While that was enough for fourth place, it was less than half the audience for the No. 2 and No. 3 events, the Brazilian Grand Prix and the Champions League final.
By comparison, the final match of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, for instance, drew an average live audience of 260 million; the final of the Euro 2004 soccer tournament attracted 161 million viewers.

Very interesting indeed, I dont think I have ever heard one New Zealand TV or Print Journo mention the 33 million figure.
Can ya imagine Andrew Saville admitting something like that?

Seriously? Are NZers that ignorant?
Edit: Not implying that the cricket world cup is close to the third biggest event.
