However, Phoenix hit back four minutes later, when the always-dangerous Brazilian Felipe chipped a perfect corner kick which captain Ross Aloisi put away.

It was Daniel..?

I don't think you boys have got this one quite right. The A-League uses the term 'marquee player' for legal reasons - i.e. each team is allowed one and they fall outside of the salary cap.
The dictionary term for marquee is; "Being an athlete of exceptional skill and popularity" and in that article they said; "Daniel, one of Phoenix' marquee players"... so really i think they are correct here. And by saying "one of" they are clearly not referring to our legal 'marquee player'.
Also, Felipe does take some of our corners - sure it wasn't him that took that one?
Sorry to be a dampener boys... just thought the article may not be as stupid as we think...

I think you're defending the journos. If the media refers to a marquee player in a different sense of the word than the teams do, it'll just get confusing. Therefore, the media is stupid and wrong and needs to change. Or something like that

Well in this case, yes I am indeed defending this ONE journo. He has obviously made a mistake with the Felipe/Daniel thing but I don't think he can be faulted for his marquee comments.
The term 'marquee player' is used frequently in sports journalism - that includes football, and not in the A-League legal sense, but its proper sense.
I respect some parts of the media, and i most definitely respect their writing abilities. It's not easy to write a decent article that keeps the reader interested from the first to the last paragraph. Would be a difficult and high-pressure job.
Wouldn't you agree?

Aye. /me agrees.

I'll still call it a mistake, but it can be forgiven.

I've been having a crack at the writing thing myself lately on this very website - have a look at my latest one;

Not up to media standard but a bit of fun nonetheless...

Yea, I like your ones. They're different to the normal journalism "neutral" perspective. Not so much hard facts. I actually look forward to it every home game now

Terribly s*xist of me really - apologies to any female who happens to read this!

And yomcat - cheers for the encouragement mate, i often wonder if anyone actually reads them apart from people i know! Definitely gives me some reason to continue, i do enjoy giving the fans perspective as I think it is often missed in the news articles.
