Millmow and Media watch!
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Want to have a laugh? Have listen to the last two to three minutes of today's (4th of October)Media Watch. It's National Radio's eye on the media.
The last few minutes concern a DomPost piece that had Ricki in business class whilst an injured Siggy was in economy class...  Only it wasn't true.

Millmow hates the Nix I thought, I guess years of following the NZ Cricket team around the world will do that to a man

That is outstanding on Tony Smith's part. Much respect.

Tony Smith's apology read -

APOLOGY TO RICKI HERBERT
I supplied information to the Dominion Post for inclusion in the sports section's Sidelines column (Friday September 18).
My information incorrectly implied that Wellington Phoenix Coach Ricki Herbert flew business class from Dubai to Melbourne while an injured player travelled in a broken economy class seat.
I now accept that Ricki Herbert was one of the Phoenix personnel upgraded to business class and that the player in question (Ben Sigmund) was not injured and was instead rested for the Melbourne Victory match.
I apologise sincerely to Ricki Herbert, Ben Sigmund and the Wellington Phoenix for any embarassment caused.

The apology was in the form of a classified ad in the Dominion Post Monday September 28th.

Agreed. Admitting one's mistakes deserves respect in my book.

Surely this must be unusual - for a newspaper journalist to have to BUY space to place a retraction because his editor would not print it for him?

DomPost = joke publication.

It does seem quite extroadinary that Tony would need to take such a step, and highly unusual.

I hope the Phoenix are picking up the cost of the classified!

Why?

At the root of it all is Tony randomly spouting rumours into the paper...

I hope Tony sent the Phoenix flowers and chocolates on top of printing his own retraction.

bc Smith has gone beyond the call of duty in putting the record straight. WHo knows what context his remarks were made and to whom, but I think what he did is quite remarkable.

Look, Im not actually serious about the Phoenix paying for the classified, but I hope they acknowlege Smith's gesture, if for no other reason than they could do with making a few more friends in the media.

I am guilty of making no distinction between Herbert and the Phoenix (blame the t-shirts). I suppose its really Herbert that should do the acknowledging.

Tony Smith - has done the decent thing (unlike Millmow/Dompost)

however, as Smith is about to head over to Bahrain - he has also done the wise thing and helped smooth things over with a key contact for his (hopefully, better researched) World Cup stories

I still don't get what Millmow/Dompost are up to though

Ha ha ha

Can't give Smith too much credit - he's gone out on a limb, got it horribly wrong and then done the only decent thing which is to apologise.  the least he can do is admit he stuffed up!

Did Ricki and his sexy mo seduce Milmow's missu back in '82 or summink?  He's a bit of a sh*t-stirrer!

This is a good reason for him to apologise.

I would not blame Ricki/Phoenix/NZF in the slightest for giving other journalists peference ahead of Smith/Fairfax in the future.

There has to be some sort of consequence.

That would be silly. Tony has got it wrong, and 'fessed up -- even though his name was not attributed to the orginal sin. Publicly ackowledging his error WAS the consequence.

Tony is one of New Zealand's very best sports writers, and argubably our pre-eminent football writer, with decades of covering the game. He's also a bloody decent bloke and a real lover of football. He's actually one of the best media friends the code has got.

i would add that these days there is a lot of pressure on newspaper staff to come up with humourous little vignettes, gossip and rumour to fill anonymously-penned columns such as Sidelines or Diary. Indeed, i got a note the other day from my editor begging for any "funnies" to fill a similar column.

And it is very easy for the telling of a tale to get twisted as it gets bandied around, with scarily little time for fact-checking these days. An occupational hazard.

it would have been very easy for the paper to publish an unattributed apology, implicating nobody, for what was an unattributed item. For whatever reason, that did not happen.

But Smith put his hand up, and took his medicine, when many others might well have hid behind anonymity. Fair play in my book. Forget the churlish notions of retribution. Let's move on.

I think that's a valid counterpoint, but I still wouldn't blame them.

While notionally Tony has done the right thing it is still a howler.  I mean, it's like someone at NZF not appealing a ridiculously long international suspension or, oh...wait.

From what I understand the Dompost saw no need to apologise as Siggy was listed on a Phoenix press release as being injured, and the following week he was listed as "returning from injury".

Should the media not believe a club's own press release?

The only thing factally wrong then is the "broken" seat reference, which is hardly significant.

Good on Tony for apologising but not sure his info was wrong. Tony is a bloody good guy and a real football lover, he's one of the few media that does a good job covering the sport.

By the way, Fairfax is the only media that has bothered to fork out to send someone to the Middle East, so would seem a bit churlish to call for other media to be given preference.
There are some outlets that haven't even touched this match till the last few days.

Come on down TV3.

How can one man being away remove all presence of football from a national networks news reporting.  It's a disgrace.

Maybe Gourdie got possessive and jealous and locked the football cabinet and took the key with him.

If Tony thought it was worth apologising Im sure it was. There are facts and there is tone and suggestion. The sidelines comment was yet another in a long history of opportunistic Sidelines snipes at Herbert. I have found those snipes tiresome and unprofessional. And I certainly am not somebody who thinks Herbert has managed media releationships well.

Media almost always find a reason not to make a clarification or corrrection, rather than looking at the reasons why they should. It was refreshing that Tony took a different view.

TV coverage of the AWs preparation has been attrocious and they have been shown up by the newspapers (and their online versions) and radio.

in more  general terms a survey on media credibility was released yesterday and recieved some coverage on morning report

it indicated high levels of distrust of the media from respondents

it also noted a strong belief that media organisations are unwilling to acknowledge errors (this thread = a case in point)

what 'amused' me was spokes-people from mainstream media saying (in effect) that the punters and/or the researchers didn't have a clue

well there's a winning attitude for ya
