I try to avoid Murray D--khead Deaker like the plague normally, but happened to hear him make the most outragous statement on the radio just a few minutes ago. When asked if he had noticed a difference in the behavoir of rugby parents on the sideline in recent years. He said yes and went of into a frenzy blaming the whole thing on the behaviour of English football fans, raving on about the abusjve chants and such like. I could hardly believe what I was hearing, how on earth can English football fans effect the behaviour of followers of a different sport on the other side of world. The guy is a complete and utter anti football pr-tt.
Did anyone else hear it and maybe hear his explanation? as I didnt hear anymore.

This seems a very good approach. I'm sorry to hear that he slipped through your defenses.

Deaker, Fukwit, Rugby die hard. 3 things in common.

Anti Football? I'm afraid so, he has been for a long time - since it started to threaten the numbers of followers of the oval thing.

I heard this yesterday as well and immediately thought of putting it up here today - it was a totally ridiculous statement. It got me well wound up, he is a not a sports journalist and more a prorugby journalist who doesn't have a clue about anything else.

I understand English football has had its moments, but he didn't refer to the old school hooligans, or even the problems in London last week, he said it was the chanting! Trying to justify why there is minimal atmosphere at a rugby match. What an absolute joke.

By the way, some of the stuff he was saying was borderline racist. I don't want to open up that can of worms but I found the way he has approached this schoolboy brawling thing unacceptable. Of course, his listeners will generally be the type that agree with him, but I found some of it a touch embarrasing.

Deaker, embarassing?  Where on earth would you get that idea from?

Personally I blame the cricket.  If it wasn't for that Barmy Army rabble coming over and injecting a bit of fun and humour into the crowd, we'd still be staring silently at the Web Ellis game and occasionally shouting when there was a try.  Oh, wait.  We still do!

2ndBest and I both heard it on the way to the bubbles game at Newtown so I would say around half one.

Amusingly I'll bet you can go back and find Deaker saying how great it is to have the Barmy Army here adding 'atmosphere', just underlining the hypocrisy of the man.  He swings opinion to follow the masses qwuicker than Phil Gifford switching Rugby Union loyalties.

That quickly HN?? I heard it on the way  home from work, so it was around 1:30ish -2 pmish. As for the racist statements, I was most surprised when those came out. I'm waiting to hear if or how many complaints have been laid.

No, anti-polynesian I think. In fairness I listened to him for a minute and one caller but it seemed like he was equating the Kelston-Grammar thing with english football chanting. Then some guy rung up and said the kelston-grammar thing was largely about polynesians.

Loved all the comments about Murray Deaker. Have never seen anything ever about how anti football he is.Every week up the clubrooms we used to get together and moan about this w**ker. One of us was always going to ring him and give him the message, but nobody ever did.
Have not listened to ZB for more than 10 years. Looks like I have not missed a thing.
He probably still thinks that rugby is the worlds most popular sport.

No, but he's seen the news where West Ham vs Millwall get's more coverage than Chatham Cup semi-finals.

Surely you're not suggesting a radio talkback host (or even a TV presenter @ 7 pm) speak from actual first hand experience?

Just flicked on the telly, there was Deaker and ...
... Phoenix fans praised as best fans in NZ sport.

True!

With a little help from his friends, of course. But well done fever.

Credit where credit's due LG. Deaker was quite receptive, in his Martian-like way (based on looks) to the view that it's time for other sports to take a higher profile and that the the Phoenix has the BEST FANS IN THE LAND!

Taken his time to come to the former conclusion, and had a few "friends" (eg, Miles Davis) helping him with the latter, but a lot of folks watch his show. So we'll take it!

When I got home from work, my wife couldn't wait to tell me about the huge props Deaker, Simon Doull, Miles and Jason Stewart gave Yellow Fever and Wellington Phoenix supporters on Deaker on Sport .
Best Fans in New Zealand Sport.....There's one for the books! Recording it now.
LG.... credit where its due mate.

I don't agree with every outrageous thing he's ever said but sometimes he hits the nail on the head.
.......

ok just seen the segment,
Miles Davis started up full of praise for WP fans, Simon Doull took over from him with more of the same, Jason Stewart made his own positive contribution re growing crowd numbers at the ROF and brilliant atmosphere....Deaker didn't say boo.
Miles Davis also put in a big plug for the NZ WCQ's two of the most important football matches in 27 years.
he's part of a tour party going to the away match  ....
and even invited Deaker down to Wellington to sample a bit of the NZ Football atmosphere at the home match in November!

Miles Davis is one of the few football men in the NZ media who doesn't spend all of hsi time bagging football in NZ.  Everyone else wants to criticise as much as possible, but he takes a different view which is nice to hear

That would be great. He actually knows what he's talking on a world scale, he's followed England in Europe and West Ham through England, he get's it. I really like how he's always willing to talk to fans about whatever team they support on his radio show. Totally different from Kent Johns, who is a big football fan, yet quickly shuts the convos down and goes back to discussing league/rugby whenever someone rings up about football
