Sure can, have been doing this with my non-Somnet enabled box for a while now. I'm very behind in terms of technology :-/

Must try harder

It's incredible isn't, a little bit of competition for Sky to compete with and suddenly there is a ton more football on TV, both live and delayed. Fantastic stuff.

Welcome to the real world...this is what the rest of the civilized planet has had for ages.....just in little old NZ we are 20 years behind. On the plus side, we have EFTPOS. I'm sure many countries would kill to have a system like our EFTPOS system in place.

Watching the Leicester V Leeds game now. Loving this! Never thought I'd see the championship on tv here.

Also never thought I'd be playing round with an aerial again...think have got it sorted now though. Just had a weird cut out every couple of minutes which seems to have stopped after latest aerial adjustment.

Chose to watch sommet for the community shield over espn, even though espn had a better picture I couldn't listen to 90 minutes of that crap espn commentary.

Visited India 18  months ago - have 24 hour dedicated football channels plus football on many other sports channels.
Cheap $12 / night hotels I stayed in usually had TV in room with 50 channels (and ensuite bathroom!).
Even watched Auckland City live in World Club Cup in Agra (city of the Taj Mahal).

So I went to JB Hi Fi and spoke with a charming man there about my freeview options.  He told me all I needed was to buy some rabbit ears and I would be sorted.  I bought some rabbit ears and after a couple of scans and loads of movement of said rabbit ears, all I managed to pick up was Prime with a terrible reception, and another channel that the reception was even worse (so bad I could not even decipher what was on, thus allowing me to find out what channel it was).

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooo Freeview.

I’ll chime in here. I think you have a different problem there Frankie.

Since Freeview is digital, you will have two different scenarios with reception, you will either have perfect picture or no picture at all (one or the other).
It sounds like you are still looking on the old analogue signal, where the channels would sometimes ghost or have snow (this cannot happen on digital, the same as Sky)

What brand and model of TV do you have?
What does it say if you type your address into this website http://www.freeviewnz.tv/coverage.aspx

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooo Freeview.

Did the guy at JB Hi Fi ascertain if you have a Freeview digital receiver built into your TV?
If not, you're wasting your time trying to pick up a signal with any type of aerial and will need to buy a Freeview set-top receiver box (something under $100 at the Warehouse or as low as $40 - $50 with "Buy Now" on Trade Me here:  http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/SearchResults.aspx?sort_order=&searchString=freeview+receiver&rptpath=124-&type=Search&searchType=9572&generalSearch_keypresses=17&generalSearch_suggested=0
Anything which says "UHF" or "terrestrial" is what you're after - avoid anything saying "satellite"
Then try plugging your rabbits ears into that - if you still don't get a decent picture, ask for a refund on the rabbits ears and you'll have to see if you have an existing UHF aerial on your roof (I was lucky to find a good one already there and just paid a tradesman to connect a cable through the wall to the aerial) - or buy an outdoor aerial (as low as $40 on Trade Me).
The dodgy signal you're picking up with the rabbit ears is probably the old analogue signal which is still being broadcast in Wellington until the end of September - or else an indoor aerial is no good for your location and you'll need an outdoor aerial.

Not from my experience. When the signal strength drops the picture does break up (IIRC have had this experience with Prime, Choice, Maori and possibly Sommet) - signal strength for HD broadcasts is always good however.

Hmm, you are right in some respect Bullion. There are times that the signal can be interfered with, causing Pixelation (squares) observed on the screen. however the picture is still there(much like rain fade for those who have Sky).

If the picture keeps breaking up all the time, then there is another issue causing the loss of signal.

Normally fixed by using a better antenna (or bigger).

is it only those channels you have issues with? how often are they happening?

Hardly ever happens. More when the weather is poor - probably my antenna getting blown around a little bit.

I might put that on my business card... though I did get it from DSE in Te Hutt - the guy said it'd be 50/50 whether they worked but $60 is better than paying someone to install another aerial on someone elses house.

Plugged aerial into newish (built in FV) telly and it's awesome... I guess the difference was the guy said there's a good chance it won't work (though if it didn't to bring it back and say they gave me the wrong one so I'd get a refund lol) so I had little expectation it would.

I used to live in Mt Vic. Had rabbits ears aerial in the window and got very clear Freeview signal. Guy in the shop said the signal comes from Mt Kaukau  If you can see the big aerial on the hill from your house you will get clear Freeview with rabbits ears. If you live in a hole or in a gulley or behind a hill or in Aro Street then you need an outdoor aerial.

Watching sommet sports this morning. Obviously. Anyway, all I could think was why the fuck do they have that massive logo on the top right of the screen ? It's ugly and stupid. I thinks there's a seagull on it but I can't be sure. Why not have something that is actually, you know, transparent so you can watch the game ? It's got to be the worst logo I have ever seen. They must have given the graphical design work to the local primary school. Complete shit.
