Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

and hasn't won a competitive match since January.

Gracious! That must be tens of matches after all January is seven months ago...  Hang on since January Phoenix have played one competitive match...

Fred, we expect better. Shame on you.

In January, at the end of last season, the Phoenix went the last three matches without a win. In pre-season, they played matches against Melbourne, Central Coast and two Chinese sides without a win. Add the first of this season, and we get eight matches without a win. They did beat some local Wgtn club teams in pre-season but I dont class them as being "competitive" matches.

Cheers

IMO our only "competitive" matches are in the league. I wouldn't call any of our preseason friendlies competitive.

You know we belong together...

agreed Oska - most journalists would accept the fact that pre-season friendlies are not considered "competitive matches"

FW has been  rightly criticised and I'm disappointed to see his fairly easily dismissed attempt at self justification, surprises me really as he has seemed reasonable overall

In the article he hasn't referred to the friendlies as competitive matches so we can't ping him for that.  Saying no wins since Jan' is a bit hard for a fan to read, even if factually correct but the article as a whole seems pretty fair.

so those Chinese matches were for a fifa sanctioned trophy were they??

i don't think so,

that makes them friendlies, not competitive matches, in my view

I know mate. Can't please anybody in this business!
Understand what you guys are saying but it still doesn't change the fact they went three matches at the end of last season, four matches in pre-season against A-League or CSL quality opposition, and now one in this season without a win. Whether you agree or not about pre-season, the point I was trying to make is that they haven't tasted victory since January, which cannot be good for the confidence. Hopefully that changes tomorrow.

"Fred says that the Phoenix are lacking confidence and it is preventing them from winning games."

Now thats how a reporter would mis-quote someone that said what Fred did.

Use of the word "competitive" is a single large mistake . . . but nice article all the same. Much better than Terry Maddaford who makes multi large mistakes. I'm ok with Fred making the occasional slip ups, you always bound to have that in the Journalism, usually Sport Journalism are the most accurate (allowing for obvious bias) reporting in the whole newspaper.

Anonymous internet whingers are being too hard on Fred.
He's done great things for football in this town.

OK, that doesn't mean he can't make a mistake, but I wouldn't call this a mistake, just the statement of a truth that some people would rather not hear.

I made comment in another thread on the timing and placement of that opinion piece.

However I do think that Fred's comments are justified re timing and record.  Or at least worhty of debate.  The start of the season is too early to tell if Ricki will make good (new squad, more teams in the comp).

BUT... as a generalisation if you look at the EPL and the teams which enjoy sustainable success they seem to stick with their gaffers and not rotate them after a three match losing streak.

I think Ricki should be a stabilising influence but why not leave the decision until at least half way through the League or at the end surely (I realise that half way through might not provide stability but that would be dependent on the position the nix occupy on the table and how likely they are to get to the playoffs)?

Yes - there's no pleasing us Nix fans - because there will never be enough coverage!

But seriously - that other league in Angle-land there's plenty of coverage of that in other places.  A-League/nix is the most home-grown pro footy we have.  We need to get away from this cultural cringe that local stuff doesn't measure up - otherwise it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.

TV3 is way ahead of the other lot and DomPost gives great coverage (my other comments about Fred right hand lef hand W notwithstanding).  But MORE than the few seconds would be appreciated by those of us who were there (re-live the glory) and the gazillions of viewers elsewhere in the country who might have a passing interest in the round ball code.  Clips where the YF are making lots of noise would be good for making a good impression on punters too (atmoshpere!).

Rant, rant, rant,   where's my sedatives....

Just read it. I agree with 2nd best: that sort of stuff resides in these sorts of threads!

I don't like paying my subs to the DomPost for this kind of rubbish - I'd get a sunday rag instead (but might not get passed page 3 to the tabloid voice of the people cr@p).

This has to be one of VERY few forums where fans can interact with the Sport's Journos (Fred, Gourdie) and Club management (TonyP).

What a bloody brilliant site this is. .  ..  And what good sorts the above people are for getting involved.

Easily achieved at the eighty minute mark of our home games...

Personally, while I agree that public opinion in newspapers is best saved for letters to the editor, I have no real problem with it.  If publishing different viewpoints on issues rather than just articles that may be subject to reporter bias, then it may be more conducive to readers who don't come on the boards to make their own opinions and hopefully debate them amongst their mates. Watercooler chat etc. Thus putting the club more in the public mindset, which may very well lead to more people coming along.

Don't get me wrong.

I think Fred provides excellent coverage of the Nix and football in general.  I also don't disagree majorly with his opinion on the timing of Rickis contract extrension announcement.

BUT:

1. Having that opinion piece next to the match report was odd to say the least.
2. The readers' views follow up was more like what you would get from the entertainment pages (getting film go-ers comments).  Not sure if this was Fred's doing but it looked like a bit of a rush job to fill up space.

So yes it gets people's attention and stimulates conversations, but I don't really care what punter a and b (in the DomPost) think about the decision.  What would have been good is if someone had followed up more with Tony P or Ricki or other nix management.

Blanket man...your take on this?

Hmmm, column with boobs. We'll have a look at it.
Some interesting thoughts here. I will just add that part of a newspaper's role is to reflect public opinion and as it happens reader feedback is usually some of the most-read stuff. Readers like to be able to interact with their newspaper.
Also, re: the placing of the stories on Monday (the lead match report and the opinion piece), they were entirely different topics so it wasn't like we were contradicting one by having the other there.
I'm sure everyone will agree the outcome of the Perth match is not related at all to the topic of the odd timing of the re-appointment, one match into a season.
Anyway, I try and jump on YF every now and then. You guys do a good job.
Cheers

OK I think I've taken up enough inches and maybe we'll agree to slightly differ.

1. Yes we'll certainly look at it (but only for the article mind).

2. My point (ooh err) is that having two articles about the nix side by side even if they are "unrelated " does create a bit of contradiction and does create a bit of angst amongst us prone to paranoia.

E.g. Maybe there could be a glowing report about a black and white NE England team's win over Reading and next to it could be speculation about the next owner of the club.  Wouldn't that detract from a great write up of the match?

Anyway, no more cavel from me Mr Fred and co.

What should have been stated in the first instance was "Phoenix, who have failed to win their last 4 A-League matches..." rather than since January, which to the casual reader seems like an absolute age!!

The games v Melbourne and the Chinese teams were no more nor less 'competitive' than those against the local sides, which were won.

Jumped on here thinking we were taking the piss about Ferrante "guilt-edged" opportunity on Sunday. Fred will probably tell us that's what editors are for.

On the stuff thsi thread is actually about - I think Steve-O's hit the nail on the head regarding our long forgotten losing streak (unbeaten since August, Fred ).

Re: the opinion piece next to the report on us beating Perth. I read it online, as the Dom Post isn't available here, so don't have a view on its positoning. I didn't think Fred was critical, and merely was questioning of the timing of Ricki's extension.

Many on this forum were bemoaning the fact that the Newcastle game was more of the same stuff we sat through the previous season, and one sensed the 'Sack Ricki' rumblings weren't far off again. If they'd sacked Ricki instead of re-signing him, Fred probably would have been questioning the timing as well. I certainly would.
Perhaps it could have waited till Tuesday, and given the Nix an extra day's coverage in the media.wolfman2009-08-26 00:05:25
