Westpac is a round stadium. Name the last game in a World Cup to be played in a round stadium. All other venues are too small.
Oceania's World Cup?
Can't believe how many people think this is a possibility.

There you go Snedden. Qatar - proof that it can be done. Now all you need is millions of dollars in bribe money and its all ours.

Sepp Blatter, after meaningful discussions with John Key and the board of Fonterra, have agreed that the 2024 Fifa World Cup will be renamed The Milk Cup, and it will be held jointly in New Zealand and one other nation (yet to be named).

Do you think that Australia has a chance of hosting the WC? If you think they could, then its not inconceivable that a group and couple of knock out games could be held here.

Even played some games in Japan that are used as baseball venues and plenty have had athletic tracks which is probably worse than at Wgtn.

But you know politics change all the time JV
One vote last time doesnt mean one vote forever

Joel Griffiths will never play for this club....

At the same stage of the vote, USA only got 2 more. Qatar also won this bid, and we know it was not all above board.
I would love to see a poll on the front of the website along the lines of "Do you thing a joint bid of New Zealand and Australia for hosting the FIFA world cup would succeed?"
I would definitely vote no.
Or "Would Australia bother giving NZ games if they were to make a world cup bid?"
once again, no. Shown by the fact they bid for the tournament outright by themselves last time.
I wouldnt even want a world cup here - it would be an embarrassment. Imagine Brazil vs. France or some shark in a place like New Plymouth.... lol
We've got the u-20 World Cup and that's about as good as we can hope for - and good enough for our little backwater at present.
Still, all this media discussion today is good for arousing public interest in football - and will feed into building interest for the more important item on the agenda for us - the u-20 World Cup just six weeks away.
It's good that a guy who's been a leading figure in cricket and rugby administration, Snedden, is giving promotion to football free of charge and putting ambitious ideas out there - and all at a good time to feed into the u-20 tournament.
Being part of hosting games in a senior World Cup would all be down to Australia - and who knows when or if they'll want to bid again considering the bidding process and campigning cost them about 46 million Australian dollars (42 million of it federal government funds)
The Aussies would expect us to foot part of the bill for any bid.
Not that the FFA would ever get any more government funding for a bid ever again after last time.
This "Bid Book" every bidder has to put together costing millions alone could be a bit beyond NZ Football:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-22/senate-to-vo...
"7.30 [current affairs program] has obtained an internal FFA budget from 2009 which allocated $7 million to be spent on the bid book and associated expenses.
However, by 2011, the cost had blown out to $11.02 million.
7.30 asked the FFA to explain why there was such a significant increase in this particular expense and for a detailed breakdown of what the $11.02 million had been spent on.
It declined to give details, simply saying in a statement: "Budgets ... did indeed vary ... This is entirely normal."
But Lord David Triesman, who chaired the England bid for the 2018 World Cup, said he could not understand how $11 million could be spent on the bid book.
"If you are going to print it on gold leaf, I expect you could rack up the cost," he said.
"But, no, the straightforward answer is no I can't."
England's bid book cost 4 million pounds, half the amount spent by Australia.
World Cup final at Hutt rec. a few temporary stands, lights on cranes and were good to go.

I think it is a nice narrative to sell.
Radio nz saying the Aussies laughed when contacted. There's your answer
How is the infrastructure in and out of Eden Park as Tegal said? Yes this will be in 10 or so years at the earliest but at the moment, we can't even raid a piggy bank to find cash to build Lens toy train set and Auckland council is almost bankrupt (and most certainly morally bankrupt). The government have made it clear that Auckland transport of that nature, is not a priority too.
It's not a "toy train set", it's a proper public transport system, like all world-class cities have.
Kinda weird that Snedden didn't mention the under-20 world cup in his interview though?
FIFA would never allow a World Cup to be hosted by 2 Nations in different Confederations

Government is putting money in to do a feasibility study
Perhaps they should just ask the wise men on here ?
Line up with your caps out :-)

I believe it is worth taking this further step and seeing if it is possible to make a combined bid with Australia.
We have run one world event by ourselves, one combined with them, both have been successful. We are about to run another by ourselves for the stakeholders, I hope it goes well to increase our credibility.
If it is feasible financially and the benefits stack up in a partnership with Aussie, then there is a chance a bid may happen. After that, it depends on the politics in the organisation and the football world at the time.
Will it happen ?? Unlikely, but ....

You know it's a bad idea when Rufer is backing it.
Man its anooying when brainless people instantly say "we dont have the stadia"
Its a JOINT bid, we would probably only use Eden Park and Westpac, maybe one more. And it would probably be in 2030 which would mean we have 15 YEARS to improve a couple stadiums. Easy.
Costing...
FIFA would never allow a World Cup to be hosted by 2 Nations in different Confederations
The single most important fact in the equation is this: Fifa have given the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
If they can do that then anything and everything is possible for future tournaments imo.
