In his latest press conference ahead of the Australia v China WC qualifier, Verbeek was at his classy best...
Halfway thrrough the press conference he got the runs and had to leave.

Don't rate him as a coach and i think Aus took a backward step in signing him to fill the national post..

I think from having Guus as a coach to now having him the aussie team are starting to struggle and their football has dropped down a few notches in terms of style and technique.. We were always going to struggle to find a decent replacement after Guus but i believe they should of pursued some other options before signing this clown Smithy..

Well the only other serious contender for the job seemed to be Phillipe Trousier, but Verbeek won out as he said he would base himself in Australia. I do like his frankness with the media and how he has had camps with a-league socceroos. It is still too early to say how his time as coach will pan out as he has only had 2 games to try tactics and both games had very different players involved, in fact how many who started against Qatar started against Singapore? The answer is none; and he has only had his 'first' team available for a few days at most. It is far too early to be judging his performance just yet.

As I understand it he was also instrumental in getting the Yoof A League up this year instead of when the league expanded in 09-10. He apparently told Lowy to his face that it was a "f**king disgrace" [or the Dutch equivalent] that Australia's best youth were playing in the minging state leagues.
So for that I like him.
Austraaaalians with an over-blown sense of their place in the football world thought they'd get a big name but they were having a larf and this guy seems to be quite on to it. Time will tell I guess.

Could not disagree more, with half a side and everything stacked against him he played the perfect game today both on and off the field.
His comments about the A-League standard are true but he has taken the best 20 or so A-League under 23 players and is grooming them for higher levels, has offered to help the coaches, has invited the coaches to Socceroos training to watch, is at almost every A-League match.
Smokey what more do you want ..........Mate............
