Buried towards the end of the article, Tony Smith makes the point that the new Chch stadium cannot be supported by rugby alone; and suggest second A league or NRL franchise is required.

2nd A league franchise needed to support new Chch stadium

How about supporting the one we have first. There is nothing in it financially for the FFA now they have Sky with its broadcast rights. Exactly the same as the NRL and NBL.

Nothing to see here.

Great idea......start a sports franchise just to support a stadium and to make a business case for it. That sounds like a team with real longevity

NZ needs another NRL team in the near future. I don't think Welly could sustain one and they are unlikely to put two in Auckland. Bring on the Christcurch Bulls!

I do see having a second franchise as helping the 'Nix. Currently the HAL and the 'Nix are not really covered or part of general sporting discourse, the more teams from NZ in the competition should see an increase in awareness and interest in the competition and the 'Nix. There would surely be a better case for Sky to develop the HAL product they currently have rights to (for one more season at least) and for the FFA to ask for greater TV rights in the future as there would be more games (more teams) and greater demand/interest from the NZ viewing public - though not sure if Sky would be spend proportionately more as the number of teams from NZ increases.

Though the FFA has indicated that it would only consider expansion again around the time the current Aus TV deal is up for renewal. I'm sure that if a good sustainable business model is put forward then the FFA would consider it, provides more games to sell and potentially more spots for Australian professionals to employed.

Sorry Bullion but i do think The Breakers and NBL shoot down your theory. The NRL don't need another team in NZ to make the product successful in this country.

The product is sold to Sky based on subscriptions I.e you put another team in NZ, are Sky going to sell more subscriptions? Nope. The FFA have their exposure into this market for their sponsors and they sell their sponsorship packages based on another audience in NZ. Another team does not increase that subscription based audience.

I don't think you can use the NRL as an example. Before the Warriors even existed the NRL had a foothold in NZ and many people in NZ still consider Australian teams their favourite teams as they have been watching the league from before the Warriors. Plus, the NRL is the probably the best Rugby League league in the world. Unfortunately the HAL is not the EPL, La Liga etc. It may not sell many more subscriptions, the same as Sky loosing the EPL is not going to loose them that many subscriptions, but it will increase interest in the HAL, especially for NZ teams (Sky might actually start showing all games live). I don't know if the increased interest can be monetised proportionately but it should result in better exposure for football in general, the 'Nix and its sponsors and the HAL and its sponsors

Ok lets not use the NRL cause you make a fair point on that one.

The NBL is much the same though. Same size league, quality in terms of reference to a better league (NBL->NBA, HAL->EPL).

A second team in NZ will not inflate the broadcast rights or increase the market viewers in the main audience market - Australia.

If it were the case that it did work, we would have had two teams a long while ago in all 3 sports.

There are a whole long list of why a second NZ franchise will not happen for a long long time( FFA don't want to expand etc) But one day if all the stars were aligned and ChCh found a group of local Welnix type businessmen to finance Canterbury United FC then bring it on.

It would be great for NZ football. More exposure for the game, more publicity and more opportunity for kiwis  to play pro football. Imagine the Nix vs CU derbies. Of all the places in NZ a second A-League team would work in ChCh. They have a strong parochialism...could be another WSW.

But don't hold your breath over this one......

Anyone know if that French-backed bid from New Caledonia is still floating around?

Not Basildon.  Runwell/Wickford Massiv I am.  Basildon was the nearest big centre for us (Chelmsford a bit further away).

Runwell was always a cut above Basildon. And we had woods and foxes and grass snakes and all of that as well.

Edit:  You're coming across a bit Saaf Laandan.  Not at all Essex.

Not surprising - I'm a Wellington boy. Just improvising. But I did spend time south of the River: New Cross. Foxes in the garden there too. One big bugger plus wife and 2 cubs. Et oui, mon oncle habite Basildon, actuellement.
