OK, so the Solomons boys are leaving Richmond City.  Given that they all played with different clubs in the NZFC, under FIFA's two clubs per year rule, they won't be able to play for anyone until the next NZFC.  Correct?

Mascherano had to get permission to play for Liverpool after he had played for his Brazilian club and then for West Ham...so I think it's two.

See here: http://www.soccer.org.nz/index.php?page=player_status

You can be registered with three clubs between 1 July and 30 June but only play for two.

So if the Solomons boys played in the NZFC just finished and have then played for Richmond then they shoudn't be able to play for anyone else until 1 July 2007.

Of course, if they played for anyone else between 1 July 2006 and the start of the NZFC then they have already broken the rule by playing for Richmond.

It's tough and means players need to think long and hard before transferring. If you don't like it at your new club you're stuffed. What I don't understand is if you went back to your old club in the same year (1 July to 30 June) does that count as club number three or are you OK because you're back at your original club?

This interpretation could be crucial because it is what allows players to go into the NZFC and back to their club (club-NZFC-club) all within the 1 July to 30 June window. It is also what might allow Ricki to bring players into the Phoenix short-term from NZFC sides and then send them back to the NZFC, but only if those players don't play any other club football.

A potentially good thing is that finally players (and clubs) might accept that when players go into the NZFC they are not going back to their winter clubs. The Richmond example is just one where clubs are playing silly money to entice NZFC players back and for what? The NZFC should stand alone from club football as a distinct step up and once you've moved up you stay there.

Please correct me if my understanding of any of the above is wrong.

Surely that will also affect someone like Costa playing for TW, Olympic (?) and now signing for WPFC...looks like things may get messy for various players

It all resets at 1 July so once then you start again.  i.e Costa could play for both Phoenix and TW going forward.  The fact that he has played for Olympic this season won't be a factor so long as he doesn't play for them after July 1.

It is a stupid rule when you have overlapping seasons and amateur and professional clubs.  Australia have refused to enforce it and Dean Gordon definitely got away with it having played in the Northern League, for AK City and then the Knights without penalty.

Costa is a professional now and there is no way he will be playing for Olympic or Team Wellington again after July 1. He will be in training with the Phoenix and they will be carefully protecting their asset.

The only reason I can see him possibly making an appearance for TW in the future is if he's been injured or badly out of form and needs game time.

...but surely there would be deals/agreements in place?

i mean, im sure Olympic won't get all bitter about it, but surely they would have expected to have the lad for the whole season.

ah well, it probably wont come down to it. i hope so for the clubs sake

The whole team is crap pretty much so it's hard to know. I think he will struggle to drop down to this level, so may not fit in to well. There are many better clubs in ChCh - not sure why he ended up with Rangers.
Apparently he is in town lookingfor a Canterbury Utd NZFC contract.
