found this regarding 2007. Pleaces RWC at fourth, so is at least seventh once you consider events from other years (World Cup, summer and winter Olympics). It also ignores unofficial broadcast channels, e.g. the fact that millions of people in China watch the NBA and European football each week via illegal web streams. I believe figures for other developing nations would also be vastly understated, which in the case would bump up Cricket figures. Also surprised that the Indy 500 and Daytona would not be higher, considering these I think it is already a real stretch to put the RWC in the top 10.
I won't get into football vs rugby angst (no contest - rugby sucks). But these reports are not hard to find and the fact is that the NZ media either don't do their homework or plain LIE.
