In what will be the first of its kind for football on Australian TV, SBS will launch a new live weekly entertainment program, Thursday FC, in October as part of our coverage of the A-League.

Filmed in front of a live studio audience, Thursday FC will showcase the A-League like never before, combining entertainment, football, interviews and live performances.

Thursday FC will be hosted by comedian and presenter Matt Okine, who has just returned from performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was named Best Newcomer at the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Matt will be joined by SBS Football Presenters Lucy Zelic and David Zdrilic with music provided by the show’s house band, newcomer, Cartoon.

Each week Thursday FC will include a look at each of the upcoming A-League games for the round as well as special guests from music, film and sport; celebrity tipping; and live music acts.

“Thursday FC is unlike anything SBS has ever done before and a first for football in Australia,” SBS Head of Sport Ken Shipp said.

“Targeted towards A-League fans as well as a broader audience demographic, the program will capture the human and entertaining side of the game and build anticipation for the live Hyundai A-League matches on SBS 2 on Friday nights.”

Thursday FC will premiere live on Thursday 10 October at 8:30pm on SBS 2 ahead of the first A-League game of the season between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets on Friday 11 October at 7:00pm on SBS 2.

It is honestly the most God awful fucking sports show on television. On par with The Bachelor for entertainment/cringe value. Looking at Lucy Zelic is the only redeemable factor.

I'll stick this here, because I always associate Craig Foster with SBS. He's been working with them for years, including hosting sports segment in their prime nightly news 6.30-7.30pm.

Love SBS (and ABC) here in Oz, for quality world news coverage and heaps of multi cultural content. For years SBS nicknamed 'soccer bloody soccer".

Anyway I know Foster can be a polarising figure for NZ/Nix football fans, but truth is he ain't a bad guy. Just a passionate Australian football fan (so definitely Australia first), and football nut in general. Smart dude (got his law degree), his work to save Bahraini refugee Hakeem al-Araibi, from basically being 'kidnapped' from Thailand back to Bahrain was tireless.

So enjoyed this interview saw on ABC today (think is a repeat from 2020?). Hopefully viewable in NZ for anyone interested.
