It's a bit of a shame. But online media is where it's at nowadays. Perhaps ST and YF could work on an online column, and use the previous mag's sponsors to advertise on the web pages? I'd say that through this site the mag could get more views that it did previously. .  But who knows if it would be financially viable . .

Interesting isn't it - yet another local soccer magazine falls over.   We have the biggest participation sport in the country, which can't sustain a magazine about our game.   Perhaps that's the way we are heading or is this indicative of soccer players - participation only at a certain time and place and then forget all about it until next week.

That certainly seems to be the way things work in Auckland.

Ive heard someone say they could get more Fijans to the All Whites v Fiji game than Kiwis. You would think that now that Aucks are being starved of live top grade footy they would be getting to this game in huge numbers. Alas that looks like it wont be the case.

I don't want to put down Glen's efforts because they were superb, but Soccer Talk didn't actually LOOK like a magazine in the way 4-4-2 does for example.  I know there are printing costs etc involved with a "glossy" mag, but in such a competitive market, it was too easily passed over by both readers and I guess advertisers.

Shame really, because with the Phoenix rising and the All Whites about to embark upon their World Cup qualifying campaign, there's plenty of material for good copy.

I went to Waitak vs. Ba, and I saw about 3 other white people apart from the lot I was with. No joke.

Expecting it to be similar when we play Fiji

I agree it's dissapointing that it's folded but I think the suggestion of maybe joining it online with the Yellow Fever site makes sense.  Although the Phoenix is everyones number one concern you can see in the other forums that people are interested in their local leagues, the NZFC and of course the All Whites.

I reckon this board is evidence against your view that footballers and football fans don't want to keep up with the game in the media. I reckon Aussie 4-4-2 sales will have gone up since the Phoenix has landed.

But even that mag (in its hard copy format) has to compete against the immediacy of the online sources.

To be honest for any football mag to survive in NZ, it would have to have an A -League and British/European focus as well as a NZFC, All Whites  and regional focus even then the market is probably too small when it is up against YF, ESPN , 4-4-2 etc all on the web.

Nah I don't think online is the same as a magazine. A magazine is portable, you can read it anywhere and theres something about being able to hold it and flick through it.

fair enough, but magazines lack immediacy, they need to have a bit of depth (eg 4-4-2) to make the expenditure worthwhile

Brought it the first few times- good regional coverage, good womens coverage
cheap price

Worst thing about it? terrible editing- school boy spelling mistakes made it look like a rush job.

RIP- whats next? Kiwi 4-4-2!!!!

perhaps he should have spammed everyone and anyone connected with football to drum up subscriptions. For example ads on every club website (we would have happily put one on ours and we had something like 20,000 hits in one month apparently). I would bet 75% of wgtn registered footie players had no idea the mag even existed let alone how to get a copy. Its a real shame because thee was a ton of good stuff in it.

Although I'm not gutted because I didn't know the magazine existed, I do feel for the guy who put some time and effort into promoting the game, good on him for trying to promote the game.   Anyone have any thoughts on amalgamating the Phoenx Program into a weekly magazine covering footbal in general? When the season finishes maybe reverting to a monthly format?  Or maybe a Phoenix suporters mag, separate to the match program but would cover overseas items as well as it's primary focus of the Nix.

Fanzines are a big thing in the uK
many have quite funny titles, irreverent and one-eyed

A great idea for here but who has the time?

It can be sloppy and stuck together with rusty staples, as long as the hearts in it, innit

I liked soccer talk, and got it every now and again. It's sad to see it go. Respect to Glen for writing it,especially as he never once broke even. Those who read it appreciated your efforts.

I think its time that New Zealand Football puts out a magazine. A slightly more 'glossy' one than soccertalk. One that covers local, national, and international football. If it was advertised on yellowfever it could probably take off I think.

I'm gutted, it was a great read, better then the English fanzine pap like shoot et al.  I brought every magazine since the second edition and when I moved overseas I got my dad to subscribe and through my dad my uncle got into it aswell.  I really like the posters, regional and womens footie aspects of the mag and so do the Brits who I liva and work with.

When I told them that it had gone out of print they were gutted.  Reading stuff online is all well and good but its always better to have a hard copy to read, especially here in London where I spend many hours traveling (and British papers and magazines are CRAP!).

ps Whilst I hate AKL A I was proud of their efforts in Japan and had the poster of the team laminated and have it proudly on display on my office wall.

The soccertalk website does say that all paid subscribers will be refunded. Not me though I only had one of those free 12 months subsriptions but was still gutted!
